Prologue
*SNAP*
I whipped my head to the left, as I heard a twig crack under the pressure of something. Looking out into the darkness, I couldn't see anything, just the outline of pine trees as tall as skyscrapers. I squinted my eyes as I surveyed the area around me, slowly bringing me back to the path that I was on. Moving further down the trail that I was walking, headed to the packhouse, I walked cautiously trying to listen for anything through the darkness that may try to catch me off guard. I made it about a hundred yards from the packhouse, hearing the music that was blaring for the party the Alpha was throwing for his son, and our soon to be Alpha, David's 18th birthday, in hopes of his son finding his mate. I had just reached the treeline when I heard another snap, and a growl that came along with it. My eyes widened in fear as the smell that hit me was the most goddess awful smell, that of sewage, "ROGUES," I managed to whisper to myself, almost tripping over the dirt to run as fast as I could. I mind linked the Alpha with my thoughts as loud as possible, hoping he would hear me, when about 10 yards away from the house, everything went dark.
I jolted up in bed, covered in sweat, looking around like a crazy person, when my mom started beating on my door, " Katie, get out of bed, your gonna be late for school!"
"Ugh," I sighed, throwing myself back down onto my pillow.
I really don't want to do this today, I thought to myself. I have been having this dream for almost a month straight, and every time, things become more and more vivid. I decided that school could wait, I needed to talk to Alpha Michael, I needed to tell him about my dream, from the very first one, up until the one I had last night. There had to be a reason I was having these dreams right? I figured the worst he could do was tell me not to come to the party thinking that I would be the target, but I had a feeling it was so much more than that.
I got up from my bed, and did my morning routine, brushed my teeth and pulled my dark brown hair into a ponytail. My hair looked so plain when I didn't fix it up with curls. I didn't have the beautiful platinum hair like our Gamma's daughter did, she could wear her hair over her face, and she would look like a model. I walked out of my bedroom and into the kitchen of our condo in the packhouse, and saw my mom standing there finishing up breakfast.
"Morning mom," I said as she turned around with our plates in her hand. I looked at her funny, " Where's Dad?"
She just smiled, " Dad had to leave early this morning to attend to Beta duties, so it's just you and me this morning kiddo."
I just smiled, sat down at our table, and tried to start eating breakfast. After about five minutes, mom broke the silence, " Katie, sweetheart, what's wrong? You haven't hardly touched your food, and you seem to be somewhere else."
I just sighed and looked up at her. "I don't know for sure yet. Is there any way that I could possibly miss school today, there is something that I need to speak with Alpha Michael about."
My mom's brows furrowed, as she tilted her head to look at me, trying to gauge if I was serious. " It has to do with what is wrong with me this morning, I don't know if it is for sure something that I need to worry about or not and I don't want to cause a panic if it's not." She gently nodded her head and said, " I guess, but you know your father isn't going to be happy that you are missing out on your studies, you have less than a month until graduation, and he needs you to be ready to find your mate so you and he can take over."
I smiled, and just shook my head, "Mom, how likely is it that I will actually find my mate at 18? You and Dad didn't find each other until your mid-twenties. Besides, I still have a week before I turn 18.... And honestly I don't know if I want to take over so early anyway."
"Don't let your father hear you say that," she chuckled. "If you feel that you need to speak with the Alpha, I suggest you hurry, he has a meeting in about an hour that he has to go into the city for."
I nodded my head, and placed my dishes in the sink. I looked at mom, gave her a small smile and waved. As I was walking down the hall I could hear shouting coming from the Alpha's office, "what in the world is going on?"
The door to his office swung open, and our Cheif Warrior was storming out of the office. I looked at him with my eyebrows furrowed, trying to figure out if it was he and the Alpha that were fighting. He looked at me with nothing but pure rage radiating off of him, I lowered my head out of respect, and moved to the side so he could pass. He kept on walking straight down the hallway, down the stairs, and right out of the front of the packhouse.
What was that all about?
"Kathryn, what on earth are you still doing here, you're already supposed to be gone to school?" My dad all but growled at me. I looked down at the floor and bit my lip for a second.
"Kathryn, I asked you a question!"
"Dad, I... " I paused for a second. "I need to talk to Alpha Michael."
"Why do you need to talk to the Alpha, right now isn't really a good time."
"I just need to talk to him, I have a really bad feeling, and I need to speak with him."
"Fine, but you need to make it quick, he had already had one major setback today, and I highly doubt that he wants another."
I gulped, I don't really know if my dreams mean anything or not, but if someone was having a dream about my pack being attacked during my son's party, when we were all distracted, I would want to know about it.
I slowly walked up to the Alpha's office, and knocked on the door.
"Come in Katie," sounded from the other side. "Your Dad linked me and told me you were coming," he said with a smile. "What is it I can do for you this morning?"
I sighed taking a deep breath, "Alpha, if someone had been having dreams of something terrible happening to the pack, would you want to know about those dreams?"
He stopped, looked at me, and his eyes went deep. "Well, that would depend on how often these dreams were occuring."
"And if it has been for a month straight, and getting more and more vivid by the night?"
"Then yes, I would definitely want to know."
I sat down in the chair in front of his desk, and looked up at him, age has not necessarily been his friend. There has been so much that has happened with the pack, and he has been so stressed, his dark hair was almost completely grey. His once sparkling green eyes, were almost translucent.
I smiled softly at him, "Alpha Michael, I honestly don't know if there is anything to be worried about, but I have been having dreams over the last month, that on the night of David's birthday party, there will be at least one rogue on the premesis. I don't know if there will be more, because well, my dreams haven't allowed me to get that far yet, but I know one thing is for sure, I won't make it to the party."
