Betty had always been a morning person, she loved to get up early and get her day started, this was something that drove Jenney crazy about her, but they got over it quickly when Jenney had a witch student put a charm on her that made it, so she couldn't hear Betty when she did stuff around the room in the morning. It was the morning of her day trip to the human world with Nate; she was able to arrange it because she promised she would be giving this whole mate thing a real shot, Mrs. Bloom was more than happy to go with them as a chaperon. Her mother also agreed to come along, so she had someone on her side in case they tried to persuade her in any way, although, she told Nate that if he tried to do that she would cut the trip short and insist on them going back, he promised to behave. She met Mrs. Bloom outside the dorm thinking they would meet Nate at the takeoff spot, but he was right there standing next to his aunt looking overly happy, which just made her feel like she was walking into a trap she had set.
"Hello Mrs. Bloom"
"Don't forget about Nate over here"
"Oh right, Hey Nate" he went to hug her, but she put up her hand to stop him. "No need for that"
"It's just a hug, Betty"
"I know, but I don't think we need to do that right now"
"So when do you think is a good time for a hug?"
"Kids, let's not stand here debating on when to give hugs, we have a long car ride"
The car was waiting out front of the main building, sensing what was about to happen, she climbed into the front passenger seat and put her seat belt on before anyone had a chance to say a word; Nate and Mrs. Bloom looked at each other before they both climbed into the car and were off on the road. Looking in the rear-view mirror, she could see the disappointment on Nate's face but she was not going to take the chance that he tried something on the ride back to the human world, although, Mrs. Bloom kept giving her looks for the first thirty minutes of the ride.
"Wouldn't it be better if you sat in the back with Nate?"
"Why? I think I am fine sitting here with you"
"I'm just saying how are going to talk to him if you are sitting up here with me?"
"Right, well anyway, I can talk to him when we arrive where we are going"
The rest of the car ride was supposed to be quiet however, she heard a faint voice that sounded like it was coming from inside her brain, this made her sit up at once, Betty looked around the car to see where it was coming from; Mrs. Bloom was looking at the road ahead and didn't look like she was thinking of anything. After a few minutes, she heard the voice again, only this time it was louder, and she recognized it after a few seconds; a scowl appeared on her face once she realized who was in her head talking to her, she turned around and gave him a death glare. His smile just got wider when he realized she could hear him, Betty didn't want Nate in her head and tried to push him out but found she wasn't strong enough to do so at the moment, he must have known it too because he kept taking.
"Sitting in the front seat, so you didn't have to talk to me, was clever, but not that clever"
"You should have taken that as a hint that I didn't want to talk right now"
"Then why did you ask me on this little excursion?"
"I wanted to fulfill my obligation to get to know you, as far as I am concerned, this is a formality, I don't have to do more than that"
"Why do you keep trying to fight this?"
"Because I will not be forced to do something I didn't agree to, if I fall in love it will be on my own terms"
"And you think you can't do that with me?"
"When we first met, I literally passed out at the sight of you, my body shut down to keep me from doing just that"
"I am not the bad guy here, I just want to be with my..."
"If you say it, I will shut you out of my mind"
"You can't and you know it"
"Want to test that theory"
"Fine, I don't have to say it, everyone already knows who you are to me even if you refuse to acknowledge it"
Betty didn't hear anything from Nate the rest of the car ride, which was both a relief and disappointment to her, there was something about the guy that drove her crazy; his arrogance was enough to make her want to slap his face, it was like he knew she would give in sooner or later. They met up with Betty's mom at the marketplace in town; the plan was to walk around there for an hour and then head to the amusement park for the rest of the day; she loved going there with her friends and thought it would be a great place to test his true loyalty. The park was packed, they almost didn't find a parking spot, and getting tickets was almost impossible; when they made it in, the first thing Betty wanted to do was get on a ride, there was a new one that had just opened up and the line was really long. Nate was right behind her, and she could tell he was a bit nervous about going on the ride, which made her smile a little, knowing he had a weakness was great for her she could use that to her advantage and force him on every ride in the park.
After the ride, she immediately got in line for another ride, they got on a few more rides before Betty ran into her friend from her old school, the girl was tall with long bright red hair and piercings in her nose and eyebrows; she ran to Betty and gave her the biggest hug, and they started talking a mile a minute. When the girl noticed Nate standing behind Betty, she gave her a questioning look; Betty gave her a look that said "I'll tell you later" and her friend gave her a big smile and dragged her off to another ride for them to get on. Nate was starting to realize that he was being punished by his mate and he didn't know what he did to deserve this, he tried to say something, but she was too busy talking to her friend about what had been going on since she left school, he tried to wait for them to finish, but they just kept going.
"Are you punishing me for being your "you know what"?"
"I don't know what you are talking about"
"We have gone on 6 rides without a break"
"It's not my fault if you don't like heights"
"And what is up with your friend, you are supposed to be talking to me, that was the point of this trip"
"Look I haven't seen my friend in a long time, we can talk later"
Betty went back to talk to her friend pretending like Nate wasn't there; after the tenth ride, Betty's mother came over and had a talk with her about why they were there, everyone could see how miserable Nate looked and they were starting to feel sorry for him so they had to do something to turn the day around. They left the park and headed to a nearby restaurant to get a bite to eat before they had to make the car ride back to the school; Betty's mother encouraged her to at least talk to Nate and find out more about him because she had made a promise. Her mother and Mrs. Bloom sat at a different table to give them a bit more privacy while they had their conversation; this made her feel a bit nervous because now came the part where she would actually have to fulfill her part of the bargain. It wasn't that she didn't want to get to know him, it was that she was afraid of how she might feel after she did get to know him, she had built up this front of not wanting to fall in love, that if she felt herself starting to it would make her feel like she was betraying herself.
She started with the most basic of questions thinking those wouldn't be so bad, and then she moved on to the more complex questions to see how he would react, he was amazing, and this only made her angry because she could feel her walls starting to crack, and she didn't want that to happen right now. Betty tried to go back to the light-hearted questions, but Nate could see what was going on, and he started asking her questions to throw her off; she answered every question honestly, that was the least she could do since this was her idea after all. Switching back to him, she started asking questions about things she knew weren't relevant to getting to know him, he could see what she was doing, but he answered the questions anyway, if she wanted to stall, he would let her, knowing she would be his soon enough.
