Freedom
The feeling wasn't just right for Jalo, as he expected more from this day. He just needed a sign (a thunderbolt, trumpet blast, rockets in the sky...) to believe and to feel how Mandela felt when South Africa eventually got her independence. This can't be the liberty we yearned for he thought as it was just as any other day except for the part that his shirt is not tucked in( a display only done by the most senior class in the school). Jalo was given the post of the Social prefect, a post he craved for since his JSS1(year one). Not just Jalo, all his other mates wanted the Post. Jalo knew he'll be envied because he'll be responsible for organizing all the events that will take place in the school, and most importantly for him is the fact that he'll now be getting all the attention from the girls not just from his school but also the other girls from the different Secondary schools around theirs. Hence forth, Jalo will have to be mindful of how he appeared in and out of school, as much is expected from a social prefect. A social prefect is suppose to look neat always, his English should be impeccable not minding the fact that English is his second language. Knowing all these, makes him doubt if at all he'll be able to be who the school, his mates and the girls expect him to be. So talking about liberty makes one think if Jalo was constantly oppressed. Well, after looking at the privileges entitled to the most senior class, everyone will pray to attain such position. As a member of the most senior class, while other students jug and run through out the day's activities like a military setting, you walk majestically. If you so wish to have someone do your laundry it is all at your disposal. Also you get to send any of your junior who must comply for fear of punishment. It is a tradition in the school to relieve all the SS3(final year) students of their posts and responsibilities as they prepare to write their SSCE( Senior secondary certificate examinations). This tradition is called the 'Handing over' , Where the SS2 students will be given the responsibilities previously held by the SS3 students. ' Why the empty feeling ' Jalo asked himself, its suppose to be a big day as I'll enjoy all the executive privileges. While Jalo was lost in his world of thoughts, he heard a loud gong which signals the time for supper. He jumped out of his bed to make a dash to the Dinning hall, then suddenly he remembered he is now a king and so he had to take steps only befitting a king. Moving out of the dormitory he saw his other mates taking their time to walk while others now wear new pairs of uniform. Indeed it was a long walk to freedom.
