The distance between us

1173 Words

The morning sun has barely peeked over the horizon when I return to where our makeshift shelter is, coming from the jungle. The cool breeze brushes against my skin, carrying the scent of salt and damp earth. My arms are instinctively wrapped around myself, not from the cold, but from the lingering weight of last night. I can still feel him. The warmth of Jasper’s body, the way his lips moved against mine, the way he had shifted, pressing me gently into the earth as if I was the only thing in the world that mattered to him. And then, like a sudden jolt of electricity, her face had flashed into my mind. The girl. The one Jasper used to do hair for. The one whose name he hadn't even mentioned. I had pushed him away so fast, I can't even recall how I managed to get to my feet.
