Prologue
“Good Afternoon Mr. Poloski, I am Mrs. Allen and I am your court appointed therapist. What we say in here is confidential however there may be times when I have to break that confidentiality. Those terms are highlighted on page 3 of your welcome packet. I just wanted to highlight verbally that by signing this paper, you understand that you are mandated to attend 60 days of in-house treatment for your heroin addiction and if at any time I think you have somehow snuck any drugs into the Wingfield Rehabilitation Facility, I am mandated to report you. If there is indeed evidence and proof that you are using again, I am mandated to report that information to your parole officer Mr. Baker.”
-Young thin man with dark brown hair and hazy blue eyes, glazed over, looked into Mrs. Marie Allen’s eyes, and nods his head as whispers, yes. His disposition: hunched over as if he were sick and ready to vomit, his eyes were glossed over as he stared aimlessly into nowhere, his body shook and was trembling without any control as he rocked himself back and forth, and his body looked like full skeleton with a thin and fragile layer of skin barely covering the bone. This young man, only twenty years old, looked like could fall over and die at any moment.
“Alright Mr. Poloski, you are going to be in room 301 where you will go through the detoxing process. It will not be easy, but you will get through it. We have a wonderful team of nurses and a great doctor that will make sure you are okay through it. When you are ready, we can start talking.”
-Mrs. Allen gets up and escorts Mr. Poloski down the long hall to the medical staff.
(2 days earlier):
“911…what’s your emergency?”
Female voice: “Yes, I am in the Ridgewood shopping center off of Cordova Ave in west Pentatonix, Arizona. There is a man who is hunched over in his car and he is not responding to me pounding on the window.”
911 dispatcher: “Ma’am, is there anyway you can check if he has a pulse?”
Female Voice: “No, the car is locked.”
911 dispatcher: “We have sent help. Is the car running?”
Female Voice: “Yes, the car is running.”
- Crews arrive on the scene and break into the car, pulling a young man lifeless body onto a stretched. The EMT pulls out a can of nar-can and within minutes, the young man is starting to wake up. They load him into the back to the ambulance and take him to the hospital.
- Once at the hospital, they identify the young man as 20-year-old Nathan Poloski, originally from Pittsburgh, PA.
- Nathan wakes up and is instructed that he just had an overdose and almost died. This is his third overdose in 2 months. Following his being transported to the hospital, the police on the scene looked through his car and found a handful of used syringes along with a baggie of heroin and he is currently under arrest for possession of narcotics.
- Nathan goes to jail and seen by the court within a few hours. The judge rules that he is to complete 2 months of rehab, followed by 20 NA meetings, and a heartfelt message from the judge about his young age and having a bright future ahead of him.
- Upon his entry into the rehab program, as he is withdrawing, he writes that his goal is to "get the f**k out of here so I can get high again". He also stated that his expectations of the program are little to none as he came from nothing and will always remain nothing.
