Chapter 4
It was a long night meeting the new neighbors and making a new friend I guess. Mum wasn’t happy that the last neighbors rejected the box of cakes, so she concluded that we’re not welcome here and I told her “this is Nigeria” and I smiled remembering the person that said that to me. I ended up eating the last box of cakes and went to the guest room to sleep because my room paint was still fresh, funny how it’s midnight and I’m still awake I can’t use my phone no signal and I can’t sleep. Now I’m trying to think about something that might make me sleep and all I can think about is South, “jezz” I said. I stood up went to change to my nighties to be comfortable and just maybe I will fall asleep but I still can’t sleep, I stand up again walked out to the balcony to watch the stars and I see South sitting on his balcony too with headphones on using his phone. Then I remembered when he said something about my British accent being sweet and I smiled as I kept starring at him, he turned and his eyes met mine as I looked away and went inside wishing I stayed to look at his cute face one more time. When I got to the bed I closed my eyes and slept off. Waking up to see Mum and Dad smiling at me which was very terrifying, last time the watched me sleep was in my 7th grade which was 4 years back and waking up to their faces made me feel like a child again. Morning butterfly; Dad said
Morning Dad; I said as I pecked him on the chick and turned to my Mum and gave her a kiss on the lips and said, “this is terrifying though waking up to your faces”. The laughed and Dad carried me out of bed tickling me as I laughed out loud and he said “your finally meeting the whole family today”. Well I’m actually happy to meet the whole extended family but most especially my grandparents, I want to see how the look like.
So dad made breakfast and it was horrible, I actually thought my dad was a good cook till now. So what I’m eating is meant to be pancakes but this taste like burnt waffles, God I can’t eat this.
I’m getting ready to meet the family well now I have no idea what to wear, I know Nigerians are cultured so I don’t want to look all slutty I’ll just but on a plain jean and a black T-shirt all my shirts are black. As we hit the road I just found out mum looked pretty today well I have to tell her because she looks really nervous right now and again dad looks confused like he has no idea where we’re going .
“Mum for the record you look very pretty today“ I said
Oh my dear thank you so much at least someone noticed ‘’ she said looking at my dad and I laughed out loud.
“Sorry my bad you look lovely my dearest wife” Dad said with a cute smile. Mum smiled, I love to see them like this expressing their love for each other with their eyes it’s just really beautiful. So I think we’ve been going round Lagos city for the past one hour and we can’t locate the family house just before Dad decided to call uncle Bayo to ask for the house with shame in his voice. I think uncle Bayo should be disappointed in him that he can’t remember where he grew up again, well I guess it’s not his fault after all he has been gone for a long time and things have changed as he said earlier.
We finally got to the house, the guard at the gate open the gate and said something I can’t understand and surprisingly Dad reply and said ‘sanu Musa”. Ok so this gateman is old for dad to still remember him, so dad packed the car and we all got out looking at the big mansion facing us. I am totally amazed because this house is so big and beautiful like old fashion but it’s sexy if I’m allowed to explain it like that, it’s all white and flowers everywhere like I can’t wait to see the inside.
Going inside and everyone is waiting on us like a groom awaits his bride at the alter, as we got into the large living room everyone was standing accept the two old people which I guess are my grandparents.
Oh my dear the old lady said stretching her hands over to my mother as she took her into her arms for a warm hug which was for long and she said something in Yoruba '' Eyawu''. Dad went flat on the floor as he greeted both of his parents in Yoruba and they told him to stand up with a smiling face. I stood at the back thinking they had probably forgotten I was standing in the room or I didn't notice I was their grand child.
As the both stood up from their chairs walking towards me as my old lady said to me" I have waited patiently for this day to have you in my arms young child come and give your grandma a hug she continued". I ran to her and hug her as I buried my face in her chest and I said " Grandma " with my silent english accent and she chuckled " oh my dear child". I looked up to see her old face smiling face but all I saw were tears of Joy in her eyes.
" So my son has finally return back with a family that's a big package you know'' the old man said and everyone who understood laughed and he hugged us all and said welcome to the big family, sorry I mean to the ADEDAYO's and he laughed. I and mum went on and met the rest of the family members like uncle Bayo's wife Simi, aunty Tiwa and her husband Ola, Timin which is also my uncle but he is very young and handsome and then lastly aunty Ronke who came in late rushing and squatting to greet then ran to jump on mu dad. well I guess she is the last child and the fashion designer as dad told me before...well her dress looks really good, it was an ankara gown with a different material on the top and it so fit her.
After a week mum had adjusted to the new environment and had started to make new friends like Mrs Smith who was a medical doctor and dad was trying to get jobs online with the help of Ola aunty Tiwa's husband even if Mr Sola Adedayo my grandfather wanted my dad to take over the family business but dad felt it wasn't meant to be him since he just got back and he hasn't been around for a very long time.
Was asked to start applying for colleges around and I really don't want to stay close to my parents because they're over protective and I feel if I'm close to them they will be visiting me like every day like am a child and I can't stay alone, so I've decided to apply for universities in the north and I'm sure no one will like this.
