Chapter 4

1003 Words
Evan went through Alice's documents closely, she wasn't only intelligent, she was smart as she'd given him answers to every of his questions and even countered him at some point. He knew he had no excuse whatsoever to not employ her but he was skeptical about letting her in. Employing Alice would mean allowing her close to him, they'd basically do most of everything together and he'd have to keep seeing her, that's something Evan Sterling doesn't want to do. His last secretary has taught him a huge lesson, one he wouldn't forget in a jiffy. She'd made him fall in love with her only for him to be a victim of her fraudulent activity and heart break. "Is there anything genuine you can offer this company? One you think no one could come close to? Basically, what impact do you think you could make in this industry?" He asked while looking closely into her eyes and watched as he made her uncomfortable. If he couldn't tell her why he wouldn't employ her then he might as well just appear creepy and make her uncomfortable enough to not want to take the job and at the same time, he needed an helping hand and Alice seemed like the perfect person to offer that, he smirked when he realized his act was working but she was trying so hard to not let him see that. "Well, I think I could really help-" she started saying. "How, is what I'm asking." Evan said and she shot him a deadly stare before calming herself, she hated being cut short while talking and it looked like Evan was just trying everything in his power to annoy her. "I was getting there," she almost snapped, "looking through my files you would actually see that I'm not only good in accounting but also in economics and book keeping and management too, I could handle any job given to me in that aspect and hiring me would make the company more productive and-" she went on and on and Evan almost regretted asking her that question, he rubbed the back of his neck before cutting her off again. "What if you don't get the job?" He cuts in and this being the second time he was cutting her off, she was already losing it. "Then congratulations to whoever you'd employ," She tried her best to say that with a smile, "also, I won't feel like I wasn't good enough because I know myself and I know what I'm capable of." She added. "Interesting." Evan said, meaning it. She was not only intelligent, she was also confident and he loved how she wore her confidence. "How much sugar should be in a black coffee?" He asked, digressing from the main topic. "What?" She asked, confused. "You heard me, you're not only going to be working in an office but also around me and you should know these things before coming here for an interview." He said with a smirk. "How could I.." She said under her breath, "three?" She finally answered, unsure of her answer. "Wrong," He snapped, almost making her fall off the chair, "none." He added and Alice was almost losing her mind, if he doesn't want her he could just say so. "Coward." She let out. "What?" He asked, hoping she'd take her words back but she didn't. "You heard me, if you didn't want me, you could just tell me that but instead you kept asking me these questions that have nothing to do with my job." She finally snapped as she stood up to leave, picking up her files to storm out of his office. "Close the door behind you." Evan smiled. "You know what? A Jerk, that's what you are, not a CEO." She said as she stomped out in anger. Evan picked up his intercom to put a call through to the lady at the front desk, he liked Alice and with a girl like her around, he'll be constantly reminded of how much he dislikes her, "she's fit to work with me" he thought. "I don't know who the hell he thinks he is." Alice muttered under her breath as she stormed out of the office in anger. "Miss Alice." The lady at the front desk called, making her stop in her tracks and she turned after taking a deep breath. "Please wait, the boss is making a decision and I'm afraid you shouldn't leave until he has as there's a possibility of you getting the job." She said and her heart leapt for joy but she managed to conceal it. The front desk lady offered her a seat and left Alice alone to go and see the boss. "I need to pee." She said to herself as she stood and walked around the building in search of the restroom, she finally found it and looking at herself in the mirror, she did a small dance of joy as she shrieked in excitement. "I got the job," she sang and stopped immediately as someone could be watching her, "I should've been nicer," she said to herself in a low tone as she sat on the toilet to pee, "he wasn't nice too, why should I have been?" She added with a hiss. Getting up, she walked to the sink to wash her hands and sanitize, she was all smiles until she left the bathroom to make her way back to the waiting area. Alice sat down patiently, waiting for Evan to make his decision and for her to start work immediately. Her phone rang as she tried to make her way out of the bathroom, she checked and realized it had no caller ID, reluctantly, she answered the call and taking the phone to her ear, she let out silently "Hello." "Alice, darling?" The deep familiar voice she would always recognize was called from over the phone. Alice stopped in her tracks immediately as she froze and her eyes widened in fear. What?
