A LEAP OF FAITH

CHAPTER 19: A LEAP OF FAITH The contract sat on Clara's desk for most of the night. She had looked at it more times than she could count. The pages were still the same. The words were still the same. But somehow, her feelings about them were no longer the same. When Ethan first placed the contract in front of her, she had only seen it as an agreement. A deal. A solution to a problem. She had been desperate. She had needed help. And Ethan Blackwood had offered her a way out of the difficult situation she was facing. At that time, she never imagined that the man behind the contract would become someone she would slowly begin to understand. Someone whose silence she could read. Someone whose cold expression no longer scared her. Someone who, despite everything, was trying to protect her in his own way. Clara leaned back in her chair and looked out of the window. Her life had changed so quickly. A few months ago, she was trying to figure out how to handle her own problems. Now, she was living in Blackwood Estate, involved in Ethan's world, and standing at a point where one decision could change everything. She picked up the pen. But she didn't sign immediately. Because she needed to be honest with herself. Was she doing this because she felt obligated? Because Ethan had helped her? Because she had no other choice? No. That wasn't the reason. The truth was, somewhere along the way, things had changed. Ethan was no longer just the cold billionaire who had offered her a contract. He was the man who remembered small details about her. The man who listened even when he didn't agree. The man who was slowly allowing her to see the person behind the walls he had built. Clara looked down at the final page. Then she signed her name. For a moment, she simply stared at it. A strange feeling filled her chest. Fear. Excitement. Uncertainty. But also something else. Trust. The next morning, Clara arrived at Blackwood Corporation. She had been there before, but today felt different. Maybe because this time, she wasn't coming as someone who was unsure of her place. She was coming with a decision. After informing the receptionist, she was directed to Ethan's office. When she entered, Ethan was standing near his desk, reading through some documents. He looked up immediately. "Clara." She walked toward him. "I need to give you something." His eyes moved to the folder in her hand. For a second, he didn't say anything. Then he understood. "The contract." She nodded. "Yes." Ethan's expression remained calm, but Clara noticed the slight change in his eyes. Surprise. "You signed it." It wasn't a question. She placed the folder on his desk. "I did." Ethan looked at the document but didn't pick it up immediately. Instead, he looked at her. "Are you sure?" The question surprised her. Out of everything he could have said, she hadn't expected that. "You thought I wasn't?" "I thought you needed more time." Clara smiled slightly. "Maybe I did." A small silence passed between them. "But I made my decision." Ethan finally picked up the folder. His fingers rested on the cover for a moment. Clara expected the usual Ethan reaction. A simple nod. A business-like response. Something cold and controlled. But instead, she saw something different. Relief. And maybe even happiness. It was brief. Almost invisible. But Clara saw it. "You are smiling," she said. Ethan immediately looked at her. "I am not." She raised an eyebrow. "You are." "I don't smile." "Everyone smiles." "Not everyone." She tried not to laugh. "But you did." For once, Ethan didn't argue. He looked down at the contract again. "This means a lot." The sincerity in his voice caught her off guard. Clara became quiet. Because Ethan Blackwood wasn't someone who easily admitted when something mattered to him. "I thought you would be happy because the agreement is complete," she said. Ethan looked at her. "It isn't just about the agreement." Those words stayed between them. Because Clara understood what he meant. This wasn't just about a signature. It was about trust. About her choosing to believe him. About her choosing to step into his world willingly. "Thank you, Clara." She looked at him. "You're welcome." For a moment, neither of them moved. And for the first time, Clara noticed something. The distance between them was disappearing. Not because of the contract. But because of the choices they were making. Ethan placed the folder carefully on his desk. "I promise you something." Clara looked at him. "What?" "I will never use this contract to control you." The seriousness in his voice made her believe him. "I know." A small pause. "But don't think signing this means I will stop arguing with you." A faint look of amusement appeared on his face. "I was not expecting that." "Good." She smiled. "Because you should know by now that I don't just agree with everything you say." Ethan looked at her. And this time, he actually smiled. A real one. Small. But real. And Clara realized that maybe this was the side of Ethan Blackwood that almost nobody ever got to see. Not the CEO. Not the billionaire. Just Ethan. For a few moments, neither Clara nor Ethan spoke. The atmosphere between them had changed. It was not the uncomfortable silence they had shared when they first met. It was different. A silence filled with understanding. Ethan looked at the folder on his desk. A simple signature had changed the direction of their lives. But strangely, he didn't feel the pressure he usually felt when making important decisions. Instead, he felt something he rarely allowed himself to feel. Peace. "You know," Clara said, breaking the silence, "I expected you to react differently." Ethan looked at her. "How?" "I don't know." She thought for a moment. "Maybe I expected you to act like this was another business deal. Like you would immediately start discussing arrangements and rules." A small smile appeared on her face. "Very CEO of you." Ethan looked away. "I do have a reputation." "Yes, you do." She walked closer to the desk. "But today you actually looked happy." Ethan didn't deny it this time. "I am." The honesty surprised her. Because Ethan Blackwood was not someone who easily showed his emotions. "Why?" He looked at her. "Because you made a choice." Clara became quiet. "You could have walked away." His voice became softer. "You had every reason to." She looked down. "But I didn't." "No." A small pause. "You didn't." There was something different in the way he said it. Not like someone who had won. But like someone who was grateful. Clara had spent so much time thinking Ethan saw everything as a transaction. A deal. A responsibility. But maybe she had been wrong. Maybe behind all that coldness was someone who simply didn't know how to show what he felt. "Are you always this serious?" she asked suddenly. Ethan raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" "Everything with you feels so intense." She smiled. "Contracts. Meetings. Problems. Plans." "You forgot work." "I didn't forget work. You remind everyone about it enough." For a second, Ethan looked like he was trying not to smile. Clara noticed immediately. "There it is again." "What?" "That almost smile." "I don't know what you are talking about." "You do." Ethan shook his head slightly. And Clara couldn't help laughing. It was a small moment. Nothing dramatic. Nothing that would appear in the news. But for them, it mattered. Because these were the moments that slowly changed everything. Later that afternoon, Ethan returned his attention to the documents waiting on his desk. Clara prepared to leave the office. Before she reached the door, Ethan spoke. "Clara." She turned around. "Yes?" "Thank you." She looked at him. "You already said that." "I know." His expression softened slightly. "But I wanted to say it again." For a moment, Clara didn't know what to say. So she simply nodded. "I'll see you at home." The words came naturally. And both of them noticed it. Home. Not just Blackwood Estate. Not just a place she was staying because of an agreement. Something about the word felt different. That evening, when Ethan returned, Clara was already waiting in the living room. "You look tired," she said. "I had a long day." She smiled. "That is the most obvious thing you have ever said." Ethan looked at her. "Are you always going to tease me?" "Probably." "Why?" "Because someone has to remind you that you are human." For a moment, Ethan simply looked at her. Then he nodded. "Maybe you're right." Clara smiled. She was beginning to realize that Ethan's changes were small. A smile. A conversation. A simple admission. But with Ethan, small things meant everything. Before, he had built walls around himself. Now, little by little, he was allowing her to see beyond them. And she didn't know exactly when it happened... But the man she once thought she could never understand was slowly becoming someone she wanted to know more about. However, neither of them knew that the decision they had made today would soon be tested. Because while they were learning to trust each other... The problems waiting outside their world had not disappeared. And sooner or later, they would have to face them together..
