Chapter1
Jake had just finished his daily part-time work. He smiled sheepishly each time he remembered he was going back home to meet his girlfriend. Bella had always waited for Jake to get home each time it was his paycheck.
“Here you go. This is your pay for the month of November. I must commend you, Jake. You did a very nice job, so I decided to tip you with $50 more.” Jake's boss said with a smile,
“Thank you, ma.” Jake said with his smile as he bowed his face to the ground. He felt relieved.
Bella would always claim more than eighty percent of his salary each time he was paid, but Jake wasn't bothered. It was the things you do for love.
He immediately counted the money as his boss walked away. It was simple; he was going to get her the handbag he had seen at the boutique earlier on.
Jake's cheap Samsung phone rang loudly. He quickly clutched his pocket as he ran towards the men's bathroom. Some of his colleagues knew who was calling. They whispered behind him and laughed each time he was not there.
“Another calm from Miss World.” One of them said, and they all roared with laughter.
“I can't believe he had never changed that phone since he got here. Where the hell is he pumping all that money into?” Another said
Jake entered the toilet and immediately picked up his call. “Where the hell did you keep your phone?” Bella yelled at him over the phone. “But you do know I was at work. Phones are off-limits, and my boss mustn't even catch me. What is the matter? Jake asked
“You do know you are getting paid today, right?” Bella told him immediately.
“And?” Jake replied. “I will be waiting for you at home, and you better not be late.” Bella said coldly, and the line went dead. Jake hung his head, feeling a little down, but then he cheered up, remembering that he was going to get her the fancy handbag. That should make her let him off this hook this time.
Jake wanted to pay his tuition fee for the semester, and not paying in time means he is going to have an extra year while his mates go on to the next class.
The day went fast, and soon they were done with work. As Jake got into the boutique, he immediately went for the bag he had seen earlier and paid for it.
It was nearby, wrapped with the word,
”I love you.”
Jake got her some flowers too. As he got home, he was met with a cold attitude once again from Bella, who didn't welcome him. “I got you this.” Jake said slowly with a sad face. Bella raised her eyebrows to look at the gift he had brought her. “Is this for me?” Bella asked, staring at the bag sheepishly.
Jake nodded and went into the kitchen to fix lunch immediately. They had finished earlier than expected at work today. “So how much was your salary?” Bella asked
“I was paid enough for my tuition fee. I had to pay that tomorrow.” Jake said from the kitchen, and the tension grew harder between them. Jake wakes back in with the bowl of noodles he wanted to eat. He wondered what Bella had been doing on the phone ever since he got back in. “Are you busy?” Jake asked
Bella didn't reply as her gaze was fixed on the screen. Jake kept mute and continued to eat his food. After some time, Bella threw her phone at him. “That is the list of what I am ordering.” She said with a smirk across her face like she was expecting Jake to say something.
Jake grabbed her phone, and color drained from her face. “What?!” He shouted as he choked on his food.
He stared back at Bell, who didn't see a big deal in what she ordered. “I am sure your monthly salary can foot all that.” Bella stared at him. “But I bought you a designer bag. Can you just manage this, and I will get you all of this next month? This money is for my…” Jake was about to complete his words when Bella snapped at him.
“This again! All you ever do is complain ever since we started dating. It is either you need to buy some textbooks or some exercise books. You are never buoyant enough to take me on a proper date, and you can't even get yourself new stuff. Look at the phone you have been using; that is cheap, and you can't even buy yourself the latest iPhone. All you do is complain about how poor you are, Jake. I am beginning to get tired of this relationship already.”
Jake was lost; the money he was having was definitely for his tuition fees, and not paying it means he would have to have an extra year. “Can't you be understanding? That bag I got you cost a lot, and it is even the listed trend.”
“This? You call this garbage the latest trend?” Bella picked the bag up, and immediately the handle broke. “This is fake! I can't believe you are so dumb to even realize that.
The words were hitting Jake in the gut. He wanted to talk, but the fear of losing Bella gnawed at him. He can't lose her right now, not after everything he had to endure for her. He knew this was going to cause a rift between them, but Jake was ready to work extra time and make sure he gets the money to buy her just what she asked for. “Can I get all of this later? Just give me time to work for the money.” Jake said apologetically.
“Give you time? And what happens to the money you are holding? Can't you fix my cart and get your tuition fee later?” Bella bellowed at him. “But Bella, the portal closes tomorrow.“ Jake looked at her face. “Wait! How is that any of my business?” Bella replied.
The atmosphere was thick with tension as Jake stared at the cold-faced lady who was his girlfriend. He was about to talk when a message popped up right in his hand.
Jake read the message, and his face went pale.
