Chapter 3- The Elders Council

Katie’s POV                                            David stood there frozen, looking at his dad, as he processed all the information that he just heard. I couldn’t help but feel awful for him. Someone took his mother from him. David broke the silence, “Mom is dead? When? How? What happened?” The Alpha lowered his head, “It was sometime in the night. I had been in my office working when I felt an insurmountable amount of pain and fear come through our bond. As far as the how, she was stabbed in the heart, we don’t know by who, or why yet, all we know is it was someone from the pack.” David’s face paled with the information that someone from our pack had killed their Luna. He fell to his knees, not able to hold himself up anymore. David looked from the floor to his father. “Do you have any suspicions whatsoever of who may have been behind it?” The Alpha looked at him, with tears filling his eyes, “I have my suspicions, son, but suspicions alone are not enough for me to do anything. The Elders Council will be here within the hour with their investigators, and they will not be leaving until we have an answer.” David nodded, “When they find them,” he paused, “they are MINE!!” he roared shaking the pack house from its foundation. David and the Luna were super close. Most children are close with their mothers, but they had something different. Something more than just a mother-son relationship. I knew David would take this personal, and he had every right to. I too am looking forward to finding out who did this.   David’s POV   After meeting with Katie and my dad in his office, I was livid, bloodthirsty. Someone from my pack killed my mother. The thing that angered me more than anything was that I didn’t have a clue as to why. It was time to start eliminating suspects. I knew Katie would not, in a million years, even hurt a fly. Quite literally a fly, all she does is shoo them away. I know it wouldn’t be her parents either, they were gone. They had left during dinner yesterday to go to Aunt Margie’s family. They had told me not to say anything to Katie. They wanted to be the one’s to talk to her. And to top it off, my mom and her were best friends. The Beta was another dead end, he would kill himself before hurting my mom. He has put his own life in danger to keep her safe on more than one occasion. And well, Dad, he would never do anything to hurt her, especially if it would intentionally put himself in the state he is in now. As I was running over the list of people in my head, I see Katie staring at the Gamma’s door. What is that about? “Hey Katie, what’s on your mind?” “Huh, oh sorry David, I was just zoning out,” she said with a small smile. I c****d my head, “at the Gamma’s door? Is there something you know, or feel for that matter?” She shrugged and looked back at the door. I loved this girl to death; she and I had always promised each other we would wait until we turned 18 to find out if we were mates. I have always been drawn to her. I grabbed her hand and walked out to the lake shore. This was always our favorite place to be and spend time together. “Katie,” I got her attention. She looked up at me with her gorgeous eyes, fuchsia, what a color. “Penny for your thoughts love.” She just shook her head. “I don’t even know what to think.” She paused. “I saw two women out here yesterday and it looked like they were fighting, but because of the angle of the sun on the lake I couldn’t see who it was. Then at dinner, your mom and Shelly came in from the back yard and Shelly seemed angry. And on the way up to my room to get ready for bed, I heard her yelling at the Gamma from their room. All I heard of the conversation though was ‘it’s all her fault,’ what or who she meant I don’t know.” My frown deepened, “when did you say this was?” “Before you came into the dining room for dinner, and then when I was headed up for bed.” I didn’t want to believe that my dad’s Gamma and his mate had anything to do with my mom’s death, but it would at least give the Elders somewhere to start. When I came back from my wandering thoughts, I noticed Katie was still looking like something was bothering her. “Katie?” “Hmm…” “What’s wrong? You look like something else is bothering you.” She looked at me, her eyes foggy with unshed tears. “You would probably just laugh at me,” she said. I quirked my eyebrow at her. “Since when have I ever been one to think anything serious you have to say is funny?” She sighed, “Never, it’s just weird. I kind of want to talk to Mom about it first.” “Katie, we’ve never had secrets. We have been the closest of friends forever, talk to me baby girl.” “Not here. Can we maybe go on a drive, I don’t want to take a chance of anyone eaves dropping? The last thing I need is for it to get around that I am a freak.” I just laughed at her, “that’s fine Katie, let’s go.”   Katie’s POV We walked from the lakeshore to the garage and climbed into David’s Jeep. As we pulled off down the driveway, we saw Heather flirting with one of the guards. Typical. When she saw us coming, she walked away from the guard and started to walk toward the direction we were going. David, not wanting to deal with her, sped up. The gates opened and then closed behind us. David chuckled, “Stupid b***h, what the f**k makes her think that I would ever want anything to do with her?” “She’s power-hungry David, you know that better than anyone.” As we were driving, I told David about my dream, every detail that I could remember, and he surprised me. He didn’t laugh at me at all. He listened, very intently, and after I finished telling him everything we sat in silence. After about ten minutes he looked at me with love in his eyes. “Why did you think I would laugh at you?” Really, this is the first question he is going to ask me? “Because I’m a freak! I had a dream thinking I had it just because I saw them upset, and then get up this morning to find out it actually happened.” “If anything, Katie, look at this as a gift. You can possibly help change the outcome of things that you see.” I thought about what he had said for a few minutes, not really knowing how I feel about this ‘gift’ as he calls it. “I guess, but David,” “Yeah,” “Can we please keep this between us, just until I can find some answers? Please?” He thought about it for a minute. “Yeah, but Katie, you need to talk to my dad as soon as you get the chance. I know he will keep an open mind, and if you include the fact of what you witnessed, I am sure he will keep your secret.” I just nodded my head at David as he cranked his Jeep up for us to head back to the pack house. As we pulled up to the house, we saw the Alpha outside talking to a group of older men. David and I walked up, and Alpha Michael turned to us and introduced us to the group. “David, Katie,” we bowed our heads to the Alpha, “this is the Elders Council.” Our eyes went wide. “Elder Sebastian Graham, head elder of the council. It’s nice to meet you both.” An older man with salt and pepper hair and teal eyes said to us. “It’s an honor to meet you Elder Graham,” David said. “This is my best friend and Beta’s daughter Kathryn, and I am David, future Alpha of the Stone Lake Pack.” Elder Graham nodded his head and shook our hands. “So, are you two mates?” I blushed, and David let out a chuckle as he placed his arm around me, “We don’t know yet, but we are hopeful.” David stated and I turned ten shades of red. Elder Graham and the other Elders laughed seeing my embarrassed state. “Well, here’s to hope,” another elder said. “David, Katie, do you know why we are here?” Elder Graham asked. “Yes sir,” I brought out just above a whisper. “You are here to find our Luna’s killer.” Elder Graham looked at me. His next question sucked all of the oxygen out of my lungs and left me gasping for air that I could not find. “Miss Katie, who killed the Luna?”
