Chapter 5

Jamie woke up next to Alyson and found himself staring at her beautiful face. He beat his alarm this morning by a few minutes, but this morning he was glad. Her long, brown hair was chaotic and all over her pillow.It was sprawled out and glistening in the contrast between the dawning light and the shadows of the room. Her lips were dry but motionless and peaceful. With her curled up on her side, facing him, he got closer and brushed his fingers through her hair with a smile.

Jamie: I'm so grateful to you.Sometimes I feel like the world has turned its back on me. Through all of this, you've stuck by my side regardless of all of the stress. It takes a special kind of person to accept someone in my situation. We both know that I didn't do it and I'm paying the price anyway.

She smiled and cuddled closer. Then the alarm on her phone went off. It was time to get up and they both had to go to work. They showered together, had s*x, and then got ready. Jamie was content with this life as it was. Alyson's birthday

was coming up and he had a lot to think about. Between doing something special, getting away with it, and how he was going to make all of this look normal; he had a lot on his plate. Doing something wouldn't be an issue this early. All he really had on a regular basis to worry about was calling the ua line and doing nightly curfew phone calls. As long as those were handled, everything looked fine on that end. His saving grace was that they couldn't look through his finances. Seeing that the documents had financial information and that they were a party that collected his money, Jamie did feel that there would be legal concerns if that ever became a subject. Then again, he thought that this level of privacy invasion would be illegal too. Law enforcement having grounds to show up and search whenever they want, being on blast on the internet where someone can type your name and just see you and your charge at any point. the latter was a scary thought that haunted him a lot. especially with news reports of people literally going into the registry, going to people's homes, and killing them. Alyson tried to offer comfort to this but it still gave him this sinking feeling in his chest.

They finished getting ready and they got in the car. Jamie got in the driver seat instinctively.

Jamie: is it fine if i drop you off today and pick you up? i don't have class tonight so i should be able to get you.

Alyson: just be careful because if you get stopped things could get really ugly for us

A silence filled the car at that moment with the sinking reality that any small slip up meant that they could both lose everything. Jamie threw on some music in the background. Alyson started to sing along and Jamie started to join. These moments were Jamie's little slice of heaven in a life full of torment and hell. They pulled up to Alyson's work and she kissed him goodbye.

Alyson: i love you

Jamie: i love you too

He watched her walking away with a bittersweet feeling. So beautiful and she was his to love and care for. He was hers and every day they had each other's backs through thick and thin. After she got into work, he drove himself to work. He was the supervisor at a warehouse. The job wasn't the best morale wise but it paid enough to get the bills covered and worked with his shifty schedule. As long as he kept communication with his boss, he was okay.

He got up to his area and all the conveyor belts started up.

Jamie: i wonder how many call outs and late people I'll get today. maybe I'll be graced by the union steward telling me that I'm stealing hours when there's nothing i can do about being understaffed.

It was difficult to be screamed at all ends every single day and then when you're walking out, the boss says you're the best they have. Jamie didn't feel like the best by any means. Sometimes he questioned if being a leader was really in him. Influential would be the last word anyone would use to describe him. That really showed in his area. He cycled people through a system that was fair where some days people got harder work and then they would have days of easy work. Whenever the hierchy of seniority and age came up, that was always a difficult battle and balance. Jamie always found a way to line things up when he had the resources. The first part of the day was always the hardest. Today for example was a bad one. He had 10 workers and 3 supervisors for 30 doors. and he was told that the return slides would be full. Lucky for him, he saw that some unloaders were late too. He decided to fully staff the biggest volume area, partially staff the area with the return, put one of the supervisors on the return and float the other one to help where he was needed. As for Jamie that left 4 open unloaders and a second chute running lightly. He put one fast unloader 1 average unloader and 2 slow unloaders in one area, opened it up, and just handled the whole area. He strained hard under the speed he had to go just knowing that. After about 30 minutes of struggle, his people started showing up and he gained more and more relief until he was free to lead and focus on the return chutes.

The day wrapped up and Jamie was exhausted and messaged Alyson about his day. She told him that she was going to be off early that night and if he was going to be off in time to get her. Jamie checked with his boss and got the green light to go as long as his supervisors filled in on the wrap up for the day. usually they didn't have an issue with it so he let them know and headed out to get Alyson. When he got there she was waiting outside of her work and she looked just as exhausted as he was.

Jamie: hey babe (kissed her) you look really tired today

Alyson: likewise

Jamie: i was gonna take you out tonight but tonight's feeling more like a stay in, take out, movie kinda night.

Alyson: that sounds rad babe

Jamie: what are we eating tonight?

Alyson: don't make me decide. my brain is sick of functioning right now.

They went home and ordered a pizza cuddling close on the couch. They took swigs of a 2 liter that they shared as they watched studio ghibli. The moment was simple but beautiful. He dozed off before the movie finished.
