Chapter 11: Family Trust Issues

“We have been fighting and killing demons all of our lives. If there was a way of killing a demon by stabbing them with a knife, don’t you think Jackson and I would have already done it, you should know that!” Leo shouted angrily, thinking she was just wasting time.

“There wasn't a knife that was able to kill a demon until I made one, Leo! I have already tested it on a real demon and it works, so if you want to waste time speaking Latin rather than just stabbing it then you do that but I am not!”

“So what, instead of just Jackson being hurt or even worse you'd be dead too just because you think that you invented something?”

“I don't 'think' that I have invented anything, I know that I have. For once in your life trust me, I know what I am doing and I always have, you would have known that if you paid the tiniest bit of attention to me.”

“Oh, so you are bringing the past up again, are you? Poor you, no one paid you any attention, you were left to grieve alone, you got hurt, who cares?”

Sapphire slammed Leo against the wall. “You will start treating me part of the family like I am, Jackson wants me to hunt with you two again when we are done here and guess what? I am going to take his offer so get used to having me around you because I'll be with you both until I die now.”

“That can easily be arranged, little sister,” Leo spat out between his teeth. Sapphire let him go, not in any type of mood to argue with him anymore or even be in the same room as him. She locked the secret room, walking past Leo and Dominic as she headed to the door.

“Dominic, come on, I know a few places of where Jackson could be, I need your help,” she said and Dominic just nodded, not wanting to get on the wrong side of her, she seemed fierce, not to be messed with. Though he wondered why Leo didn’t trust her.

He turned to follow her down the stairs, straight out the door and she walked to Dominic’s car as he parked at the bottom of her drive blocking her car in, she climbed into the car slamming the door shut. Dominic got in the driver’s seat shutting the door, leaving Leo calling from the house, wanting to go with them.

“Drive!” Sapphire spoke harshly.

Dominic nodded then reversed out of the street as Leo ran out in frustration, kicking the bin when he saw he was too late.

In the car Dominic and Sapphire sat in awkward silence for a while, until Dominic finally spoke, “Don’t you think he has a right be here?”

“After the way he just reacted, no chance, he is way too emotional, and worked up to be on this case.” Sapphire explained softly.

Dominic looks at her slightly surprised at how fast she calmed down. How does she do that? She was just in total rage a second ago. “I know, Jackson is your brother too though, you sure you up for the case?”

“I know how to separate my emotions, I am very worried for him but he can take care of himself, he has probably been in this situation so many times before. He just always needed help, normally Leo but this time he has two of us, you and me.” She turns to look at him, “Don’t worry, we’ve got this.”

“How did you know I was nervous?” Dominic questioned, glancing at her, then back to the road.

“You want back up, plus it is the first time hunting demons, you would be stupid not to be nervous.” She chuckles softly, “turn right here, onto the slip road.”

“How do you know where you are going?” he asks, not understanding her tracking technique, it was a technique he had never seen before.

“By smell, he is here, somewhere, I wasn’t actually thinking of this place, I forgot about it, but I picked up his scent from the main road.” She honestly replied, which surprised herself. Why do I just tell him everything so freely? It is a massive risk.

“Picked up his scent? What do you have enhanced senses, or something?” he shook his head as he chuckled.

“Yeah, something like that.”

“Wait, what? How?”

Can I tell him? I haven’t told anyone before? She asked herself, taking a deep breath, “You were right, I am not human. Stop here, we need to get out.”

Dominic, stops the car, Sapphire gets out, taking a deep breath of the air, they were at an old factory which was basically a ruin; there was no door, just archways and walls separating each room. The place was a dump, random tables and forklifts all around the ruin.

he gets out too, “You cannot just say you’re not human then just get out the car like it’s nothing.”

“Be quiet a moment please, we will continue this convocation later.”

“Am…Am I safe to be around you?” Dominic suddenly felt very nervous around her.

Sapphire turns to look at him hurt, “Really? You did not just ask that? You are safe to be around me; I would not hurt you, Dominic. I don’t know what would have made you think that.”

Dominic feels a pang of guilt, “I don’t know, just normally things that aren’t human are bad, I mean you hunt them down.”

She chuckles slightly amused, “I hunt the evil ones down, not all supernatural creatures are evil, some cling onto humanity as much as they can, you just happened to work in the field of which humanity is ripped away from the human, not giving them a chance. The only way I survived it because of what I am.”

“And…what are you?” he let the curiosity get the better of him.

Sapphire turned to look at him, “I don’t know who is around nor do I know who is listening, I am not going to tell you here. Now, come on, and if you see a demon don’t let it touch you, it will teleport you anywhere it wants.”

Dominic jogs to catch up to her, “So, how are we going to do this?”

She walks towards the factory. “Well, since they took Jackson and didn’t kill him on scene means they want something from him. It can be many reasons behind why they want to talk to him, so we are going to search this area, you are going along the right hand side and I will go along the right, check the perimeter first before heading inside.”

He nodded, “Roger that.” He smirks a little then walks towards the right hand side of the ruin.

He walked slowly alone the side of it, stopping before each gap section to look through, then checks behind him, he felt like someone was watching him and it sent a shiver down his spine. Why the creepy places? Why is it never anywhere nice? He thought as walked to the next opening of the building, he looks through, then he jumps out his skin as a bird squawks and flaps around him before flying away. “Holy mother of god.” He rests his hand on the ruin, with the other hand on his chest breathing heavy.

Sapphire was suddenly behind him, resting a hand on his shoulder, “Are you alright? What happened?”

He quickly spins around, “Where did you come from? I didn’t even hear you!”

She let her hand drop and took a step back, “Sorry, I heard you and I came to make sure you were ok. Anyways the perimeter is secure, let’s just go inside.”

Sapphire pulled two knives out, one for each hand and Dominic having the knife Sapphire gave him in his hand, swirling it in his hand from nerves. Sapphire jumped over the ruin wall and looked around, she heads left, into room with high ceilings, and was long and wide. Dominic was following close behind, keeping an eye behind them. There was junk all over the room, cabinets and cupboards, oil tanks, cranes the works. Sapphire looked behind her signalling Dominic to go right, she went left, her knives ready, she walked silently in a diagonal at first, checking every little sections.

She hears Dominic’s, “Clear.” She turned to look at him and nods.

She cautiously walked through to the next room, she breaths the air in deeply, “There is something here so watch out, Jackson isn’t here though so I think this one is a trap.”

Dominic looks at her and nods, “Are your senses telling you that?” he asked partly jokingly, because he thought she was joking about it all. There was no way that someone so down to earth and caring and beautiful could be one of these monsters that we are hunting. She is just perfect in any way, I mean I don’t know if demons are smart or not, I never faced one but if she was one of them I am sure I would know. Right? I mean if I didn’t know then Jackson and Leo would know. Maybe that is why Leo hates her so much, I mean maybe he has her suspicions about her?

“…in there? Hello? Now is not the time to zone out.” Sapphire was saying to him.

Dominic shook his thoughts away, “Sorry what were you saying?”

“I was saying, yes I smell a demon or two nearby but I cannot yell how many there are, I can just smell them, and hear them for that matter.” Sapphire explains quietly, “So go cautiously.” She concluded, before walking around the corner, her knives at the ready, the blades of her knife facing outwards ready to slice anything that came near her.

Dominic began following her, he guarded behind them so nothing would surprise them from behind. This is what their family does for a living? This is just creepy.

Sapphire swiftly moved around the corner into a room that had walls but no roof, “Guard the door a minute, I sense something.” She looked back to see if Dominic was listening, she got a nod to say he was indeed listening.

Sapphire walked to the middle of the room and closed her eyes, she takes a deep breath of the air, she could smell each of the elements of air individually, nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide, neon, methane, helium and the few others. She all of a sudden got a strong smell of sulphur. Her eyes flew open. “Come out, come out wherever you are.”

Two demons appear in front of her. “So you are the one? What just because you can sense us here? That is what is meant to make you so special? I mean your partner there could have done that.”

Sapphire shook her head, as they were total oblivious of what she was, “Yeah, I know Dominic could have. Now where is my brother.”

The demon chuckles, “Wouldn’t you like to know huh? He could be anywhere by now, France maybe Canada, oh wait no…New Zealand.”

Sapphire grits her teeth, “I know he is here, if he isn’t in this ruin then he is further into the woods, I thought I’d check here, but since there are two of you then I am hot on the trail.”

The chuckles abruptly came to a stop, they tilted their head. “Mmm maybe you are something, I am glad it is us that will be bringing you two my king.”

It was Sapphire’s turn to laugh, “I would like to see you try.”

One of the demons pulls a dagger out, Sapphire takes a step back to give them space between, keeping both of her blades high up.

The demon tries to use his physic power to move the floor to grab their feet them both, Dominic looks down at his feet to see the floor melting then instantly going back solid What the hell is this? Must be an illusion or something, it just has to be he tried to take a step forward instead he loses his balance a bit, but he finally steadies himself, he looked at Sapphire’s feet but nothing moves around her she even took a step forward in a taunting manor.

“Is that all that you have? That old trick?” She chuckles. She runs and jumps one foot hitting the wall as she flips over the demons’ head, she kicks the demon in the back of the head with such power that it forces him of his feet to his knees, she lands in front of him, with her back to him, she swiftly plunges her blade into his neck, he falls to the ground disappearing as he does, just leaving his guts and some dust to represent his power. “So he doesn’t look very powerful by how much dust there is remaining, so how powerful are you? Do you want to risk your life or just tell me where the hell my brother is?”

The demon looks back at her stunned at what just happened, “How…how did you do that…w-with such ease?”

“You underestimate me demon, you demons always have and you always will underestimate just what I am but the human race too, my brothers have been wiping you out so easily like you are a bug squished against the window.” Sapphire taunted him, grinning as she does.

“A demon never backs down in a fight, no matter who or what it is.” The demon says, trying to use his special ability on its challenger, though there was no effect what so ever, though his challenger could feel his power growing.

“Trying to use your power? I can feel it in the air, it makes the hair on my arms stand up, then it gives me the chills and a little migraine, which means your power effects the mind, I’d say put too put pressure on the brain so it pretty much explodes in the skull. Yes?”

The demon tries to use his full potential when it comes to his power, then he gives up. “What are you?

Sapphire looks at Dominic, then looks the demon in the eyes “Release him, then tell me where my brother is.”

“I won’t tell you where your brother is but I will release your boyfriend.” The demon clicked his fingers and Dominic was realised, he instantly takes a few steps back stunned still.

“Now where is my brother?” Sapphire questioned again impatiently.

“That I will not help you with.” The demon spoke then vanishing into thin air.

“Damn it!” Sapphire shouted angrily and kicked the wall, which crumbled from the impact. Sapphire moved and so did Dominic. “Wow, you must be strong for it to have that sort of impact.”

Sapphire looked at him. “It's an old ruin, it wouldn't take much for this to crumble. Come on, he isn't here, we need to find him. I don't want him to be hurt, we could already be too late for that. As long as when we get there he isn't dead. I will be able to deal with it then.”

“Jackson will be OK, you know, he is strong, he will figure out a way to delay them trying to kill him. How don’t you know that they took him for a trap?”

“If it was for a trap it would have been for Leo, not me; most demons don't even know about me, only one that is still alive that does. Well, was alive, I don't know if they killed her or not. Let’s carry on, we need to find him as fast as we can. I am not taking chances.” She headed back to the car and got in, Dominic getting in as well. They continued along the same road; deeper into the wood.
