Loss, great loss fills our hearts. The king and queen have fallen in the battle. Princess Katreina ascends to the throne in three days' time. Will she be able to stop the demon army, Is she old enough to lead, and more, page six. I read the article title again, wondering how they can sum up my life in a few short pages. This was presented to me as I prepared to take a place I was no were near ready for. My dad was the king, he died, they killed him taking my mother with him. They were a bonded pair, and could not live without the other. Now I must take the throne not even a week after I sent them to the nethers. No time to mourn their deaths. The Demons continued to attack the kingdom from all sides. With them gone they think we are weak. I refuse to allow their deaths to be in vain. As I sit at the elders table discussing the need to go offensive in this attack and take the fight to them, once again fighting with them to make them understand, even though I am young compared to them I was raised to lead our people. I can do this and keep our people safe. They don't want me in the field after what happened to my parents. What they don't seem to understand is I won't back down. We are going to fight them, we have to push them out of our lands. They say wait until the coronation, but that will be too late at the rate we are losing. We are doing this today, tonight. We have to. "Kyle… Kyle get up" I hissed in his ear startling my friend and guard awake. His dark brown hair sticking up on end as he opened his green eyes, blinking a few times to bring himself to awearness. He was shirtless as always, I have been waking him up since we were kids and he always slept in a pair of shorts. His body temperature is always higher than ours due to his demon heritage. Kyle defected with his parents when he was a child, bringing their demon strength and knowledge that helped us last this long in the war. "Get up we are going on the offensive and I need my best friend to protect me in this mission." I smile, turning to walk back into my room. Through the secret door that attached them. He needed to be able to protect me should they attack the castle, we are not a compatible match so my parents never worried about anything happening between us. He was like a brother to me, though I suspect over the years he had developed a deeper interest. "What do you mean?" he asked as he climbed out of his bed and threw on a shirt. " I mean, we are going to steal the dragon king's throne and win this war. I am tired of fighting." He followed me through the door to find Allison, my friend already waiting. She brought with her, her brothers Luke, Nick, and Rob. “Just the six of us are you nuts? There is no way we are going to make it there.” he said with a sigh “That's not true. As a mission of this sort has never been tried. I think that with fewer people we have a greater chance of evening the playing field. We can sneak in and out without them ever knowing we were there, as long as we are quick and quiet.” “No, there will be too many guards and risk this, you are going to be the queen! You can't risk your life carelessly.” “I am going whether you come or not. So let's make one thing clear, no one is going to stop me from giving our people a chance to win this fight.” I finished placing a blade in my boot and stood back up. We all had knives or swords, making for a quiet kill should the need arise. “So are you coming?” “You know I am.” He grabbed his bow and a knife of his own before we all krept silently out of the castle and through the hidden passage allowing us to sneak by all the other guards and people, and out of the castle keep undetected. Based on the information we received on the king he was currently at his military camp a few hours away from our home. The war brings him closer every day. We rode by horse as far as we could then left Allison with them to watch over, as we made the rest of the track by foot. Just outside the camp we took our time to make sure our intel was correct. We didn't have to wait long before we spotted the king's tent almost directly in the center of the camp. Only a few demon warriors were still visible throughout the camp. Most were near what looked to be a mess tent on the right of the camp. This late at night many of them would be sleeping or just relaxing. They had been hitting us non stop, only one camp from here. Using this one to replenish themselves and switching warriors, giving our troops little reprieve even at night. I signaled Kyle to come with me and the boys to watch our back as we slowly entered the camp. We had to backtrack to avoid getting caught twice before we made it to the demon king's tent. We then made sure no one was moving about inside before cutting a whole in the fabric and making our way inside the spacious tent. We found ourselves among his clothes and took the time to look around the tent. His sleeping form could be seen on the far side of the tent, a long table separated us from him covered in maps and other documents. Papers scattered the floor. I let Kyle know it was clear and we moved, going under the table and closer to our sleeping victim. Before I could move farther Kyle grabbed my arm with a shake of his head, I understood he would not let me be the one to kill him. I nodded in understanding. Maintaining my position under the table and pulling the dagger from my boot just in case, as Kyle slipped out and over to the king. I held my breath not wanting to make a sound as he brought his knife across the king's throat, the King began to sputter and choke, holding his neck with one hand as blood began to run down his arm while reaching for his own weapon with the other. Kyle plunged his blade into the king's heart, silencing the death throes of the demon. The king's body sank slowly down into the bed as his life faded from his eyes. It was done, we killed the demon king, helping our chances in the war. Wasting no time we backtracked our way through the camp before an alarm could be raised. We made it to the horses before we heard the first shout go up, hopefully giving us enough of a head start to make it back within our territory before we were spotted.
