CHAPTER SEVEN
Alessandro's pov
Dinner with my family was better than I expected. It ended on a really good note, although my mother and I spent a few minutes arguing about whether or not we let the intruder stay. Sending her off would be over my dead body, I let him understand. I was so keen on letting her stay because my wolf instinct said so. Although I was yet to finish my research about why she left the blood moon pack or about those very strange characteristics of her eyes, one small look at her told me all I needed to know. That girl was innocent in every sphere of the word.
This morning I woke up feeling extra happy and a little lightweight. The sun was crisp and still young in the sky. Venice was usually warm during this period. The sky was clear and the birds chirped as they flew through the horizon.
The wolf district was shared many years ago, during the reign of the three Lycan emperors. Northern and southern Italy were the regions where the Lycan brothers had ruled over, while the Eastern and western regions were the parts controlled by humans. From the onset, my ancestors had been in charge of the northern region while the southern region was controlled by all the Alphas of the Blood moon pack. I checked the time on my phone and I still have a good number of minutes before I’d go to the company. My liaison was strong with the easterners as Gilberto partnered mostly with the Easterners although; there were people from both regions that partnered with us. During the reigns of our ancestors, the southerners and northerners were the closest because they shared a semblance with composition, but ever since Gilbert and I had that big fight in our High school days, there had been an unspoken war between the two regions.
I got up and decided to stroll over to the interrogation room where the wolf from last time was kept. I got there in no time and the guards led me to her.
“She’s in there,” the guard said, holding the door open for me.
“Thank you. You can wait outside” the guards nodded and I proceeded inside the cellar. I immediately spotted a small figure wrapped in a small ball on the wooden bed, beside the window. Her hair looked wet and obvious knots had formed in them, deepening the red of it, and like a shawl, it covered the whole of her back. It was a good thing her room was demented with a steel door and I wasn’t with the key or else I’d gone over to her and loose the knots in her hair.
“Hey” I called out and she immediately uncurled herself and turned. She swallowed when she saw me and my arms immediately ran over her body. I activated my wolf senses to gauge her- her blood circulation speed was slow, her breathing was shallow and sweat rolled down her body. Her pupils weren’t stagnant and they held no life. Her eyes retained a particular fear that made me question the necessity of the protocols I already had ironed out. All the answers I needed were in her eyes. She looked so fragile and I felt a need to wrap her in my arms. I shook my head and then blinked repeatedly, trying to get myself to focus. I’ve heard the warning several times, never mingle personal feelings with business.
"I didn't get your name last time," I say for a start.
"Rayne." Her reply was short, and the last shade of color drained from her eyes when I cleared my throat and adjusted on my seat.
"Hey, don't be scared, okay? And please tell me the absolute truth," I encouraged, hooking her chin with my index finger and lifting her face back up.
She nodded her head and gave a bad attempt at a smile, but I continue regardless
"Why are you here, Rayne?" I asked again when she finally braced herself to look me in the eye.
"To survive, I guess?" She said, sounding more like she was asking herself what rather than answering me.
"You have to come up with clearer terms, Rayne, if you want me to help you," I said smoothly, not breaking eye contact. Apart from the fact that I couldn't seem to pull my eyes from hers because I was spellbound to do so, I needed her to trust me, and there was no way she would do that much if she couldn’t look at me.
"Okay...” she looked at me one more time and with an assuring nod of my head, she started to talk. “After the Villain pack invaded the Crescent moon pack several months ago, Alpha Gilbert took the remnants of my pack and brought us to his pack as refugees. Things were fine until they weren't. I was mated to him and he seemed to love me just the way I was until one day, I was accused of theft...” soft sobs broke out from her. After some time she continued, although it was clear she wouldn't do for long “and because I could not clear myself, I was made an omega. After that, my already horrible life took a worse turn. I became the laughing ridiculing object of the pack. Both the Alpha and his friend did nasty and shitty things to me….." Her sobs soon turned into tiny faint and gentle cries.
I'm not even surprised today, for the least. Gilbert is one hell of a person with pride and without conscience, and Jenny, well… Jenny is another egotistical maniac—a filthy spoiled brat.
"And your parents?" I asked, but Instead of replying to me as she should, a fresh wave of tears flowed from her eye. This time she was not just bringing out sobs but full-on guttural cries. Maybe her parents were included in the sufferings she had to endure, or perhaps she didn't even know them, to begin with. "At least you might want to tell your parents of your whereabouts?"
"No," she whimpered.
"No, what? You don't want us telling your parents of your whereabouts too?" I asked her for the umpteenth time.
"My parents are dead" now she was wailing.
"Damn! I'm so sorry. I didn't know". I stretched out my arm and dropped on the back of her palm—my little attempt at trying to calm her.
"Do not apologize…"
“What do you want me to do then?”
“Listen…?” I cut her in.
"I'd like to hear your story. Tell me all of it." What the hell was talking about because that surely wasn’t me?
I crossed my arms over my chest and listened to her lament her indeed, horrible tales and experiences amidst sobs and labored breaths. All the while, while she told me her story, my blood boiled in anger. I knew Gilbert to be a shitty person, but the bad things he did to Rayne were off the charts. He must pay and I will make sure he does to the last penny.
