Jacob and I nodded slowly. Dad reached into his pocket. He tossed one set of keys to Jacob and one to me. We looked straight at each other and yelled meaninglessly. We jumped up and ran out the door. I could hear our parents laughing. I ran to the silver car, unlocked it, and jumped in. I looked up to see Jacob straight up drive off in his truck and laughed. But he was soon back, so he must have only driven around the block. Our parents stood smiling on the front porch and then I felt very somber. I had to tell them. I got out of my car and walked back to the house, Jacob not far behind. “What’s wrong, Rae?” Mom asked. “I have to tell you something,” I said, motioning inside.
