So, everything good with the boo," Kim says as I enter the apartment.
"Yes," I said grinning from ear to ear.
"Good, let's go out and have some fun," she said as she yanked me to her room.
"Seriously, I am super tired," I told her.
"Nope, we are running out of time to hang. Soon we will have finals and then graduation," she said.
"FINE!" I shouted. She ran to the bathroom and I headed to my room. I hung up the dress Ben had given me on my closet door. After Kim got out of the shower, I headed to take a shower myself. I got out and grabbed my leather tight leggings and a red crop top. I flat ironed my already straight hair, just to make sure it was perfect. I grabbed some heels and my red matte lipstick. I went out and saw Melody and Kim already waiting for me.
"DAMN GIRL," Kim said.
"You look good too, stop," I told her. We took a shot for good luck and headed out. I texted Ben and told him I was going out. He seemed a bit worried but told me to be careful and have fun.
The club was loud and packed. Kim took me to the dance floor and I grabbed Melody. We all started to dance together. We were having fun and everything was good. When a song we really loved would come on we would sing along like we were in a concert. I assumed we looked crazy but we didn't care. We looked hot and were unbothered by the people around us. I went over to the bar to get us some drinks. The bartender came over to me fairly quickly. I think it was the top but he said it was my smile. I looked around and then noticed Liam walking towards me.
"f**k," I thought. It was too late to run away and he would just come up to me when I was with the girls.
"Hey," he said, "Long time no see."
"Wasn't that long ago," I said.
"Come on don't be like that," Liam said. "We have been friends forever."
"Liam, I know what happened wasn't your fault but I don't know how to be friends with you," I said, "Or if I still can be."
"Why, because of him," Liam snapped. "He won't let you."
"It's not like that. I just can't," I said. "It's hard."
"Look, he is a nice guy and a cool boss I bet but I am your friend," he said. "I know you better than anyone."
"You think you do," I smirked. "Look, I want to be a good girlfriend and you complicate things."
"Girlfriend?" Liam questioned. "Really."
"Yes," I said softly.
"It's funny, Mr. Richards is like super-rich but," he began to say.
"But what?" I said aggressively. "You don't think I'm good enough or he could like someone like me."
"No, I was going to say, he is super-rich and could have had Lily babysat by the top babysitters or in a headstart program but he chose you, a regular college girl," he finished explaining. I had no words.
"Ms. Winters told me, he had plenty of choices and the money of course," he said. "She even said it maybe had something to do with the fact that you look so much like his dead wife."
And with those words, my heart snapped. I had never seen a picture of her and never thought to ask him about her. Should I now? Does she really look like me? I couldn't breathe.
"Sky, you okay," Liam asked.
"Yeah, I just need a drink," I said. Liam handed me my drink and I gulped it down. In my head, all I thought was " Liam was right." Ben could have anyone, someone better and more experienced watching Lily. I started to think about the day I interviewed for the position. I was so nervous. I heard about the position from Liam. He had worked already been working for Ms. Winters. He got the job because his mother recommended him. Apparently, his mother and Ms. WInters were friends. "DAMN IT," I thought to myself. I continued to think about that day as I sat there and drank. Liam never left my side.
That day, Ben had asked me some slightly personal questions and how far I lived. He was super nice but I had no experience and it's not like Ms. Winters had spoken on my behalf, no one did. "Did he really just give me the job because I looked like his dead wife?" I thought. He stared at me but it never felt unusual or creepy. I just sat at the bar drinking until Melody and Kim came looking for me.
"Are you okay, Sky," Kim said. I didn't answer her. My thoughts were busy trying to figure out my life.
"Let's go," Melody said as she grabbed my arm. She lifted me up off the stool and walked me over to the exit.
"I'm sorry Sky," Liam said in the distance. I wasn't upset with Liam but I was just angry at everything at this point. Melody and Kim took me home. Melody made us some burgers and we ate until 4 am. I decided to go to sleep after that. In my dreams, I could just picture a happy Ben and his beautiful wife playing with Lily at the park. Did Ben hire me by choice or by chance? Did he know what he was doing a long or did he just want someone nice and normal to watch his little girl? I guess I really didn't know much about Ben and now I was back to square one. How can I be in a relationship with someone I don't really know. Liam was right he knew more about me than anyone. Did Ben really even know me? I woke up and realized I had only been asleep for thirty minutes. I got up and went to wash my face and put on some pjs. I took my phone out of my purse and looked at my messages.
Ben
I have fallen in love with you Sky and I am never letting you go.
At the time, I thought this was sweet and it did help me fall asleep but I should have known that my life was never this simple and it really was something I could never have imagined.
