I looked out the window, just letting the view sooth me. The anxiety I have been feeling from the moment I stepped onto this bus, was just now relaxing its hold on me. Even after three years of running and looking over my shoulder, my literal demons haven't left me alone. Just a couple of weeks ago, my brothers had almost caught me. By some miracle, I got away from them. I took slow steading breaths, as the movement of the bus reassured me that I was safe. Three years...it's been three years since I ran away from home, away from a fate..I considered it worse than death. As a daughter of a slayer, and as a female with no real worth among MY slayer family. I was being forced into an arranged marriage, with another slayer family, in show of a union between the two. The awful part of this was that I was being married off to my rapist, the man that had scared me for the rest of my life, and the bastard gloated in my face saying I was going to be his anyway. That had happened just before I had turned eighteen, and...before my mother's death. The same day they buried her was the same day I had run away. I had overheard my father talking with him, he had wanted to move up the date of our marriage. I would rather die than be tied to a monster like him. I took my bag with things I would need, all my money I had earned and snuck out. And here we were three years later. Jumping from place to place, not staying too long in one place, meeting good and bad people on the way, the one thing I had come to realize was that. The very thing my family killed and hated was hiding right in their faces. Demons, vampires, werewolves, and witches mostly live out in the open. I worked for a demon, a sweet guy. I met his family, who also carried demon blood. None of which caused any trouble. I did, however, realize they ate cow, goat, and some chicken hearts, replacing the human ones they would normally eat. I once watched a small pack of wolves save a couple from a gang. I never said anything to show I knew what either one was. I have kept mostly to myself, unless I really have needed to bring out my weapons to do something. All the things I had been taught were now very gray, my instincts to kill had been, for the most part, numbed. I still kept myself in shape and on alert at all times, if a couple weeks ago were any indication my family was still looking for me. So Lillian's invitation came at a great time. As I sat there still trying to calm my jumpiness, I fell into an uneasy sleep. My dreams are filled with the same nightmare as before. Either I'm cornered with nowhere to run, and he catches me or I'm running away from someone, and wake up when he grabs my shoulder. This time, I couldn't run. His laughter rang around me, but when I felt someone's hand on my shoulder, I didn't resist or pull away. His voice sent a warmth through my body, for once in a long time, I felt safe. The jolt from the bus woke me up. I looked around at the half empty bus, but found nobody close to me. The doors opened and everyone started to file out. It was getting dark already outside, but I could still see how green everything looked. If I was a wolf, I would love this place to run free and among the green, thick wild life. As I got down, my skin felt a light electric buzz in the air. I've noticed that when there were witches in the area. I looked around looking for my aunt but also letting my power work. I could see through glamour something demons used to blend in with everyone else, and yes, there were some demons greeting family here. No, witches though. I was so focused on everyone else, I didn't hear the person behind me. "ID please!" they said, making me jump, and quickly turning to look at them. "Jeez, way to scare a girl!" "Who are you waiting for, and can we see an ID?" "Who I'm waiting for in none of your business, and no you may not see my ID!" "Ma'am it the law here, so..." "I said no, I'm just standing here!" "You are under arrest!" said one of the men. "Who the hell do you think you are?" "Officers of the law, now stop resisting!" "Oh, I'll show you resisting!" I hit one in the stomach and the other in the face, grabbed my bag and ran into the forest. They called for back up over their radios. Letting my ego believe I was home free, I suddenly slammed into something..or someone. Looking up, all I could see was two blue eyes, shining in the darkness. "s**t!" I said out loud and got to my feet, only to be knocked down again. I turned around to face the monster holding me down. "Where you in a hurry too?" his voice washed over me, like warm water, comforting and soothing. "Vampire." I said in a small voice. He smiled as if me saying what he was out loud, was funny. Soon the two officers came through the bushes. "Nice catch boss!" "Boss?" I said. That also had the guy chuckling. As he got me on my feet, he handcuffed me. "I don't think she's the killer, but you know what to do." "Copy that boss!" They soon led me to the car, and we headed into town. Okay, "town" was a bit short of description. It was small enough to be a town, but almost big enough to be a city. The lights were impressive and beautiful. There were still a lot of people out and about, but as I looked closer, I could see through the glamour. "Demons," I said softly. "Welcome to Hollow, a safe haven for all supernaturals." I sat back, and groaned. Soon we were at the station, and they pulled me out of the car, and took me inside. Looking around at the other officers, there were demons, and from the ones that looked normal, my bet was they were vampires or wolves. I looked up at who I thought was the captain, and he looked normal. Vampire, with his big air of authority but mostly because of his eyes. They were a gold color. He stared at me but I didn't look away, as they put me in an interrogation room. One took the cuffs off, and they closed the door behind them as they left. Looking around, I noticed the mirror and just sat down. They had said something about a killer. I wasn't going to give them more of a chance to pin things on me. I waited maybe fifteen minutes, when the officer from the forest walked in, closed the door behind him, and sat on the edge of the table. Now that he was in the light and I got to see him for real. Like every super natural being, that man was gorgeous. He had dark blond hair, it was cut short on the sides, and piled neatly on top, his dark blue eyes, a little Chris Hemsworth vibe, but without so much facial hair. "So are you going to tell me who you are and why you ran?" his voice, for some reason so soothing to listen to. I just shrugged and looked past him, he smiled and that made me sit up a little, he was showing fangs. He noticed I noticed. "I'm not going to hurt you," he said softly, sending a shiver up my back, which I ignored, " who are you here to see?" "Why do you care, I did come to see someone, that is all you should know!" I finally said, getting to my feet and away from him. He was throwing me off. I couldn't tell if it was his actual vampire charm or...what! "She speaks, why can't you tell me who you're here to see?" He asked a little playfully. "My mom told me never to talk to strangers." I said bitterly, but for the most part sarcastically. Again he chuckled and got to his feet, facing his whole body toward me. Then he stopped, looked to the side as if to listen, then back at me, with the biggest grin. Then opened the door. "What the hell do you think you are doing?!" "Lillian?" "What gives you the right to drag her all the way here?" "She wasn't dragged, Lillian..." "It's night time, and she should be in my house, not here!" The officer looked at Lillian with a serious look. "You've seen the papers, Lillian, there's a killer on the prowl that needs to be stopped..." "Then catch them, but leave my family alone!" He looked frustrated, not angry. Glanced up at me once, and walked out of the room. Lillian then turned to me, with a big sigh and smile. "Hey, honey, I'm so sorry, I wasn't there to meet you. I had an emergency at the bakery." "It's fine, but what's going on..what killer?" Lillian gave me a look, I gave her a look back, she rolled her eyes at me. "Look, don't get into trouble, leave those kinds of things to the police, okay." she said as she led me out of the room. The officer looked up at us, he just gave me a little side smile. "Fine, not really what I'm here for anyway." "Good girl." said Lillian as we headed out to a desk, where she signed for me to go. "See ya around." the officer said as Lillian signed. I looked at him. "I doubt that, but small hell I guess." I replied, he chuckled again, and we walked out of the station. "He seemed to be friendly with you?" "Yeah, he thought it was funny, that I knew he was a vampire." Lillian flinched and looked over at me. She hadn't mentioned the fact she lived in a town filled with monsters. "I meant to tell you, Alex, it's just..." "You knew I wouldn't have come if I'd known about them!" "Yes, honey, all these people want is to be left alone, as do you, don't you?" "Lillian, I'm a slayer, not an active one, but...I can't stay here!" Lillian looked hurt by my words. She had been excited to have me here, but now that I knew about all these...people hiding out here, if something went wrong they'd blame me. "Nobody knows about you, being a slayer honey..." "Lillian, these are demons, vampires and wolves, you really think it's going to take them that long to figure things out..." "Nobody knows Mateo was a slayer, Alex. When we moved here, we lived peacefully with everyone." I sighed deeply, looking out, and painfully wished I could just throw caution to the wind and stay. "You know, Dad and the others are still looking for me, Lillian. If they find me here they'll know..." " There's no way this place is protected by magic..." I pulled my sleeve up, my family crest had been burning for a while, the crest was burned into our arms when we turned twelve, just after our first kill. My family had done it to keep me in line, Mom had had one too. "Will the magic be strong enough to jam this signal so they don't fine me?" Lillian gave me a sympathetic look, turned the Tahoe on and pulled out of the parking lot, we headed to just a bit out of town. It was hidden among the trees and bushes. The night made it all the more mysterious to drive down the gravel road. Once at the house, I looked up at it. It was an impressive house. "Welcome home, Alex."
