Chapter 40: Where it shall begin

1104 Words
There was a reason why Welven initially planned on sending Arion's party to a quest where many has fallen and died. For this very reason, he was intrigued to hear his explanation regarding the subject. "Althas Kingdom is on the brink of falling. And by falling, I imply we're being attacked unbeknownst to our recognition." The Supreme Magister's face is very serious. The situation is a bit stifling, Arion knew some strange event is going on. "Oh? You're implying the Mythical Beast is a threat even for the Supreme Magister?" He began looking at the bigger picture. "For starters, the Goddess of Sun and Moon, Solaris who we worship wholeheartedly, had suddenly abandoned the kingdom. What I mean is her blessings have waned over the past few months, and not only ours but the other three major kingdoms as well." Welven stated. "Then what about the beast that you guys don't know its form? What is the connection between your premise?" His eyes frowned, puzzled by the current circumstances. "The Goddess' blessings are important to us. But because of lessened blessings, monsters including the Mythical Beast are attacking the outskirts within our kingdom's border." He cleared his throat before continuing. "Now, there is a mystery that shrouds about the beast we are so afraid of." When the conversation is now raising to the most serious part, Yulia entered the room without saying a thing or two and just sat in a vacant chair near Welven. "I apologize for my actions earlier. You may continue now, I'm listening to all of you the moment I walked out just so I could skip boring name introductions." Yulia's face is straight dead-blank. Her eyes were like someone who lost the will to live, yet Arion can see a faint fire masking behind her personality. They actually ignored her so Arion interjected. "This beast is the strongest... no, probably strongest including everything we had." He served his own cup with another round of tea. "What's the mystery then?" "Truth to be told, none of us actually encountered this beast. Yet many mages who have solid proof they encountered it, including you and the fire mage, Lilith, believe it truly exists." Welven was merely stating the truth. "Not only that, we have speculation it purposely ignores parties that have at least 3 Diamond equivalent to Wizard or Witches or 1 Magister. However, when a Magister goes solo, they simply disappear without a trace." Fey explained for them, her arm's crossed. What Arion learned opened up another possibility; the first one is that maybe this Mythical Beast hailing from another kingdom is specifically targeting the chosen ones, like him and Yuna, or he's also thinking into account that the beast must be devouring the strongest mages in the Althas Kingdom since its ultimate goal is to bring it down. "We have not much information about it, though I'm sure by disappearing, you mean they cease to exist without a trace? It doesn't justify the fact you sent us to our death, and we only got lucky we survived it." Arion was telling a bluff since he already had seen through their facade. "You're mistaken. I told you that this beast doesn't show itself to Magisters and only displays whenever we are alone. However, it also appears whenever it detects weak mages that had no potential in magic then it also attacks those, and you're the greatest model." Welven sounds like he's insulting him rather than giving an example. "How dare you say that to him?!" Yuna slammed the table gritting her teeth. Arion gestures she should calm down and tells. "So it basically attacks those who are weak and devours the strong who are isolated. Though you said I had no potential in magic? More like I don't have the ability to use magic." They were quite surprised regarding what he just said. "Wait, you mean you're not using Concealment Magic just like that lady with the crimson hair?" Fey couldn't believe that was the case, she's also referring to Yuna. "It is actually true. He accepted the aptitude test and he failed miserably." Adriel signaled Sarra and she gave her a document of Arion's test result. "Hey! You don't need to tell out loud. And why do you have that when I don't even have a copy?" Arion complains over trivial things too occasionally. The usually reserved and cool Hugh stepped up and slapped his hands right above the round table to get their attention. "Unforgivable! You let someone who failed the aptitude test become a full-pledge mage?" They don't have to read the mood so they could understand he's fuming and angry. Both Reinhart and Welven kind of sighed deeply because he knew what he had in store for them. "Here we go again with his pitiful sense of justice and responsibility." Fey also couldn't help but get discouraged, even Yulia was also the same and went to sit on the sofa before she resumed what she was reading. "I passed because I did it, so what's your problem?" Arion's not the type to argue over things, though he hated the fact Hugh was condescending. Things are getting pumped, Welven planned on fixing the situation sooner, or else they already perceived what will be going to ensue. "I don't like the look he had..." Lilith's scared of his dead-serious demeanor. "As the Magister who assessed his ability by myself, you shouldn't stick your nose where it doesn't belong." Adriel was sweating but she stepped up anyways for Arion because she understands that if she did nothing, Hugh would revoke her mage privileges. He will be separated from the party once it happened. "Then if you are doubting his skills, why won't you assess him then? Going here is a waste of time. After dealing with you, we are so leaving!" Yuna snapped out of it which made things harder for him. "Don't jump to things just like that–" Arion's sentence was halted when Hugh tersely interjected. "Fine! Let us find out what he can do in an actual battlefield!" He's truly infuriated and dragged Arion out of the room to another chamber next to the left hallway. "Why things escalate faster than I can react? Well, it seems I got used to it, so I might as well go with the flow. So I can also prove myself." Arion encouraged himself. "That's right, small tiny steps ahead, this is where your arduous adventure shall begin..." A faint voice of the Goddess parted, he turned back to see Marget's indistinctive smile at the corner of his eye.
