Chapter 31: Fear

994 Words
The vast greenery of the Boulderkeep Plateau expands further and higher than Arion could have imagined. Lands were so high these elevated ground could almost reach the clouds up high as the neverending clear blue skies warm his nostalgia from the world he left behind. Grasses were dancing on the vast field, irises and flowers of myriad hues and colors have the essence of tranquility. A kind of peaceful life Arion only gets whenever he gets a vacation away from his laboratory, he found himself in awe of the beauty of the magical world. Not only the spectacle landscape caught his attention and rather the small critters running around the places, like horned rabbits, mountain boars, and various flying animals he had never seen before were freely fluttering above them. "Close your mouth, bugs will get through it." Adriel fitted his jaws. He gaped again while sightseeing around the paradise. "This place is beautiful yet..." Lilith didn't continue her sentence, although Arion heard her and came dashing beside her. "Right?! This wonderful plateau is way too amazing! I couldn't get enough of the view so I kind of space out." Arion ecstatically places his arm over her shoulders and together they began sightseeing walking freely around. "Still, you shouldn't be giving that much gold just for a ride. At least 10 silver coins are enough." Adriel reminded him to be frugal since despite him having a lot of golds somehow, they currently don't have a source of income for the meantime so she's being conservative. In reality, she's thinking now that Arion owns a part of her belongings, then he might as well pay for the monthly rent so she could have more time with her workshop without working extra. The only reason she became a deployable combat mage for accepting quests is that she could have enough currency to support her passion, which is further studying the art of alchemy. "Either way, what these mobs of boars doing blocking our way?" Arion asked as he was pointing at the horned boars that have their own status information. Monster: Field Boar Type: D-Class Level: 2 HP: 124 MP: 43 Wisdom: 1% Strength: 5% Dexterity: 1% Luck: 0% Each of the Field Boar is the same as the slimes he fought in the meadows during his first quest, except for their D-Class and low-status characteristics, their HP varies from 100 to 300 as the MP doesn't go beyond a hundred. Arion, Lilith, and Adriel found themselves surrounded by Field Boars since they got preoccupied with relishing the scenery. "Argh..." Adriel signed deeply. "Now we need to fend them off. Field Boars are usually calm when they are alone and once they group up, these beasts will attack anyone." She's not showing any kind of fear nor feeling the threat. "Are they strong?" Arion asked. "They will disperse again once the leader falls. Usually, with this count, there could be at least two Field Board leaders." Lilith took the liberty of answering his question. She drew her staff and prepared herself for the worse. "Well, it doesn't look like they were weak at all, but whatever." He jerked his hand and the Mechanical Exoskeleton around his body contracted around his arms and legs. The sun is giving off too much heat as he wanted to remove his polka-dotted sweater. To top it off, it's true the exoskeleton metal carapaces around his body are cold when under lower temperature, of course, it could be the same with high temperature. Arion who knew a few tricks of martial arts had undertaken a stance he would always see in a movie, gripping his fists and maintaining them at the height just in the middle of his chest as he bounces his left and right. The first initial move he took was searching for the two Field Board leaders that are motivating the rest. "Got you there," Arion muttered. He already had seen one of them upon noticing one of the boars had somehow three that is guarding the beast. He didn't think ahead and went straight for the kill darting directly towards its left flank. At the time when he was about to strike, he sensed an imminent danger and fall back 3 meters behind him. It turns out his hunch was correct as the two boars protecting their leader performed a pincer attack along with the trailing cold wind froze the grasses. "What the hell...? They can do elemental attacks?! Is this world the same with the show where they collect some animals wherever they go inside a science-defying ball?" Arion bickers over trivial things. "I don't know what you were talking about, but animals, beasts, and monsters can all control elemental attributes. For someone who grew up in a foreign country, you should know better." Adriel threw some castless magic spells of small fireballs by lazily pointing her index fingers. The field boars are all being killed one-by-one showing they truly are weak. Even Lilith's weak flames spell she cast can kill the monsters without breaking a sweat. "There are also rare monsters than can use higher magic, and they can be sold for a high amount when subjugated," Lilith said while she tirelessly produces a weak flamethrower enough to scare off the boars around. "Well, that's kinda sweet! Although It's kind of disappointing I can't use magic and these critters could do it. Life's unfair!" Arion cleaved the boars forward trying to cope up with his anger by beating the poor little creatures. There, he finally cornered the Field Board he was targeting earlier ago when he felt an adrenaline rush coursing through his veins. Unaware of what does his instinct is striving to tell him, Arion stepped back once again and intuitively prepared his guard. He clenched his fist while taking a defensive stance. As someone who already experienced death all the while transcendent at the pinnacle of humanity, he already knew what was going on. "This is bad... I don't need to understand animal behaviors, but... this Field Boar is giving way too much ominous aura than the rest." Arion, for the first time, felt an equivalent fear that can rival death itself.
