Chapter 1
“Rose! Let’s go!” My friend Merry shouted, dragging me into the bar as I made a quick nod to the security guard who let us in. He released my hand when we made it to the counter. I sighed as we sat down and Merry got a drink for us. “Don’t get too drunk, we have a job to do, ya know,” I warned him, taking a small sip of the alcohol. He just nodded and gulped down his own glass.
We were given a mission by the higher-ups to examine this certain bar. A vampire-infested bar. “There are so many in this room alone,” Merry whispered, scanning the room. I took a glass to my lips as I looked at him. He was excited. “I can feel a few eyes burning a hole through my back right now,” I mumbled and he just laughed. “Your hair does stand out,” he commented.
We were really just observing the situation here until a man in a suit walked up to us. “Are you two new here?” he smiled, leaning his arm on the counter, and taking a sip of the glass in his hand. “We are! How’d you know?” Merry answered back, taking interest in the man. “I come here often so, of course, I would spot a new face.” He continued to have that friendly smile as he answered. “I’m Kyle! What are your names?” He asked, waving down the bartender, asking for a new drink. “Merry!” He’s too energetic sometimes. “And I’m Rose,” I answered with the same smile. “Your name matches your hair,” Kyle commented. “I know right? I said something similar when we first met,” chirped Merry. They continued to chat for a while, while I still felt eyes in the back of my head. Though it was only one pair of eyes.
Those eyes have been staring at me for a while now. I turned my head in the direction of those burning eyes. I was looking upward toward a one-way glass. It was black on my side, so that meant whoever was staring was on the other side. “Oh! That’s where my buddies and I are hanging out. Want to join us?” Kyle asked when he noticed I was staring up at the glass. I smiled, took a quick glance at my phone, and said, “Ah, sorry my brother seems to be very worried about me right now.” That was the line we used when we should wrap up our work. “Aw, he really doesn’t let us stay out too late does he?” Merry fake pouted, shrugging his shoulders. “Unfortunately, we won’t be joining you and your friends tonight.” I feigned sadness. “That’s alright,” He frowned, “Can’t do anything about an overprotective brother.” He sighed as we stood up and paid for our drink. “See you next time Kyle!” Merry waved as we walked out. “Can’t wait to see you guys again.” He smiled, watching us leave.
“While you were chatting I looked around.” I stretched my arms upward as we continued to walk for a short while. “Sorry, I can’t help myself when I see a cute guy.” I laughed at his response. “Yea yea,” I paused, Merry and I nodded our heads at the same time as we noticed the footsteps behind us. “I can’t believe you, Merry!” I began to say as we turned into a dark alleyway. “What did I do now?” He frowned. We were now deep enough in the alleyway. “I just can’t believe you’re so cute!” I laughed a bit at myself. Merry looked like he was going to burst out laughing. “I-I’m sorry! I just can’t help it.” His lips were quivering from stopping himself from laughing. “It is TRULY unfortunate that you have ALL these stalkers.” I snickered as we turned around, facing said “stalkers”. “Gosh, I just look so delicious I guess.” He laughed.
“I wouldn’t be cracking jokes if we were you,” said one of the people. “Oh really? Why not?” I poked, “What are you going to do?” I tested more. “Rose! What are you saying?” Merry questioned, faking fear. Before I could add to his little joke, I felt someone's breath between Merry and me. I summoned my scythe and swung it behind us, causing the last vampire to jump in front of us with the rest of his group. “Aw, I wanted to play along a bit longer.” I frowned, swinging my weapon around, and stuck it in the ground. The tip made a mark on the ground. “That scythe looks familiar…” The voice that said that started to drift off until “R-Rosemary Greene!” shouted the same voice. “Bingo!” I smiled, swinging the weapon up and on my shoulders. The staff on my shoulder and the blade covering Merry’s shoulder. “I-if you’re Rosemary then that means you-,’ He pointed at Merry “You’re Merry Ambers!” He finished and, as he did, “Bingo! Do you want two gold stars?” shouted Merry, as we jumped up, attacking all of them.
My scythe made a hissing sound as I swung it at the bloodsuckers. They dodged and jumped back as I advanced toward them. Merry had balls of fire in his hands. “Is that all you can do?” Merry shouted, throwing the fiery embers at them. “You guys were the ones coming out here and following us,” I added, but they just stared at us. Then, all of a sudden, they surrounded us. “We were just giving you time to live a bit longer,” said one of them. As soon as I processed what he said I couldn’t help but chuckle a bit. “That was a good one! You should be a comedian in your next life,” mused Merry. They glared at our reaction and started to attack us. “Don’t get too cocky!” He shouted.
