Prologue
Prologue: A Chance Encounter The small restaurant buzzed with life, the harsh sounds of talk and clinking cups. Sarah Mitchell sat in a corner, her laptop open but mostly ignored. The nice smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, but she was too distracted to appreciate it. Her heart raced as she prepared to face the man who had once meant everything to her--Nathaniel Chase. "Are you sure you want to do this?" Mark, her fellow worker, slid into the seat across from her, concern etched on his face. "I have to," she replied, her voice steady even though there is the existence of the storm brewing inside her. "This interview could change everything for me." "Just remember, Nathaniel isn't the same guy you used to know. He's a billionaire now, and they don't get to that position without making enemies." "Enemies or not, I need to hear his side of the story." She quickly looked at her watch, fear and stress-related chewing at her. "He's late." Mark leaned back, crossing his arms. "Maybe he's thinking about it again. This isn't just a business interview; there's a history there.” Her stomach twisted. She had spent years hiding a secret that could shatter Nathaniel's world. Lily, her daughter, was the reason she had kept her distance. Would he even want to hear that he was a father? Just then, the door swung open, and a gust of cold air swept through the small restaurant. Nathaniel stepped in, a tall figure covered in a custom-designed suit, showing the kind of confidence that turned heads. His blue eyes scanned the room, locking onto hers, and for a moment, the noise faded away. "Sarah." His voice was deep, stirring up interest in unspoken memories. "Hi, Nathaniel." She stood, her heart pounding. He approached, his look piercing. "It's been a while." "Too long," she managed, her pulse racing as memories flooded back. Their laughter, their dreams--everything came rushing in. "Shall we?" He pointed toward the booth, and she nodded, her feelings of love, hate, fear, etc. a twisting and flowing mess. As they settled in, the air was thick with tension. "How have you been?" he asked, leaning (a) little forward, real interest flickering in his eyes. "I've been... busy," she replied, avoiding his look. "You know how it is." "Busy with work? Or busy with life?" His tone was teasing, but there was an edge of seriousness. "Both, I guess." She took a deep breath, steeling herself. "I'm here to talk about your recent trips. There's a lot of tension in the air surrounding your company." Nathaniel's expression shifted, a shadow passing over his features. "Tension is a statement (that says that something is much less than it actually is). You know how the media love to spin things."w "At what cost, Nathaniel?" she pressed, her voice firm. "People are talking about a possible (shameful and disgraceful act or situation). You need to address it before it spirals out of control." "I'm not here to be closely examined by you, Sarah." His tone sharpened, and she felt the weight of his words. "Then what are you here for?" she challenged, her heart racing. "Is it just to think about the past?" He leaned back, crossing his arms. "I'm here to protect my company, not to revisit old wounds.” "Old wounds?" she echoed, her frustration boiling over. "You think they are just old wounds? You walked away without a word, Nathaniel. I had to pick up the pieces." His look hardened, and for a moment, the air crackled between them. "You think I wanted to leave you?" "Then why did you?" she shot back, her voice rising. "You chose your empire over us!" Before he could respond, a loud crash from the entrance surprised them both. A group of reporters had burst in, shouting questions and pushing for Nathaniel's attention. "Mr. Chase! What about the legal accusations?" one shouted. Nathaniel's expression turned cold as he stood, tension radiating from him. "We're done here," he said, his eyes narrowing at the invasion. "Wait--" Sarah called out, but he was already moving away, swallowed by the noise and confusion. As she watched him disappear into the crowd, her heart sank. She had come here to angrily stand up to him, to tell the truth about Lily, but now she was left with the crushing silence of unresolved feelings. Then her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, her heart racing as she read the message: “They're onto you. You need to leave now.” Panic suddenly rushed through her. Who was onto her? And what did they know? As the room spun with unanswered questions, she understood she had entered a dangerous game, one that could shatter everything she held dear.
