The Unlikely Encounter
The campus was abuzz with energy as students hurried to classes, laughter echoing in the hallways. Yumi, an introverted freshman, preferred the solitude of her dorm room, surrounded by the pages of her favorite novels. She often found comfort in the worlds created by others, escaping into stories where the characters experienced adventures far beyond her own. While her peers rallied for parties and social gatherings, Yumi was content with her books and the occasional quiet evening in the library.
On this particular afternoon, however, an event was taking place that drew many students out of their usual routines. Festivities filled the air, with booths lining the main courtyard, showcasing various clubs and activities. Yumi walked through the throng of students, clutching her notebook tightly, avoiding eye contact and trying to remain invisible. As she made her way toward the library, she heard a commotion nearby.
“Hey! Does anyone have rice?” a familiar voice rang out. Yumi turned her head, her heart skipping a beat as she spotted Lester, the campus crush, and captain of the basketball team. He was surrounded by a small group of students, his warm smile captivating everyone around him. With his tall frame and confident demeanor, he seemed like a beacon of light amidst the crowd.
Lester had always been the center of attention, admired by girls and respected by guys. Yumi felt a pang of admiration for him but quickly pushed it aside, reminding herself that he was out of her league. She continued on her path, only to hear him again, “Seriously, I’m starving! Is there anyone here who can help me out?”
For reasons unknown, Yumi felt compelled to turn around and approach him. “I have some rice,” she said softly, almost hesitantly.
Lester’s eyes lit up. “Really? You’re a lifesaver!”
She led him back to her dorm, feeling both nervous and excited. As they entered, Yumi offered him a bowl of rice, her heart racing as he thanked her. The casual atmosphere relaxed her, and they fell into easy conversation.
“What’s your name again?” Lester asked, feigning ignorance playfully.
“Yumi,” she replied, smiling despite herself. “I’m a freshman.”
“Nice to meet you, Yumi. So, do you cook often, or was this a one-time thing?”
Yumi chuckled nervously. “I cook most of my meals. I don’t eat anything unless I’ve prepared it myself.”
“Ah, so you’re like a chef then?” he teased.
“Something like that,” she said, a hint of pride creeping into her voice.
Lester, in a playful attempt to show his appreciation, offered her some of his chicken adobo. “Want to try?” he asked, holding out the plate.
“No, thanks,” she replied quickly. “I really only eat what I cook.”
His laughter was infectious. “Fair enough! But you’re missing out on my amazing cooking skills. Just you wait!”
As they chatted, Yumi felt a strange sense of ease around him. For the first time, she wasn’t just another student trying to blend into the background. Lester was genuinely interested in what she had to say, and her heart fluttered with a mixture of admiration and confusion.
They talked about their majors, favorite movies, and their experiences at the university. Each moment felt significant as Lester shared stories of his basketball games and the pressures of being a captain. Yumi listened intently, realizing that she was enjoying their time together more than she had anticipated.
When it was time for Lester to leave, he stood up, looking at her with sincerity. “Thanks for the rice, Yumi. You’re awesome. We should hang out more often.”
Yumi nodded, her cheeks flushed. “Yeah, sure. I’d like that.”
As Lester walked away, Yumi couldn’t shake the feeling that something had shifted within her. She had always viewed herself as invisible, but in that moment, she felt seen—by someone she admired.
