Chapter 2 Ivory pov Am I dead? Did I finally make it to the Afterlife? Those words continued to ring inside my head, as I slowly opened my eyes. The first thing that registered in my mind was that I was lying on the ground . My surroundings looked entirely different and strange. I tried moving forward, hoping to scan my surroundings and get a better view around me, but that proved to be impossible. A sharp piercing pain struck my side and I groaned. Wasn't I supposed to be dead? Why did I still feel pain? My memories returned in bits and pieces. Running in the woods, before getting killed by a hired assassin. But not after finding out that my mate Damon had actually ordered for my death, after cruelly rejecting and banishing me from his pack. But why was I still alive? And with serious injuries? I looked around in confusion, my brows knitted in confusion as I tried to make sense of everything. I remembered lying dead on the floor, my blood seeping out of my heart and forming a warm pool around me. As I felt my life slipping away from me. At that moment I realised that I didn't want to die, so I begged the moon goddess for a second chance, even though it was the most foolish thing to do. But here I was, alive? Breathing…Was my prayer answered? My breathing became laborious and I held my head as a blinding headache suddenly appeared threatening to split my head open. Foreign memories returned to me. ************************* Unimaginable strength and stamina continued to course through me, fueling my body to keep on pushing. I jumped through hurdles and fallen trees with practiced ease. I was being chased by unknown people who continued to taunt and called out for me to stop. An arrow flew past me and I watched it from the corner of my eyes. A sharp pain seared through my arm and I glanced down at it. It had grazed my arm and I saw my blood trickling down my arm. I paused. Turning back to the shooters, my eyes sharpened, as I took in my surroundings, strategizing on how to take them down. Within seconds, I was surrounded and the masked men launched at me with swords in their hands. I bent swiftly, missing the first blade that crossed over my head. Using the momentum, I kicked him, pushing him backward as he grunted in pain. A blade was raised, ready to stab my back, but I moved quickly, sidekicking the man behind me, in the belly before I grabbed his weapon and struck into his side. The men shook on seeing this and tightened their grip on their swords as they inched forward. "Just come if you want to. Stop acting all cowardly." I scoffed, rolling my eyes before one launched at me. I smirked, blocking his reckless attacks with the blade I held in my hand. My steps were swift and nimble, the ways of a trained assassin. In the quick moment that he was distracted, my hands disappeared under my cloak, pushing out the hidden needles I had there. The needles flew through the air, taking down three of my opponents in one go leaving only two behind. I could see the look of sheer fear and horror in their eyes. I smirked, grinning like a crazed demon. I was not called the number one assassin for nothing. "Are you sure you want to come?" They looked at each other, mortified, as they gulped on nothing. A smile rose on my face as I returned to a standing position, losing up my guard a little. "I thought as much, weak fool. you could never dare…" A needle pierced through my back and I felt immense pain overwhelming me. My instincts kicked in immediately, and I rolled forward, barely escaping another attack that was aimed for my heart. I turned back, staring at the bastard who had plunged the needle into my heels standing there with a grin on his face and wiping blood from his mouth. He wasn't going to make it either but he was fortunate to still have seconds of time to do what he did. My hands shook, the effect of the poison that was fast spreading into my system. I had miscalculated, one small slip. "What are you waiting for fools? Attack her." His voice came as a shock, leaving me with no time to react. A s***h came through my side, tearing through my clothes and skin. Immense pain overwhelmed me as I looked to the side. The same two men who were scared a few seconds ago now had a surprising amount of courage to attack me. "What now, fearless lady? Cat got your tongue?" He mocked. They swung forward, attempting to snap my neck off with their swords. I breathed out, tightening my grip as I managed to fend off their attack, still clutching my wounded side. I was unable to feel my fingers and my sword anymore. They fell back, blood simultaneously gushing out from their necks. They stared at me in horror, as if wanting to know how they died. "Such useless things. But don't worry, you should be proud to make me use this…," the leader reached for his pockets and brought out a gun. My eyes widened as I saw this; I thought packs were prohibited from having these. I momentarily forgot this wasn't a normal pack but a rogue pack. I swayed still holding on to my sword, my breath hitching. With nothing less than a 10-meter distance between us, he would be pointing the gun at my head and in a few minutes, I'd be dead. My vision blurred from the loss of blood that came from my injury and the fast spreading poison. I was trying to slow it down using a special breathing technique but it was only a matter of time. My heart raced as he advanced towards me. Even though I was fast, running would definitely do me no good. Silence. His footsteps stopped, and I knew he was close by. I held my breath as my fifth sense kicked in. I watched him lift the gun and heard the slow c*****g of the gun. Moments before he turned to shoot, I fell to my knees and looked straight at him. "You won't get away with this" He smirked, his gaze still trained on me. “Already did”. I smirked as I picked up the needle lying next to me. Its effect would still be as lethal as I wanted it to be. It was really stupid of him to think he would be able to take down the number one assassin, alone, even if he had a gun with him. It was a very swift movement with the little momentum I had gathered. The needle was in his neck and I took the gun from him and fired twice. Bastards I had only walked a few miles when my legs felt weakened. I fell to my knees, an agonizing feeling of pain piercing through. I realised in horror that I had become immobilized. How could I forget the poison in my own needles? My feet throbbed as I struggled to get up but all to no avail. Soon, I lay on the floor. the body of the leader I had just killed lying beside me. A bitter smile rose on my face. So this is how I die. The famous masked phoenix, killed by nothing but poison from her own weapon. What a life I had lived, I grinned from ear to ear, embracing the darkness that wanted to claim me. Maybe this was what I needed after all. Freedom. Peace. My vision turned black, and the world faded around me. ********************* I came back to reality as I stared on in confusion. These memories, playing in my mind. They…they weren't mine. "No, not yet." A voice rang in me, the same voice I heard in those memories. She sounded unwilling, her voice weak but determined. "Not now, I am yet to fulfill my mission." The voice grew fainter as I looked around, trying to find any signs of who spoke, but I couldn't find anything. Then I felt a strong pull from deep inside my body, I felt a suction force between my soul and the unwilling soul of the assassin, who continued to thrash and struggled but it was fruitless. Pain exploded in my head, as I heard her cry of pain. asking to stay, until silence remained. The suction had succeeded, merging our two souls together. I stared, dazed in confusion, trying to process what had just happened when I heard howls from around me. Only then did the realization hit me. Right now, I wasn't safe, and I wasn't in a safe place. I struggled to move, using my hands as I crawled through the area, but it wasn't long before my strength died out. I fell face flat on the forest floor, but not before I smelled a scent. Strong and powerful. It was the scent of my mate. Has Damon finally found me? Did he come back for me? I blinked unwillingly, my vision getting blurry as I noticed someone approaching. I took in one ragged breath before everything turned black. Pitch black.
