Kayad's Obsession 3.0

1204 Words
Kayad pulled a chair over and settled into it in front of his window overlooking Saige Park. He flicked a finger at his dandelion and propped his chin on his hand as he gazed out the window. *Kayad? Kayad? What do you think? Is there a problem? Are you changing plans? Kayad? * Noir jumped onto the arm of the chair as she asked before shifting around to stick her face directly in front of Kayad’s eyes. “about the teachers rigging the exams. I think that rather than a faction-based conspiracy it is more likely one person manipulating the others. Which is worse because unlike following the roots to the cause I’m left with puppets whose strings can be cut at a whim with no way to track back to the puppeteer. Though I suppose one person should have less resources than a group.” Kayad responded. He pushed Noir’s head aside and then stood up going over to the kitchenette to pour himself a drink. When he reached up to get the poison powder down Noir leapt onto the bench and grabbed his sleeve with her mouth. *Not about that, about Sorrel being different. Aren’t you obsessed with that Sorrel from your past life? * Noir tugged at Kayad’s arm and when he didn’t respond she jumped and wrapped all her legs around his arm trying to hold it in place. Kayad paid no attention to the cat hanging off his arm as he poured a small amount of powder into his fruit juice and then returned to the window. “You have known me for two lifetimes. Do you really think that I would have let him get away if I’d wanted him?” *I mean, let is an incorrect term. Circumstances outside your control stole him. * Noir shifted to sit back on the arm of the chair, her head tilted to one side as she looked at Kayad. “The war? I’m selfish and greedy if that's what I wanted I could have just changed sides. No, that one was that Kayad’s friend. I just wanted to avoid the world burning. The choices he made I wouldn’t. Even if that wasn’t the case it would be a poor showing if I couldn’t see the differences in the object of my obsession.” Kayad laughed softly as he downed half his drink. *then you noticed? When did you notice? * Noir’s front foot slipped in surprise and she tumbled down off the arm and into Kayad’s lap. “From the start. The other us encountered the problem with Alphonse as well and while I knew what would likely happen, I still wanted a search. The other just let it go, not even intending to try. While when Sorrel met Al, he knocked him out with brutal efficiency the other dodged and relied on an anaesthesia. Once subtle one brash how could they be the same person.” Kayad shook his head and chuckled at the memory. When he’d watched the fight, he’d expected to see a subtle precision that would attract Daylen’s admiration and instead it was a brutal disregard since it couldn’t hurt why spend so much effort. That seemed to be the motto that his sorrel went by. The more time passed the more obvious it became. It was that natural comfort with himself that his Sorrel had that had attracted him. The cold calculation that he had seen in the other that had appealed in what he remembered was simply not as attractive. *So, you're more attached to the new one? But then if he’s different what about the events? * Noir rolled off her back and stood on her hind legs to place her forepaws on Kayad’s chest. “Some things stay the same others change. It hardly matters unlike the other Kayad who wanted to rule as I said I’m selfish if I have what I want. I don’t care about the rest.” Kayad drained his glass and set it aside before he stroked Noir’s head. *Ah? So even though you wanted to stop the world burning now you don’t care? * Noir shook his hand off and swatted his chest with a paw to emphasise her question. “I thought stopping the flames would be interesting. Now my Sorrel is far more interesting. Just as well that my Sorrel isn’t his though after all I can’t kill a dead person for coveting my treasure.” Kayad growled softly, his eyes gleaming in the moonlight. *Is that the main point! Is it? * Noir hissed and jumped at Kayad’s face. “Don’t worry, my Sorrel likes this world so naturally won’t let it burn. If nothing else the memories of the other Kayad’s experiences are sufficient to give warnings for things to look out for. Though if Sorrel no longer likes this world then it can just burn.” Kayad grabbed Noir out of the air and stood up. He placed her down in the chair as he headed over to the computer in the back corner of the room. *What are you going to do? * Noir asked as it climbed up to the top of the backrest and looked over at him. “Just going to make sure there are no other nasty surprises for the exams. Might even grab the end year exams while I’m at it. If I can make Sorrel do targeted study, I won’t have to worry about useless things vying for his attention.” Kayad responded as he booted up the computer and proceeded to hack into the school’s network on the side, he ran scrambling magic under concealment. He was probably the only student who realised that while the midterms were decided by the teachers the end of year exams were fixed for all the schools. Once he had the main points identified Kayad left the network and erased his traces. *Wait, you're not copying down the actual exam questions? * Noir crossed over the top of the furniture to the computer desk and looked down at Kayad’s notes. “Of course not, I just need to be able to explain the topics well when Sorrel asks. That way his attention will be on me and not the book. If I just sampled the questions his studious nature would make him want to go over the chapter.” Kayad shook his head as if the answer to Noir’s question had been obvious. *it seems that this person’s illness is in the final stages and absolutely cannot be cured. * Noir muttered as she turned tail and went to the bed to lie down pointedly curling up facing away from Kayad and putting her tail over her eyes and indicated her unwillingness to continue watching.
