Small Talk

1053 Words
There were many times I could feel Ms. Winter's eyes on me. I would make eye contact with her and it would be like looking at a disapproving mother. It didn't help that Ben would kiss me every five minutes. He held my hand and my waist when we walked. He hardly left me alone. "I just want to take you home already," Ben whispered. I smiled and kissed him softly on the corner of his lips. "Tease," he joked. Ben went off to use the restroom and I stayed in my seat drinking champagne. Every once in awhile waiters would bring us small appetizers or small desserts. They didn't taste bad but they were super small. At one point, I was left at the table by myself and some male waiter came over to talk to me. "I've seen you around," he said. "I think we have a few classes together." I didn't really recognize him but he did know about my classes. I tried to be polite but it was weird to talk to him. He was acting like we were friends. He at one point mentioned Liam and Kim but still, I had no idea who he was. I looked over my shoulder and saw Ben talking to Ms. Winters. I wasn't jealous but I did find it weird that Ben hadn't come back and he wasn't running up to punch this guy. They looked like they were arguing but Ben still looked calm, it was Ms. Winters who looked pissed. Ms. Winters then saw me staring and rolled her eyes at me. Ben turned to look at me and saw the waiter guy sitting next to me. I didn't even realize when he had sat down. He was leaning on the table for most of our conversion. "Can I help you," Ben said sternly as he looked at the waiter. "Sorry, dude," he said as he got up and walked away. The waiter winked at me before entering the kitchen and Ben almost ran after him. "Seriously," Ben huffed. "I'm sorry, I left you alone for too long." "It's okay," I said as I took his hand and placed it on mine. "Is Ms. Winters okay?" "No, she is pissed that I brought you and thinks I am an asshole," I laughed a little. Ben took my hand and took me back out to the dancefloor. The music was a little more a beat but still not anything I was used to. Ben was still doing good though. We were having a nice time again. People were still staring but I didn't mind. I had to go use the restroom so Ben went off to talk to some guys and I went to look for the restroom. After I was done, I stared at the mirror and freshened up my lipstick. I really did love the dress he picked for me. I left the restroom and noticed a group of women huddled up in the hallway. "I can't believe he brought her, she babysits his little girl," one said. "I know, she must be after his money," another stated. I knew they were talking about me and the fact that they were right outside the restroom meant they followed me here and did this on purpose. I then saw the red-headed Ms. Winters standing in the center of the group. "Sky, how lovely to see you," she said sarcastically. "Can I have a word with you." "Me? why?" I said as politely as I could. "Just some small talk," she said cheerfully but I knew she was being fake. "Fine," I followed her outside. It was a little cold but I figured this would be quick. "So you came with Ben," she began. "I shouldn't be surprised. You spending so much time with him would only result in a little crush." You would think I was here with her actual husband, not just the man she had a crush on. "Look, I know what this looks like but I like Ben and he likes me," I said sincerely. "You like his image, money, and his nice body," she sneered. I rolled my eyes and she continued. "Did you know that I slept with Ben not too long ago." I didn't want to say anything but she just wouldn't stop. "He doesn't need another child or a gold-digging w***e using Lily to get him in bed." "I told him to sleep with you," I said to her harshly. "WHAT!" she snapped. "I told him to f**k you so he could prove to me he wanted me and only me." She came closer and I stood my ground. "He wants me and only me." "You stupid little b***h," she said as she tried to slap me. I grabbed her wrist and pushed her back a bit. "You shouldn't even be here, he should have never brought you. You don't belong here and you don't deserve him." "Oh, and you do?" "Funny, every woman here wants him, but not to marry just to sleep with. We all know his story but do you?" "I know everything I need to," I told her. "Interesting, so you know he was the prime suspect in his wife's murder," she said. I stayed quiet. "Yeah, Ben was accused of murdering his wife and we all know he did it. He has so much money, of course, he got away with it." "That's not true," I said desperately. "It is, he is crazy and has so many secrets and a dark past. Why else would he live in a small town? He knows that the rest of the world looks at him like a hot billionaire psychopath." "His wife died in a car accident and he lives here to give Lily a normal suburban life," I defended him as much as I could. "Sky, please, she died in a car accident and everyone knows he controlled everything in her life. The car was tampered with. The reports all say it. Sky, he is a murder. So I hope now you understand what you got yourself into." My body felt weak and my heart was beating fast. Ms. Winters soon left and I stayed outside looking at the moon. Why? Why is there so much doubt and secrets?
