Chapter 4

850 Words
Ara found out through her own investigations that the men who had murdered Wyatt's parents and hers were hunters, on orders by Gerard's protege Monroe to kill any creature who wasn't human that they came across. She didn't care how old they were. For two years Ara and Wyatt had been on the run. She had learned early on that the hunters could track them when she used her bank and credit cards so Ara had taken all of her money out of the bank and transferred it to an untraceable account offshore. She also had her parents' money, as it had passed to her upon their death. Every few months, Ara and Wyatt would move to a different place. When she'd first healed Wyatt, Ara had no idea that using her blood to speed up his healing would affect him because vampires and werewolves hadn’t been in contact with one another for centuries and never in a friendly capacity but her blood seemed to bond with him on a genetic level, making him faster, stronger. Now, his yellow wolf eyes had a ring of silver around them. One night while out getting fresh blood, Ara had heard whispered rumors that Jackson and Ethan from Scott's pack were out searching for others, trying to protect them from Monroe and so she decided that Wyatt's best bet was to be with Scott. When she got home she packed their blood in some ice and smiled at Wyatt. The little boy was mature beyond his years." Hey kid, I have some news. Some of Scott's pack is in the city and we are going to find them" she said. Wyatt perked up at the mention of Scott McCall, the true alpha. Just as they were finished packing the one bag they carried, there was banging on the door and the clicking of a gun being prepared to fire. " s**t, we've been here for too long, they found us" she said quietly. She scooped Wyatt up into her arms and jumped from the closed window. The glass pierced her body and face as she shielded Wyatt and landed on her feet ten stories below. She placed him on his feet and shook her head to clear it. Some of the glass had cut her pretty deep and she was bleeding out. Once she got her bearings, she grabbed his hand and they ran. They dodged down alleys and scaled buildings trying to lose the hunters but it wasn't working. Ara was losing a lot of blood and that blood was leading the hunters right to them.       In a last ditch effort, Ara and Wyatt ducked into an abandoned building. She let go of Wyatt's hand and urged him to hide." Go kid, run, go find Scott's pack" she whispered breathlessly. Wyatt shook his head." No mom, I won't leave you" he said shaking his head. Ara touched his face gently." My blood is everywhere kid. If I go with you, they will find us. I will try to buy you some time" she said, tears in her eyes. Ara had come to love Wyatt like her own in the two years they'd been together and he had called her mom for most of that time. She could hear footsteps getting closer to them and she stood shakily, thrusting Wyatt behind her. A group of six hunters stepped from behind the falling plastic smirking." Well, what do we have here?" one asked as he eyed Ara up and down. Ara released her claws and crouched in a defensive position despite the pain she was in. She was not going to let these assholes anywhere near Wyatt. One of the guys raised his gun and fired a round of lead bullets into Ara's body. She grunted with each impact but didn't go down. The guy frowned." What the hell those bullets are laced with yellow wolfsbane!" he said and cursed. Ara chuckled darkly, " I'm not a wolf dumbass" she growled. Just as she was about to throw herself at the hunters, there was a scuffle and screams. One by one the hunters disappeared and where they once were, four sets of glowing eyes appeared. Three were wolves and one was a Kanima. Ara sobbed with relief right before she collapsed. The four rushed over but Wyatt, who had moved to her side, snarled at them. Derek smiled at the kid. " relax kid, we're wolves like you and your mom," he said. Wyatt relaxed after a while and let them closer. " I am not a wolf" Ara said and she looked at them, her mercury silver eyes peering into two sets of glowing yellows, a set of blues and Jackson's lizard eyes. Derek frowned. He'd never seen anyone with silver eyes before and not for the first time wished that his mother was still with them. Very gently, Liam picked up Ara, while Ethan took Wyatt's hand. With the knowledge that at least Wyatt was safe, Ara lost her grip on reality and let the darkness take her. Finally Wyatt would be safe.
