Chapter 8 : No way out.
The next day in the morning, Asher received the visit of Vixel, his childhood friend.
As the son of a beta of Aric the lycan king, Vixel had had the privilege of growing up with Asher and receiving the same education as him.
Asher was sitting on his bed and lost in thought when Vixel entered the room after knocking on the door without Asher reacting.
"Hey! Hi bro." Vixel threw at Asher, slapping him on the cheek. "How are you doing?"
"I'm not dead yet. Glad to see you again." Asher replied in a weak voice, as he came out of his thoughts.
Vixel bowed and they gave each other a warm hug, then the mood changed and became more electric.
"The last time I came to see you, you were still unconscious. So I preferred to come back later." Vixel said.
"When you look serious, you have something important to tell me." Asher Saïd.
"No, this time I want to know something. Bro, I want to understand how you could have had a romantic relationship with...a werewolf?" Vixel asked, eyes widening.
"What do you want me to tell you? I didn't force anything. The first time I saw her, she struck me as a revelation. Deep inside me, I felt that it was with her that I would like to make my life." Explained Asher visibly shivering.
Vixel glanced outside to see if anyone was watching them. "Asher you are crazy. How can you say such a thing so loudly? Luckily there was no one outside." Vixel reproached vigorously.
"To be honest, I don't care at this point. I've gone way too far already. I've even fought lycans from my own pack to protect her." Asher lamented.
"I will do everything in my power so that nothing happens to her if for that I have to lose my skin." he continued.
"Asher you're seriously starting to worry me. Truth be told, you can still save the day. A few days ago, I quietly attended a meeting called by your father and heard Ginger come to your defense when the betas vilified you. In my opinion, she really cares about you.
"I don't doubt her feelings for me. But today my heart belongs to Skylar." Asher snapped.
"Without wanting to break your heart, it was decided during this meeting that once you are back on your feet, you will have to execute Skylar yourself to prove your loyalty."
"What, what are you telling me?" Asher gasped.
"That's not all. I also captured a discussion last night between Grendel and your father. In view of the complaints of the crowd, they decided that the execution would be done in two days."
With a bound, Asher was standing in front of Vixel. He tied him, almost strangling him. "Where are they planning to carry out the execution?" he asked furiously.
"Calm down bro." urged Vixel in a choked voice. "It will be at the Egnomia Arena."
Asher loosened his grip upon hearing this and went back to sit dumbfounded. His sudden effort had reopened some of his wounds which began to bleed. But in shock, he felt no pain.
Vixel finished coughing to catch his breath. "Asher, that werewolf really drove you crazy. For thé saké offre Moon Godess, control yourself!"
"I beg your pardon Vixel. I lost control."
"To tell you the truth, Grendel wants this execution to be exemplary and spectacular. Right now, he's arguing with the crowds. All the lycans want to attend and see the blood flow that will wash away our honor. Whether you like it or not, you are the crown prince and you will have to take your responsibility."
With these words Vixel left the infirmary, leaving Asher dejected.
High up through one of the dungeon's stone walls, a small opening that served as a window let the rays of the morning sun trudge painfully through and plunged directly into the pâle face of Skylar asleep.
blinded by the light when she woke up, she squinted and left this corner of the cell to find herself in the shadows.
She had accommodated herself to her heavy iron colla r which had nonetheless left marks on her neck.
With her tongue, Skylar palpated her gum where her tooth had popped out from the king's hard blow and felt it had grown back.
Crouched on her knees, and seriously embittered and weakened by the many days of captivity, she couldn't help but think of Asher.
"Asher...did you finally recover from your injuries. Did you finally abandon me or are you being blocked from coming to see me? I need you. I miss you. Please give me a sign. Tell me something." she lamented, her forehead on her knees.
Despite her dejected state, she picked up a stone from the ground and began to carve on the wall:
"Asher and Skylar forever."
All surrounded by a huge heart.
As she reinforced the strokes of the letters and pampered her artwork, she heard a voice coming from the other side of the wall. the rubbing of the stone against the wall had probably caught someone's attention, she thought.
She stopped short to listen, but nothing. "Is there someone?" she hissed.
"Yes. And who are you? You were also kidn*pped, weren't you?" Responded a male voice clearer and more distinct, but muffled by the thickness of the wall.
"Yes... Well no, not really."
"What are you doing locked up here then? Aren't you a werewolf?" Asked the puzzled voice.
"Yes I am. But it's a bit... If you too are a werewolf, then what pack do you belong to?" She asked intrigued.
"The Blackmoon Pack. How about you?"
Those words startled Skylar, who immediatly clung to the wall. "I'm from the same pack as you. My name is Skylar. I'm thé daughter of beta John Sarlight. And you, what's your name, and... How did you end up here?"
"My name is Mathis. My parents are omegas. I don't know how long I've been here, but I've been here for a long time."
"for a long time you say?"
"Yes. Before my a*******n I did not know of the existence of the lycans. I had cut off contact with my parents due to family problems. From time to time I was hanging out with a friend named Arnold. One evening he took me out for a drink. I don't remember when I slept but when I woke up, I was here... With the lycans."
As he opened up to Skylar Mathis was filled with a terrible sadness that made him burst into tears, then he continued, Skylar listening silently.
"It makes me feel good to talk to you but what's the point? Before long, Grendel will be done with us."
"Grendel? Who is him?" Skylar asked.
"Well, how come you don't know him? Oh! I get it. You haven't been to his lab yet. As far as I know, Grendel is a beta to the Lycan King, but he's a scientist first and foremost a madman who likes above all to carry out experiments on our congeners."
Surprised by what she had just heard, Skylar exclaimed. "And me who thought I was the only werewolf to be held here. So... there would be others."
"Obviously yes. When I arrived here, someone was occupying your cell, his name was Evan. Grendel was testing a regeneration potion on him. After injecting it he inflicted serious injuries on him to see how quickly his body was regenerating. We used to talk through that wall, much like you and I are now. But one morning, I did not hear his voice anymore."
"Grendel had him killed?" Skylar asked in dismay.
"I guess Evan eventually succumbed. And you, how long have you been here?"
"It'll be two weeks soon, I think. heh! But if you've been here so long, how have you never noticed my presence?"
As if exhausted by the conversation, Mathis sighed before answering.
"Every time he takes me to his lab, Grendel injects me with substances that can put me to sleep for several days. They are probably strong sedatives."
"So you must have been asleep since I arrived here."
"I think so. Initially, he exposed me to the full moon and forced my transformation. But since then, I don't know what he does to me in my sleep."
Mathis fell silent, and they both remained silent for a moment, then he broke the silence with a fake laugh before talking.
"Now that you know we're going to die, tell me. How did they get to you?" he asked.
Skylar proceeded to tell her story from her first encounter with Asher to her a*******n to the Lycan King.
From time to time, Mathis interrupted her by questioning her to better understand her incredible story.
Skylar was freeing herself by talking. She had found in Mathis a sort of outlet for her suffering.
As she continued to speak, she noticed out of the corner of her eye a figure posted in front of the bars of her cell and turned her head to look: it was Ginger.
Skylar jumped and backed away. "What do you want again? Didn't you get what you wanted?"
"Oh! My dear. I was only enjoying the show. Seeing you alone chatting away like crazy is a beauty! Only, I'm here for a whole other reason. I'm here to announce that the sentence has fallen. In two days you will be publicly executed... By Asher." Ginger said, a sinister smile tugging at the corner of her lips.
