The offer

Chapter 10:
"Emily, it's Sarah," said the voice on the phone. "I've been thinking a lot about our conversation, and I have an offer to make."
Emily's mind raced as she wondered what Sarah, the mysterious woman from Alex's past, wanted.
"What kind of offer?" Emily asked cautiously.
"I want to help you and Alex be together," Sarah said. "I know it sounds crazy, but hear me out. I've been carrying around guilt for years, and I think this is my chance to make things right."
Emily's curiosity was piqued. "What do you propose?"
"I'll talk to the board of directors, make them see that your relationship with Alex isn't a liability, but an asset. I'll vouch for you both, and I think I can make them listen."
Emily was stunned. Why would Sarah, who had seemed so opposed to their relationship, suddenly change her mind?
"What's in it for you?" Emily asked warily.
Sarah's voice was laced with emotion. "I want to make amends, Emily. I want to help Alex find happiness, and if that's with you, then so be it."
Emily didn't know what to say. Part of her wanted to jump at the chance, but another part was scared of getting hurt again.
