There’s a long silence until Kason starts speaking. A painful smile forms on Kason’s lips as he thinks of his sister Haley.
"I don't want revenge and I don't want to kill the person who killed my sister. Revenge and murder aren't the way I roll. I want to track down the werewolf who killed my sister and demand that they apologize. Not to me, but to the grave of my sister. The only thing I want from them is an apology." says Kason as he turns to Elias.
Elias smiles back.
"You were testing me, weren't you?" asks Kason, confident in his answer.
"Yes. It's hard for us vampires to trust people, especially our kind. I had to test you to see if you were trustworthy," replies Elias.
"Fair enough," Kason replied.
"I think you'll do fine as a vampire," Elias says, sitting down at his desk.
"You think so?" asked Kason.
"Yes. But you'll need to train if you ever hope to stand a chance against William Vaughan and his followers," says Elias, stating the facts.
"We already have that covered," Kason says with a proud smile.
"Wait, we do?" Miguel asks in surprise.
"Jayden gave me some helpful advice. A renegade Breaker lives just on the edge of the Grand Canyon. He protects the surrounding towns. He owes Jayden a favor. So he'll help us train if we tell him Jayden sent us." Kason says.
“Whoa! Hang on just a moment. What the hell is a Breaker?” Miguel asks as he tries to understand what that term means.
Kason sighs in exasperation because Miguel can’t comprehend what a Breaker is even though he was going to explain it anyway.
“I wasn’t finished explaining, you i***t. Jayden said that a Breaker is a higher version of a hunter. They have a deeper understanding of the supernatural and connection with their chosen hunter partners.” Kason explains.
“I see. It still doesn’t make sense, but I’ll go with what you just told me,” Miguel replies.
"Well, that settles the issue of who will train you," Elias says.
"Well, we should get back to class. I don't want to get behind in our studies." Miguel says as he sits up in bed.
"Are you sure you should get up?" Kason asks with concern in his voice.
"I'm fine, Kason. There's nothing to worry about. My strength is already back. After all, I am a member of the basketball team. I'm supposed to be strong." Miguel says to reassure Kason.
"I'll write you two some exemption notes for your teachers. That way, they won't suspect you two weren't skipping class." Elias says as he starts writing notes for Kason and Miguel to give to their teachers.
Once Elias is done writing the two notes, he hands them to Miguel and Kason. Miguel gets up from the bed and walks to class with Kason. The rest of the day goes by and Sabrina sees Kason and Miguel waiting for her outside the school building once school is over.
"Miguel, Kason, what are you doing here?" asks Sabrina in confusion.
"We were waiting for you. We wanted to walk you home. Besides, we wanted to tell you what we discussed with Elias." Miguel says with a reassuring smile.
"I see," Sabrina says as she starts walking away. Miguel and Kason walk next to her.
Sabrina and her friends silently walk in the school hallway until they exit the building. Kason breaks the silence by speaking first.
"Jayden suggested someone who could train us for the upcoming battles against William Vaughan. The person Jayden spoke of is a renegade Breaker who protects the towns surrounding the Grand Canyon. He owes Jayden a favor. He's not very fond of people, though. Especially vampires. So don't expect a warm welcome from him." Kason says as he pushes his hair back from his eyes.
“Wait! What? We’re going to fight against the person who’s after my life?” Sabrina asks in disbelief.
“Yes. We are going to fight against William Vaughan. I know it seems impossible and hopeless right now, but you’ve got to believe you’ll get through this hopeless situation. I'll fight alongside you and Miguel. The same goes for Miguel. We both want to protect you. So, please, let’s fight against William Vaughan and defeat him.” replies Kason as he tries to convince Sabrina to fight alongside him and Miguel.
There’s another long silence before Sabrina starts talking again.
"Jayden said that we can fight against his Master?" Sabrina asks as she sadly looks at Kason.
"Yes. He did. I know that Jayden is the last person you want to talk about right now, but just know that he still cares about you," says Kason as he puts his hand on Sabrina's shoulder.
"Then why is Jayden pushing me away? I just found him again, and he told me to stay away from him." Sabrina says as she starts to raise her voice.
"I can't answer that question. You'll have to figure out that answer for yourself. But for right now, just focus on becoming stronger." says Kason with a smile.
Kason takes his hand off Sabrina's shoulder and continues walking beside her. Sabrina, Kason, and Miguel walk in silence until they reach Sabrina's home on the other side of the hill. As they walk up to Sabrina's house, Sabrina can smell her favorite warlock's scent. But she gulps in fear and turns around. She knows that Brett will use his favorite spell to make her start floating in the air. Miguel and Kason are confused as to why Sabrina is turning around. Sabrina is sent flying into the air before they can ask why she's turning around.
"Sabrina!" Kason and Miguel call out in unison.
Kason and Miguel run to her but she becomes angry.
"Come on, put me down! Brett Angelo McCarthy, if I get my hands on you, you'll be in a world of hurt. Put me the hell down, Brett! I mean it!" Sabrina shouts angrily.
Kason and Miguel look at each other in confusion once again. Suddenly, all three of them hear laughing in the distance. Sabrina falls onto the ground and lands on her butt. The landing wasn’t a soft one, either.
"Ow! That hurt you damn warlock!" says Sabrina shouting out in anger.
On the porch of Sabrina's house, a young warlock is standing there laughing. Sabrina stands up from the ground and glares at Brett. Kason and Miguel finally understand what's going on. The warlock that Sabrina had told them about was standing on the porch. That's why Sabrina turned around and started walking away. Brett walks up to Sabrina with a massive grin on his face.
"Are you surprised to see me?" Brett asks teasingly.
"What are you doing here, Brett? I thought you were in Maine investigating unexplained strange animal killings." Sabrina asks, still glaring at Brett.
"I finished up my investigation. It turns out that it was a newborn vampire drinking the blood of animals. I just happen to know a detective who is looking after the vampire. So I came here to check up on you." Brett says.
Brett looks at the two boys standing there next to Sabrina and senses that one of them is a newborn vampire.
"Why is there a newborn vampire here? You know how dangerous they are," asks Brett, his smile fading.
"Brett, don't hurt Kason. It's my fault that Kason is a vampire. So, don't be mad at him." Sabrina says, trying to stop Brett from hurting Kason.
Kason sighs in exasperation and lightly hits the back of Sabrina's head again.
"For the last time, it's not your fault for turning me into a vampire. I chose to become a vampire of my own free will." Kason says.
Sabrina looks at Brett with tears in her eyes. Brett’s expression softens.
"Please don't cry. You know I don't like seeing you cry," says Brett.
