Anyone that heard the name Maria Levine knew it meant trouble and as I pedalled my bike as fast as I could with my best friend yelling for me behind me, I knew I was about to manifest another disaster and so my lips pulled up in a smirk, proud of myself as usual. "Maria, f**k it, forget about it please." She cried when she caught up with me. Like me, Ona Brown was five feet two with a slim build. She was much paler than me and had short blonde hair, obsidian eyes and the most perfect pink lips. The only thing pretty about me was my attitude, and everyone hated it. "I'm not going to forget it, you know there's no convincing me to," my eyes stayed on the road as my long brunette hair got in the way, "anyone that messes with my best friend has messed with me, now let me go." I scoffed at her, my adrenaline pumping super fast. I loved it when I was able to show someone what I was made of. "I'm so sorry!" Ona yelled at a woman who was cussing at me when the wheels of my bicycle had splashed roadside water all over her. "Maria, you have to stop!" She chanted for the umpteenth time, "don't make me regret telling you about this," she groaned, breathing heavily from how fast she was pedalling just to catch up with me. I stopped my bike across the road from the donation home and so did she. I hopped off my bicycle, causing it to drop to the ground with an impact. The thing was old anyway so I cared less if it got broken or not. As I looked at both sides of the road before crossing, Ona caught up with me and pulled my arm back, "Maria for the love of God let it go, please!" "Is that his car?" I looked across the road at a huge black Range Rover parked in front of an orphanage, one I hated so much. That was where my birth parents had abandoned me until my now grandmother took me in as her own, raising me for nineteen years without help from anyone. "Yes it is but-" She started her response out. "Say no more," I jerked my arm free from her grip and crossed the road after disregarding the oncoming bus that could have hit me if I was one second slower. I looked over my shoulder in time to catch that Ona had thrown her hands over her mouth in shock before resuming my focus on where I was headed. I leaned against the tinted windows with my face and hands, trying to figure out if there was anyone in it but it was empty, "dang it." I kicked the side of the car. I needed to give that bastard a piece of my mind. "Maria, no!" I heard Ona yell from the other side, still unable to cross the road to meet me because of the active movement of vehicles between us. I looked around me for the nearest sharp object I could find and picked up a stone. Passerbys stared at me like I was crazy but they carried on with their business, just like was the usual here in East Harlem. East Harlem was for the average and poor in Manhattan. With the stone in my hand, I crouched to scribble on the side of the car, 'f**k you, yours sincerely, Mar-' I was going to write my name when I heard cheering sounds accompanied by a lot of official-looking people in suits and nun outfits heading in my direction. The clapping stopped and gasps followed as they all looked at me. I quickly jerked to my feet, throwing the stone to the floor and trying to cross the road once more. "Hey get back here!" A deep voice bellowed at me, running to my side. He was in a black suit and had a white shirt within. I couldn't make his face out just because he had sunglasses on. Before he caught up with me, I crossed the road without waiting for the coast to be clear, attracting loud disapproving honks from the cars that had to hit their brakes on impulse. When I joined Ona on the other side, I saw the man was actively waiting for the coast to be clear to catch up with me. For a second, my eyes flickered to the other man that was standing with the nuns and very confused orphans. He stood still in his navy blue suit, his eyes not leaving mine for a second. "Shıt, bıtch, you've really done it this time, what do we do now?" Ona panicked, aggressively pulling my arm. "Pedal, bıtch, pedal!" I screamed because the man that was coming after me, had managed to cross the road as the coast was now clear due to the traffic lights going red. The only reason I'd been here was because Ona had fan girled over a famous guy she'd seen on her way to the bookstore, he was here to give some donations to the orphanage for a charity program and she was only going to say hi to him when she'd been treated like trash and dragged away from the sight. I just wanted to give him a piece of my mind because no one messed with my best friends and now I might have as well as just written us a death warrant. I picked up my bicycle laying helplessly on the floor, running as I set it in motion before hopping on it and pedalling as fast as possible, I tried to keep Ona by my side because she was not as fast as I was. When I looked over my shoulders, I saw this man had yanked a bike from a child and was pedalling after us. "No f**kıng way, you have to be kidding me." I groaned, increasing my speed.
