DAMIAN'S POV
I stared at this strange, little girl with peak disbelief.
"Mate, mine," Alex, my wolf, called out, filled with so much desire.
This had to be the joke of the millennium. Not only was she little and frail, she was a human!
Humans can never be mated to werewolves, and certainly not a werewolf of my kind.
She lost consciousness after screaming at a frequency unable to be heard.
I brought her back to the pack house, hoping that the wise men of the pack would explain the mystery of being fated to a human.
'Surely this was a mix-up,' I thought, too afraid to call it a mistake by the moon goddess. We were raised to believe in her supreme power and all-knowing nature, she couldn't make mistakes.

I watched her eat and couldn't help burning with desire. Alex was so sure she was his mate. My desire was laced with anger and confusion.
I needed quick answers. Lucien came to get me and she was gone by the time I returned.
I morphed into my wolf and searched every nook and cranny of the forest.
Alex was the only one who could find her since he showed an obvious connection to her.
I got to the middle of the forest, said to hold peak sacredness, where Margaret had her tied up.
I changed fully into my wolf and launched an attack on Margaret. All of her spells and potions were useless against a werewolf of my kind.
I grabbed her at her right side, knowing that the strength of witches and their lives was buried at their right side. My father had spent years grounding me against the witches, just before his demise.
"Please don't take my life," frail Margaret pleaded, "I am the very last of my kind,"
I stared at her with bloodshot eyes, desiring to unleash judgment on her, but just then my eyes caught Artemis, weak and unconscious, gradually losing her hold on life.
"Leave!" I ordered Margaret, "Don't ever return," I stared deep into her eyes, "The day you dare, would be the last day your feet thread this soil, or any soil,"
I flung her across my face and ran for Artemis. I tore all the ropes with my claws and ran at peak speed, back to the pack house, with Artemis in my hands.
"Damian, what are you doing?" Lucien scolded me as soon as I arrived at the pack house.
I ran past him, hurrying to my chambers and he immediately followed behind me.
"Solving mysteries," I answered,
"She's a human!" He shouted.
"But if she's my mate, I need to know why, and I can't afford to lose her like I did your sister," I said in an outburst.
I could see Lucien's eyes immediately grow sad as soon as I mentioned his sister, my Luna, before her untimely and unfortunate demise. He walked out angrily, slamming the door behind him.
I tried healing Artemis but she was almost unresponsive, her healing rate was as slow as that of a human, or even worse.
"You have to be kidding," I expressed my frustration, walking into my chambers on the third day and seeing her still lying there, almost lifeless.
"Bury her," Lucien said,
"She still has a pulse," for some reason, I was defensive and very protective of her, even though I didn't know her.
I walked out, leaving the door hanging.
"Where are you going?" Lucien questioned,
"To have a word with Margaret,"
Lucien followed behind me and we toured the woods in search of Margaret, the witch. For days we searched and found no trace of her until finally we got to the pine boundaries. We paused a short distance away.
"This is it," Lucien said, "she followed your orders to never return," he added.
I kept staring beyond the pines. I had to find Margaret, I had lots of questions.
'What did she do to Artemis?' More than that, 'Who was she?' and 'How could she be my mate?'
Margaret was a hundred-and-twenty-five-year-old witch, although she looked far younger than that. I should have thought about holding her captive on that night, rather than chasing her away.
I had also overheard Artemis call her mother, before my arrival. If anyone held the answers I needed, it was Margaret.
I took a few steps towards the pines.
"You wouldn't dare," Lucien held me by the arm.
I paused and my heart slightly sunk at his refusal. Lucien was my Beta and I heeded his words, I never fought his judgments, I respected him first as my Luna's brother and then as the Beta of this great pack.
I didn't take another step towards the pines.
"Damian," Lucien called very strongly.
I took a deep breath and turned around.
'He was right,' walking into the human community was a dumb thing to do.
Since their last raiding that claimed lives, and our similar retaliation, we had agreed that the gods protect us all provided we remained within our boundaries on our respective sides of the pines.
Lucien and I returned to the pack house, I felt greatly defeated. I proposed in my heart to set Artemis on fire.
'The moon goddess couldn't have fated me to a human that grew under the care of the worst enemy to this pack, a witch,'
'Alex was just being delusional.'
We arrived late and retired to bed. We had been on a journey for five days and a hot bath and proper rest were in order.
Early the next morning, I stared at Artemis' almost lifeless body and sighed. I made for the shower and asked the guards to prepare the woods to light her up.
I threw down the body lotion in my hands when upon exit from the bathroom, I found her sitting upright in bed and staring right at me.
'She's awake!' Alex leaped for joy inside me. I just stared at her, awestruck, as she stared right back at me.
