I was sleeping peacefully when all of a sudden I woke up. I didn’t know why, but I had this weird feeling and just as I was about to go back to bed Jaden mindlinked me.
‘Can you tell the patrol guards to stand down, there is a newly shifted wolf that is going to pass by the border.’
‘Why should they stand down?’ I asked.
‘I don’t think she is a threat. She seemed very scared of me and it didn’t look like she knew exactly what was going on when she shifted.’
‘Okay, I’ll tell them to stand down but in the morning I want you to tell me exactly what happened.’ I replied and cut the mindlink to Jaden to mindlink the patrol guards.
‘Stand down, there is a wolf passing by the border. Do not engage.’
‘Yes, Alpha.’ The lead patroller replied.
After that I tried to go back to bed, I got a few hours of sleep but soon woke up again. At this point it was about 4:45 AM and I knew I wasn’t going to be able to go back to sleep, so I decided that I would get some work done in my office. I walked into the bathroom and hopped in the shower. As the warm water ran across my skin my muscles relaxed and I took a deep breath. I washed off and stepped out of the shower, drying myself with a towel, I walked into my closet to find something to wear. I quickly put a shirt on a white button up shirt and some black dress pants, then I headed down the hall to my office. The floor creaked as I opened the wooden door. Once I got inside, I opened the curtains letting the sun pour through the windows. The sun had just started to pop up from behind the mountains in the distance. Different shades of yellows, pinks, and oranges were displayed across the horizon. I stared at it for a while wondering if my soulmate was staring at the same beautiful sunrise that I was. It was around 6:00 AM now and I was very concentrated on some pack finances when I heard a knock at the door.
“Come in.” I said. Jaden walked in and closed the door behind him. He approached my desk and sat at one of the leather chairs in front of me. Jaden has been my best friend since we were just pups. I’m a little bit older than Jaden so I have become like an older brother to him in a way.
“Hey.” Jaden says.
“Sup.”, I replied, “How was the party?”
“It was interesting…”, Jaden started. That’s when I remembered the wolf from last night. I diverted my attention to Jaden and put my paperwork to the side.
“Right, tell me what happened last night.” I said.
“Well, everything started off fine after you left. I was flirting with this really hot chick and all of a sudden someone yelled and everyone backed up. Turns out someone spilled their drink all over this girl and on the floor. That’s when me and that chick decided to go outside in the backyard to get some air. We were talking for a few minutes when some girl came out the door in a rush and bumped into me. She dropped her jeans jacket on the ground and said ‘Sorry’ and I told her that it was okay. She frantically picked it up and continued across the backyard and headed into the treeline. I don’t exactly remember why I followed her, I just got a weird feeling that something was wrong. I walked towards the woods and continued until I saw her. She was on her hands and knees as her bones were cracking. She suddenly looked up at me with this look of total fear and then she fully shifted into her wolf. Once she did she turned around and backed up upon seeing me, clearly afraid that I might hurt her. I put my hands up and said ‘It’s okay. I’m not going to hurt you.’ Then she looked down at her jean jacket and I backed up to give her room to grab it. She was large, almost the size of your wolf, with pure white thick fur but the thing that caught my attention was her emerald green eyes.”
“White fur and emerald green eyes?” I asked in disbelief.
“Yeah, why?”
“It’s just extremely rare. In the oldest legends pure white werewolves are said to be the most loved by the moon goddess, her blessed children. And I guess that she is one of them. But, the emerald green eyes are uncommon and I don't know much about them. I’ll have to do some more research.”
“After she grabbed her jacket, some moron yelled asking if anyone was back there and when she heard that she got scared and took off. I knew that if she kept going that way she would definitely alarm the guards and just think she was trying to go home. That’s when I asked you to tell the guards to stand down.”
“The guards said she just passed by the border and didn’t try to enter and she didn’t smell of burning timber like most rogues do.” I said. “We need to figure out who this girl is.” Jaden nodded in agreement and then left. I spent about another hour or two on paperwork but I couldn’t get this wolf off my mind. I needed to clear my head and the best way to do that is to train. So I headed to the training grounds, to my surprise Jaden was also there. I walked over to him and we started sparring, I took him down most of the time. After an hour or so, we were finished and decided to go on a run. We went to the treeline at the side of the pack house and took off our shirt and basketball shorts. I took a deep breath in and relaxed letting my wolf take over. I felt my bone dislocate and rearrange as a burning sensation swept over my body. My wolf is larger than most because I’m an Alpha. My fur is black and my eyes are silver. Then my senses sharpened and I opened my eyes to look at Jaden next to me.
‘Ready to go?’ I asked Jaden.
‘Yup.’ He replied before we both took off into the forest.
‘Hey can we head to where that wolf was to try and see if we can track her scent.’
‘Sure.’ Jaden stated and we ran towards the front of the territory. When the patrol wolves saw us they bowed their heads in respect as we passed by. Once we got a little farther we picked up on a new scent I didn’t recognize.
‘That must be her.’ I told Jaden. We started following it through the woods then it stopped at a little creek. I walked over to it and peered into the cold clear water, looking at my reflection.
‘It picks back up over here.’ Jaden commented. I followed him as he walked, tracing the scent. After a few more minutes we arrived at the back of a white house. Her scent stopped just at the edge of the treeline before going into their backyard. Just as we were going to get a little closer an old lady opened the back door. We ducked behind some nearby bushes. The older lady didn’t smell like a werewolf or anything supernatural.
‘Maybe we have the wrong house.’ Jaden said. At that I used my super hearing to see if anyone was in the house and there was. I could hear their heartbeat and breathing. It was soft and steady which means that she was probably sleeping.
‘Listen…’ I responded. Jaden closed his eyes to concentrate on the sounds in the house. Once he heard it his head snapped to me and he nodded. But the older lady finally walked back inside and we decided to go back to the pack house.
