Louise's POV
It takes some time but eventually I look up at her after I feel the tears finally stopping. "Alright.. Distract me.. Please." I ask as she nods vigorously before taking my hand into hers. "I will do my best.. Let's just teach you the basics and I bet that will distract you for the moment." I nod with her as I slowly stand with her help. She let's out a deep breath before closing her eyes but still holding my hand, I feel her grip tighten as the light takes over us again.
I feel so light as if I am drifting through the clouds, and maybe I am. We go so fast through the sky that I cannot see anything around and just hope she is taking to some place that really will take my mind from this even though that will be a hard task to complete. We appear in the alley between two old brick buildings. When we emerge from the dark alley and under the radiating sign lights, I can see blinking from above us. I glanced up just for my eyes to lock onto a sign that says, Buckle Up, country bar.
"What is this place? Something significant, or is there someone in there at needs our help? Can we hear their cries for help?" I ask with so much excitement at the thought as she giggles and shakes her head. The smile that continues to grow on her face shows me that, at least, she is amused by my ideas, even if they are wrong. "No we can't hear any pleas for our assistance. It is just easiest to go to places like this that people come to just to meet other people, so they are open to the call of love, with our assistance of course." She says as I nod and think about just that.
"Ok so let's start this tutorial off slowly and if you have questions, just let me know." Anna says this with so much confidence that I anxiously nod, just wanting to see what she can do. "Alright, since you're just starting this week we will begin with the bow and arrow.. They are more precise without getting too close to really be noticed. Eventually, you will be like a breeze through the leaves, you will be able to drift through a crowd without being noticed by anyone but affecting everyone." She says this with confidence in me which is surprising, it's as if it will be something that does come naturally to me.
I guess I can argue since I supposedly already know what to do. She snaps her fingers as the bow and quiver appear out of nowhere and into her hands. I stare in awe as she hands them to me. I glance at them seeing the detail engraved within the wooden stem of the bow. It looks like this is something that would take so long to make. When gripping it within my hands I can't help but to trace my fingers over the carvings and just enjoying the intricate beauty, before noticing that she is trying to hand me the quiver as well.
I get excited at that sight as I grab it, seeing that someone has spent a lot of time detailing this leather as well. The swirls and flowers that are sewn into the quiver are some kind of details that I have never seen with my own eyes, but apparently someone has a talent I have never possessed with amazing details.
My eyes bounce to the top of the bag just to see that it only has a couple of arrows. This is noticed by the little bit of feathered ends hanging out of the bag. I know how to use this item, but I don't have that much confidence within myself to think that I wouldn't need more than this. "I don't have many arrows, I will probably need more.. Way more." I state as she waves her hand, making it look as if that is not an issue at all.
"You just start with arrows and then you will learn to develop this within yourself, and it will be something you can eventually do just by the touch of your hand.. But for now the quiver will be what you start with, and the arrows will be endless.. They will automatically replenish when one is used.. We are magical beings and know how to use our magic to our advantage.. Love will always be around so we need to always be prepared to help with the delivery." She declares this as I think about it but nodding as well to let her know I am paying attention.
I swing the quiver strap over my shoulder as I grip the bow's stem tightly into my hand. I pull an arrow out and place it on the string before pulling it back wanting to start this. "Ok.. So do I just hit someone with an arrow then go right to another person?" I ask trying to understand how to do this, as she instantly shakes her head before putting her hand on the tip of the arrow I was aiming with to stop me before I can let it fly.
"No it's more precise than that.. Let me show you." She declares before taking my hand as our wings flutter before we turn to a little lights floating through the sky easily like cutting through butter. We land as I glance around seeing we're inside of the bar as the band plays while everyone around us are dancing to the music as she leads me through them. I start to panic as I reached up hanging my hands over the top of my wings.
"Won't they see our wings?" I ask as she shakes her head. "When landing, our wings automatically cloak themselves. The people here don't notice much, besides they only see what we allow them to see, so if we say no wings it's no wings." She declares as I nod.. because that is a nice feature I didn't expect, but makes complete sense. We take a look around as I am following on her heels. The people look strange.
They are all glowing with different colors around their bodies. Some radiate in red, others purple, a couple in blue and some here and there in orange, even yellow. Every color of the rainbow is glowing on this dance floor.. It's strange, as if they have their own bright light attached to them when I can clearly see that they don't. She leans in close to my side, I think knowing exactly what I have seen, to clarify what my eyes cannot as she is whispering into my ear. "You see the colors?" O nod my head hearing her hum out.
"Their aura is what color glows on the outside of their ring.. Showing what kind of a person they are.. You can't match them with just anyone, only with certain ones, as long as their souls match.. You want to know how to choose who will work?" she asks as I vigorously nod. She points at one of the men that is radiating blue. "You see the blue surrounding him?" she asks as I nod before she adds, "Do you see what is in the center? The light flowing within the center of him and closer to his heart between all the bright blue? That is the color that is showing what he needs for his soul. So take a look and tell me what color you think it is and here's a clue, it's not blue." she states as I squint my eyes staring at his chest.
It's hard to tell, but I think that I can see a gold glowing from within him.. Right about where his heart should be. I nod again before saying softly. "I see a yellow or gold glowing within him. " She smiles at me with pride as she states. "You got it.. That is what he needs in his life, is someone who radiates the yellow on the outside and blue in the middle.. So take a look around and then pair the person with someone who would match their soul.
My eyes ping around the area, jumping from one person to the next until I see the match. "Oh! Over there, that pretty lady has yellow around her and blue in her heart!" I say with excitement as she smiles big. "Perfect, now watch me." She says as she snaps her fingers to get her own bow and arrow. She points it right at the man, shooting it, and as it makes contact with him it disappears, and before he can look for anything else, his eyes are following her other arrow to the woman I have picked out. She looks shocked, but as their eyes lock, it is as if there is nothing else around them.
They drift through the crowd until they are standing with one another and talking, until they are both smiling and then start dancing. "That is amazing.. Can they feel the arrow?" I ask as she shrugs her shoulders. "You would think so by the way it gets their attention, but no one ever looks our way. They are always distracted by who we have picked, as if they are in a deep and unbreakable trance until they connect. This happens every time." She says as I smile and say, "What if it doesn't work?" Her eyebrows scrunch at that idea as she shakes her head.
"I have never heard of such things, so I can't imagine that is possible," she explains as I smile and nod. "So.. What is my aura showing?" I ask with excitement and curiosity. "We don't have the glow because we bring people together, so we don't have a match for ourselves." I shake my head thinking about that. "But we were people once, right? So how can we not have a color? I mean there has to be something there if we can have lovers, right?" I ask, thinking about that, but she just shakes her head.
"I don't see any colors around you and, as for lovers, you can take whomever you want for that time being, but it can't get serious since they will be leaving to get their own match, so it's only you who will get hurt if you get attached." "That's so sad and lonely." I declare as I looked up at her seeing the same sadness on her features.
"It is.. It makes you feel as if you don't deserve love at first, since we cannot receive it.. But you later learn that it is a sacrifice that we chose to make, just like men of your time when leaving to battle in the war. It is a sacrifice made for the greater good, and to me that means more when I think about it like that. It's hard at times, I won't lie to you about that, but this is what being a cupid is.. We are here to bring love, peace and happiness to the world, which is foremost the future of the world." She declares, as I get even sadder when thinking about that.
"That's admirable, and I appreciate it when I think of the situation like that. But when thinking about the details, to me, it seems strange to think that it's impossible for a cupid to get a match for themselves. Especially with so many people on the earth, just thinking that there is not one single person that would be good for a cupid seems even more improbable. Like how?" I stated in disbelief and shock as I watched her head shake.
"Well, that's not exactly the case. There have been a handful of cupids that have found a match for themselves, because there are whispers that we do have matches out there for each one of us, but the problem is that there is only one for each cupid and, in this world filled with people, it is near to impossible for us to find them. For all the regular people out here, they have multiple options that would work and make them happy for the rest of their lives, so things are much easier for finding matches for them, but not us." she explains having my full attention now.
I feel a tiny bit of hope in my enthusiasm when thinking about that idea, that even though it is a small chance, there is a chance for me to find someone for myself. "It's not even just the fact that there is only one match out there for us. Since we live forever, we never know what era they are born into, let alone know if we will be finding them ever. So, that is almost impossible to do. Instead of wasting our time and getting our hopes up just to be let down, none have spent their time looking at all just knowing that it probably won't happen. It's more productive to spend your time bringing the world together with happiness than spending your time looking for something that is probably not there and will only make things harder on your heart." She explains sadly as I nod.
I do agree with that, seeing her perspective clearly, especially since she has been doing this much longer than I ever have. What's the point in looking when there is not anyone there? I think that if anything it would make me more depressed and feeling worse after each failed attempt, just as I have felt in life when I brought so many others together when, in the end, it just left me alone. "So the cupids that did find their other half, did they shoot an arrow at them?" I ask as she shakes her head.
"From what I understand, their natural connection has to happen on its own by them finding you, and discovering for themselves. They didn't even know it until the connection, because it was so strong, it was undeniable. Then, I heard, they spoke to the elders and found out that the person they spoke of was their match. Like I said, though there have only been a handful of people able to do this and cupids have been around for a very, very long time." Humming out, I nod, taking her warning and observation seriously.
