Chapter One: The betrayal and rejection
Nothing could have prepared Lilly Fox for what awaited her as she entered her office. Always on time, that day she had reported five minutes late, thanks to the heavy traffic on the road. If there was anything that her boss highly frowned upon, it was being late. Already the receptionist had informed her that Mr. Powell, or rather her boss, wanted to see her as soon as she arrived. She reached her desk and set about arranging the many invoices littering about. Being the company's financial manager, her office served as the nerve centre of the conglomerate. The shrill ringing of her desk phone almost made her to jump out of her skin. Gosh! She had almost forgotten about the summons to her boss's office. With trembling hands, she depressed the receiver button. "Thank heavens you have arrived!" Lorraine, Mr. Powell's personal secretary, exclaimed from the other end. "Mr. Powell requires your presence in his office, now! A word of caution, he is in such a foul mood that he might have your damn ass for breakfast!" She giggled. She was also Lilly's best friend. "Wait! I don't think I have done anything wrong to warrant his displeasure!" Lilly observed. "Spare me your thoughts and hurl your ass up here!" She retorted, referring to the boss's third floor office. Lilly's office was in the second floor of the twenty six storeyed building that housed the Brown Enterprise Limited. Without wasting any more time, she walked out of her office and took a lift to the third floor. She passed by Loraine's office without a word as the latter avoided meeting her eyes. She knocked on the boss's office and entered. Mr. Maxford Powell, the Chief Executive Officer of the Brown Enterprise, sat on his desk, perusing through some files. At twenty-five years, his six packs and well-sculpted figure made him look more like a body-builder than a CEO of a renowned, multinational enterprise. A workaholic of his own kind, he was known to possess zero tolerance to laziness and lateness. Only Jessica Molly, the Human Resource Manager, enjoyed some great exception, but for different reasons. He lifted his eyes from whatever he was reading and surveyed Lilly as she advanced towards his desk. His inscrutable face portrayed no emotions as to what was going on in his mind. When she stood by his desk, he pulled out a pre-typed letter and pushed it towards her. "You are fired, Mrs. Brown!" He simply said as if it was the most obvious thing to say at the circumstances. "What!" She asked, incredibly. "Are you kidding me?" She added, running her eyes over the writing on the paper. "You know as much as I do that kidding is a luxury I can ill-afford," he continued in his emotionless state. "The message in that letter is self-explanatory and I have no apologies to make." "Sure, I can read, but don't you think that I deserve some further explanation? Like the grounds for this preposterous, summary dismissal?" "I'm not at liberty to divulge such information, nor am I legally obligated. Moreover, the letter has adequate details on such grounds." "May I know if this decision has been informed by the Board of directors?" "Excuse me! Just because your husband is President of the Company, it doesn't mean that he can advise me how to run the enterprise. My discretionary powers on who to employ and fire are quite extensive, just in case you didn't know!" "But I'm not just any employee! I'm part and parcel of the Company, lest you forget!" "Then you are at liberty to consult with your husband if you are aggrieved by my decision. If you may excuse me, there is a lot on my desk," he said dismissively, turning to focus on his work. "You can bet on that!" She retorted as she stormed out of his office. She headed straight to Jessica's office. Being her first cousin and bosom friend, Jessica was the only one she thought could share her grief. That the CEO had the audacity to dare sack her from a company owned by her husband's family was something that she had yet to fathom. "What!" She cursed as she knocked on the door to Jessica's office. She turned the knob and entered. "Jessica hasn't arrived?" She asked the secretary. "Nope, Ma'am. She is on a product marketing trip since yesterday," the secretary informed her. "What! I didn't know that she was traveling for business. Sorry, I didn't mean to bother you with that," she apologized as she turned on her heels. She went straight to her office, picked her bag and made a beeline to her parked car. She entered and sat behind the wheel for a moment. Her thoughts were on high gear as she pondered on the whys for her dismissal and her next cause of action. She drew a blank and realized that she needed a breather. She could not think of a better place to relax and put her thoughts together than in the country house, an ingenuous architectural structure that had been left deserted after her mother relocated to the city. * * * * * It was nine in the morning when Freddy Brown, a twenty-eight year-old Alpha of the Blood Moon Pack, stirred from his sound sleep. With his eyes still closed, he rolled over on his side and his right hand landed on someone. He opened his eyes and surveyed the nude figure snuggling him up in bed. With his foggy mind from late partying the previous night, he slowly recalled what had led to that scenario. He did not have the luxury of time as Jessica opened her eyes as if by instinct and cuddled him. "Mmmh..! Thank heavens, you are up!" She started, her hand caressing his back. "What do you mean? Why do you sound as if you never expected me to be up?" He wondered, reciprocating the caressing. "You drunk yourself to oblivion last night. Your almost comatose state gave me the creeps. I felt lonely, you know?" She teased, giggling. "Nope, I don't!" He lied, chuckling. "What exactly did you miss?" He added, planting a kiss on her as he suddenly rolled and climbed over her in a single move. Suddenly, there was a faint knock on the door. Neither of them wanted to bear with the importunate disturbance and they ignored it, each willing whoever it was to tire off and go. Unfortunately, they did not know that with their late partying, they had forgotten to lock the doors. They could not believe their ears when they heard the bedroom door swing open followed by someone's hasty entrance. An awkward moment of silence followed before they turned to look at the miscreant who had dared interrupt their intimate privacy. "What the hell are you doing busting in like this?" Freddy growled before recognizing the figure standing rooted to the floor, her mouth hanging open. "Lilly?" He uttered as recognition dawned on him. "Good gracious!" Lilly screamed, after finding her voice. "Freddy! Jessica! No, it can't be! Let it be a bad dream!" She frantically prayed. "So, this is the supposed business trip?" "Well, darling," Jessica intervened, caressing Freddy's chin, "there wouldn't be a better time to tell her!" "Tell me what, you ungrateful scoundrel?" Lilly retorted. "I gave you all my trust and ensured that you got a job in our company. Is this how you repay me?" "Hold your horses! I got the job because of my excellent qualifications. Besides, what do you have to show for your two years of childless marriage? At least, you should thank me for ensuring that Freddy has a heir," she rubbed it in, proudly massaging her naked tummy. "What are you insinuating? Freddy, I can't believe that you are just lying there listening to this wh*re hurl abuse at me! Pray, for how long has this been going on behind my back?" "Well, you heard her," he responded, unabashedly cuddling Jessica. "I have no apologies to make. Unlike you, she is carrying my heir and that is enough for her to spend the rest of her life with me." "And just what am I to you? Is it my making that I haven't conceived? Is she the reason behind your refusal to visit the doctor as advised?" She was so overwhelmed by the revelation that she almost buckled up at the knees. However, the glaring betrayal and rage in her provided all the energy she required. "I'm sorry am not the sharing type," Jessica continued taunting her. "I mean, the barrenness curse in you might be injurious to my unborn baby, you know. Besides, you and I know that polygamy is unheard of in the human world where we both come from. Though wolfless like you, I have a feeling his handsome wolf already loves me more. So, Freddy has to make a choice between retaining you, and me, and there is no doubt as to his preference. Am I right, honey?" "You are just a pathetic b***h! Do you even realize that where you are blabbering from is my own house? I want both of you out right now!" The anger that she had hitherto kept under control was gradually resurfacing. "Really? Of course, we will, but before we get out, hear this," Freddy retorted. "I, Freddy Brown, Alpha and future Alpha King of the Blood Moon Pack, do hereby reject you as my mate and banish you from my pack." "What! Please, don't do this to me!" She begged, her knees finally giving up. She hit the floor with a thud.
