The sharp beeping of my alarm had my eyes blinking open.
Morning run. It's time to move forward.
I got out of bed, stretched once, and walked out of my room. Jonas, with his arms crossed and an unsuspecting smirk on his face, had already opened my door.
He jogged in place, starting to tease, “I was beginning to think you’d sleep through it.”
I ignored him and ran off, passing him without a word. He chuckled and quickly followed. We ran out of the Pack house and into the woods, our feet pounding against the dirt.
"So, eighteen now. "How does it feel?" Keeping pace beside me, Jonas asked, his eyes flickering in my direction.
I swallowed my words, closing my mouth as I asked, "How do you expect me to feel?" I dodged a low-hanging branch and shot back.
"I don’t know. Perhaps there is a stronger sense of connection. Stronger. Happier. He shrugged and said, 'More fulfilled.'
The cold morning air burnt my lungs as I let out a deep breath. "That’s nonsense."
Jonas sighed dramatically. "As I was saying, I was pondering something." It's going to change a lot," you told him when you announced that you'd found your mate.
"Like what?" I asked, sidestepping a rock.
"Like Eliza," Jonas grinned. "You two are always together." If the Moon Goddess pairs me with anybody else, I would even swear to protest. You're too perfect together. If she ends up with another mate… I’d be pissed."
I scoffed and sped up so he couldn’t keep up.
I hadn't even considered it. The Moon Goddess has the ultimate knowledge. The last thing I wanted was a stubborn, disobedient mate. The very thought shook my head.
When our run was over, I was back at the Pack House, slipping into my usual routine. There was no school today, not that it mattered. I barely went. I would do it twice, maybe three times a month if I felt like it. At my age, being Alpha meant priorities had changed. I had a pack to lead and responsibilities to fulfill.
Listening to useless lectures in a classroom full of humans and werewolves was a waste of time. I have a company to run already. I wasn’t in school for money or a future career I hoped to have.
Today, however, was different. My birthday.
The elders in my pack were particularly excited. They wanted me to find my Luna, have heirs, and secure the future.
I handled some morning business and then returned to my room and took a long, hot shower. I stepped out, and there was a neatly folded outfit on my bed.
Jonas. Of course.
He always picked my clothes for these events, saying I had no sense of style. I rolled my eyes and put the outfit on.
As I stepped out of my room, Jonas was there again, grinning like he had a secret.
He was now in step beside me. "So, like I said beforehand, your birthday party is in two parts," he began. The elders are here now. There will be gifts, food, the usual."
I sighed. "And the younger ones?"
"He wiggled his brows. "Halbmond Club tonight," Jonas said. "A wild time, teenagers, music, drinking..."
I stared at him. "Aren’t I the one who should?”
He smirked. "You never do."
The truth was, the elders had already gathered outside, collecting gifts from the servants. As I walked past, they bowed, showing me respect.
I nodded back and went back to my office. As soon as I stepped inside, an image hit my mind.
Eliza. Bent over my desk. Hands gripping the surface. My hands were placed on her hips.
I closed my jaw and squeezed my eyes tight, but the vision wouldn’t disappear. It felt too real. The heat in my veins was unbearable; my body reacted instantly.
Jonas’s voice then shot through the mind link.
"I hope Lukas is not isolating himself in his office today." It’s your damn birthday!"
I clenched my teeth, gazing inward.
Damn it.
"Lukas? "Are you swearing at me?" Jonas’s voice came again.
I broke the link and groaned. This was insane. Why did I still even think about her? She was nothing more than an intractable annoyance, yet she continued to manipulate my thoughts.
Hours later, it was time to leave for the club.
As expected, Jonas had picked another outfit for me. I put it on, adjusted my cuffs, and looked at myself in the mirror.
Not bad.
I stepped outside, and Jonas was already there, tapping his foot impatiently.
"You look good. Hot, actually. The skin of his arms prickled as he teased, "Hot for your Luna."
I rolled my eyes. "Shut up."
Outside was a sleek black Bentley. Jonas got in on the other side, and I slid into the backseat.
The driver gave a quick nod. Jonas said to him, "You know where to go." The man nodded and pulled away from the Pack House.
We were in front of Halbmond Club minutes later.
The music was already vibrating on the ground, and the place was packed. As I stepped out, Jonas turned to me.
"Lukas, look at me."
I sighed. "What?"
His eyes gleamed. You had quite a feeling; I suspect we will find your mate tonight. "This is about to change your life forever."
I walked inside and ignored him.
At the entrance stood two werewolf bouncers. I ordered no humans tonight. It was a pack event; no outsiders.
They both bowed as I passed.
The energy of the club was alive. Bodies pressed together, people danced, and laughter and conversation echoed to the pounding bass. However, the second I stepped inside, it changed.
The aroma swept over me.
In the sweat, the perfume, and the alcohol, one scent stood out. Sweet. Addictive. Calling me.
I knew I wasn’t the only one who was aware of what was happening. Eagerly, female werewolves eyed me, hoping I’d choose them. A few of them came closer, urgently requiring my attention.
I ignored them all and followed the scent.
Then I saw her.
She was a girl in a tight purple and black cocktail dress that moved as if she really owned the dance floor. Her hips rolled, her body swayed, and her confidence was undeniable.
My stomach dropped.
No.
No. No. No.
It was a cruel joke from the Moon Goddess. Of all the people in the world, why her?
Eliza.
She was nothing like a Luna. She was reckless, stubborn, and impossible. She was the person I never desired to have as my partner.
Jonas’s voice cut through my thoughts. "Is it her?" He was just behind me, observing me closely. "Lukas, is she the one?"
I swallowed hard. "Jonas, pinch me. I just need to know if this is real."
He pinched my shoulder and smirked.
I winced. "Damn it."
Jonas laughed. "So it’s her? I knew it! "Thank you, Moon Goddess!" He all but cheered.
I stared right into her. After a while, she stopped dancing as if she could sense I was staring at her and turned.
Our eyes met.
She grinned. "Oh, hey, Alpha! You finally made it! The celebration is just beginning. "I’m having the best time of my life!" she replies. She winked.
Spinning on my heel, I stormed out of the club.
No way.
This couldn’t happen.
However, I knew deep down that it was too late.
Eliza was my Luna.
And there was no escaping it.
