She woke suddenly, breath caught in her throat, the quiet of her bedroom pressing in on her like a warning. Her heart refused to slow, as if it knew something she didn't. The hum grew louder, vibrating against her ribcage. Mia swallowed and whispered, "This... this isn't right..." Her backpack lay where she'd left it yesterday, untouched, but she could've sworn it's strap had shifted. Every shadow seemed heavier, more solid than it should be.
