Where you belong

Watched

Lily woke with a shiver, the room felt cold. She wriggles backwards hoping to feel Jakes warm, comforting body but is met with a cold emptiness. His side of the bed was empty.

Lily opened her eyes and looked about. It was still dark out, and the window was open, letting in an icy wind.

She shivers and tries to pull the duvet around her more. But the butterly cold wind was too much.

Wrapping the duvet around herself she walks over to the window trying to slide it shut. As she does a movement catches her attention. She looks out into the dark and sees a pair of green eyes staring back at her from the forests edge. Whatever or whoever they are, appears to be watching her.

As she watches, she sees the eyes move closer. Eventually coming out of the tree line, Lily is shocked to see a huge wolf step out of the shadows of the trees.

Whilst difficult to see much in the very little light, Lily couldn’t miss the wolfs large size. She thought Jake had been huge when she first saw him shift, but this wolf seemed to be in a completely different league. The tiny amount of moonlight appeared to glint off of it’s coat in a silvery hue. As the gigantic beast slowly pads towards her, it’s eyes never leaving her own.

She suddenly snaps to her senses and tries harder to get the window closed.

With a sharp tug it suddenly moves and slams shut. Lily can’t help but give one last glance at her watcher before running back to the bed and hiding under the cover.

As she lay there in the darkness, she suddenly hears the bedroom door open.

She lays there frozen, her breath catches in her throat.

As she listens she can hear somebody step into the room, hesitate, before walking towards the bed.

She can feel the presence next to the bed, but daren’t breathe or move.

As the presence moves away, she strains to hear where it has gone to. She suddenly feels the mattress dip, and cowers deeper into the duvet. As the duvet lifts up she suddenly feels a hand on her shoulder, at that moment she suddenly feels a tingling through her body. She immediately feels calm and safe, knowing the one person who’s touch could make her feel like that.

She turns around, and pushes herself against his hard body.

Jake places a finger under her chin and tilts her head to look at him.

“Lily whats wrong, I can hear your heart racing and you smell scared!”

Lily groans “Jake it’s nothing” she mumbles. She hears a low grumble in his chest, and she knows he is fully aware she is lying.

“I just woke up, and you weren’t here. It was cold, and I must have got spooked by the darkness outside. I thought I saw something watching me outside”.

At this she feels Jake stiffen, he gets out of the bed and strides over to the window opening it with ease. He sniffs several times and Lily hears him let out a loud, menacing growl.

“Jake??!” she whimpers, curling herself into a ball against the headboard.

Jakes head snaps round and he rushes over to Lily pulling her into his arms.

“Shhhh Lily it’s okay!!!” he whispers. As he gently rocks her backwards and forwards, stroking her head.

“I’m sorry if I scared you” he mutters into her hair.

“Oh Jake, it wasn’t you. But I realised from your reaction that I hadn’t imagined somebody out there, watching me. What if it’s linked to me being kidnapped?!?” she sobs out. Shivering at the thought.

Jake pulls her in tighter to his chest. “Shh Lily you are safe! I won’t let anything happen to you. I’ve already got wolves out looking for whoever it was!”

Lily stops at this and looks up at him, “but how? You’ve only just heard about it!”

Jake brushes her hair off of her forhead and kisses it.

“Lily as wolves, we can communicate with each other through a mindlink. As Alpha it means I can instruct members of my pack in such times as this!”

“That’s quite cool!” she exclaims, momentarily forgetting her fears.

As she settles into his warm, safe arms her racing heart starts to slow and soon her eyelids flutter closed as she drifts back off.

Jake remains awake, holding a conversation in his head, as he holds his sleeping mate protectively in his arms.
