*****CHAPTER 5

BLAIR’S POV I exhaled a sigh of relief when I arrived at the gas station for my morning shift. It was well lit and surrounded by other buildings, which made me feel safer than I did at home. I greeted my coworker, Liz, a middle-aged woman, and got right to work. I couldn't help but be grateful for the distraction that the job provided as I filled up the tanks and attended to customers. It kept me busy and my mind occupied, leaving little time for me to think about my nighttime fears of being hunted by werewolves. I began to feel more at ease as the morning progressed. The sun was shining brightly, making the station feel even safer. I talked with Linda and the customers, and I felt almost normal again. I made the decision right then and there that I would work the morning shift from now on, even if it meant getting up earlier. It was a small price to pay for the relief it provided me. A group of teenage boys were chatting excitedly as they waited for one of their friends to emerge from the gas station store with some snacks. I overheard them while I was filling up a nearby car's tank. "Dude, I'm telling you, I saw it on this website," one of the boys said as he took out his phone. "It's a true representation of the white-haired werewolf in human form." "No way," another boy said, leaning in for a better look at the phone screen. "Let me look." I couldn't help but be curious, so I sneaked a peek at the phone screen as well. The boys huddled close together, their eyes glued to the phone as they excitedly whispered. "I heard that the white-haired werewolf was the most powerful of all werewolves," one of the boys mentioned. "With just a look, he could control other wolves." Another youngster shook his head. "That's just a myth." But I heard he was quite tall—well over seven feet—and extremely ripped. I tried to see the image on the phone screen, but with the boys huddled so close together, it was difficult. One of the boys eventually turned the phone around to show me. The image was clearly edited, with the white-haired werewolf's face superimposed onto a random body, much to my dismay. I couldn't help but scoff at the boys' enthusiasm, but I couldn't deny that my interest in the legendary werewolf had been piqued. I returned to filling up another car's tank when a woman entered the convenience store and caught my eye. The woman appeared to be wealthy and sophisticated, and she was purchasing a bottle of wine. The woman looked up as I watched her, and our gazes met. The woman smiled and walked over to me. "Good day, dear." "My name is Kate," she introduced herself, extending her hand to shake mine. I shook her hand, a little surprised. It wasn't often that customers introduced themselves, and Kath stood out from the crowd. "I'm Blair," I admitted shyly. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Blair." She smiled. "I'm new in town, and I just wanted to pick up a few things." "Don't you think this gas station is lovely?" I nodded, still surprised by the woman's friendliness. "Yes, it's a nice place to work," I confirmed. "I can imagine," Kath said as she took her wine and began to walk away. "Well, I'm not going to keep you from your work for much longer." "Blair, have a wonderful day." Kath then exited the store, leaving me perplexed by the interaction. Who was this woman, and why was she so eager to speak with me? I stood there, watching Kath walk away and into her car. A man with light-colored hair, just like hers, sat in the driver's seat. I couldn't help but feel uneasy as he locked his gaze on her. I got a better look at the man as the car drove away. His features were striking, with a strong jawline and piercing brown eyes that seemed to bore into my soul. He was dressed sharply, which only added to his intimidating demeanor. I couldn't stop wondering who this man was and why he was staring at me. I tried to brush it off and get back to work, but I couldn't get rid of the uneasy feeling that lingered after the encounter. My mind was still preoccupied with the mysterious couple as I attended to another car. I was curious about who they were and why they seemed so interested in me. "I'm so sorry; I didn't mean to ignore you," I apologized, trying to make amends. "Is there anything else I can help you with?" The customer shook his head and handed me the gas money. "Don't worry, dear." I see you're lost in thought. "It happens to even the best of us." I thanked the customer and watched as he drove away, slightly embarrassed by my brief distraction. I knew I had to concentrate on my work and not let my curiosity get the better of me. I couldn't believe my eyes as my gaze shifted from the departing customer to the tree in the distance. The white-haired werewolf from the rumors she'd overheard earlier was standing under the tree. He was staring at me with his eyes fixed on me. I was mesmerized for a moment, my mind flashing back to the first time I had met him, years ago in the forest. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, and for some reason, I felt safe. My trance was broken when another customer entered the store, diverting my attention. I couldn't help but cast glances back towards the tree as I assisted the customer, hoping to catch another glimpse of the mysterious creature. When I had a chance to look back, the werewolf had vanished. My heart sank slightly, disappointed that I had missed out on learning more about him. I wondered if I would ever be able to speak with him and find out what was going on.
