Chapter 1: The Weight of Loneliness
A sudden and powerful force hit my face, sending me flying across the room and crashing into the opposite wall. The pain was overwhelming as my head collided with the solid surface, and I felt a hot, salty liquid trickle down the side of my head, blinding me and filling my mouth with a metallic taste.
Instinctively, I covered my head with both hands, trying to protect myself from the kicks that were sure to come. The room spun around me, and I could sense the violent gray wolf energy in the air. I felt helpless and vulnerable, but all I could do was to brace myself for the inevitable pain to come, as I have for so many years already.
You pitiful, shameless excuse for a human w***e - Hailey venomously spat at me - this is what you deserve! With a s******c delight gleaming in her eyes, she viciously hoisted her right leg high, relishing the impending impact of her savage blow aimed directly at my face. Like a pack of soulless predators, her depraved accomplices eagerly joined in, their faces contorted into sinister grins as they eagerly prepared to hurt me.
You pitiful, pathetic, shameless excuse for a human w***e! - Hailey venomously spat at me - Prepare to receive the sh..t you so richly deserve! - her voice dripped with venom, a putrid mix of hatred and disdain that permeated the air. With a s******c delight gleaming in her eyes, she viciously raised her right leg to its zenith, eager to deliver a blow that would leave any human being crippled. Her wicked entourage, fuelled by the same malevolence, eagerly joined in, their nasty faces contorted into sinister grins as they eagerly prepared to hurt me.
I knew clearly that in this twisted theater of cruelty, there was no room for mercy or compassion; only a merciless beating awaited me, each strike a testament to their hatred and the fact that I was worthless to the pack, a nothing, a no one.
In an attempt to protect myself the best I could, I huddled on the floor, curling up and trying to shield my head and vital organs from the merciless kicks that started raining down upon me almost immediately. It hurt in an instant, but I kept quiet, never making a sound. Years of a***e had taught me to endure the pain in silence, because I dared not anger them more, as Hailey and her friends tired themselves out. The kicks gradually slowed and stopped, but I knew it was far from over, but only the beginning.
- You trash - Hailey spat at me, panting heavily - how many times have I told you not to enter the room when I have guests over? But how else can a useless lowlife like you find a mate, unless you fool someone into taking pity on you to take you in? You are nothing but a big, useless piece of trash, eating pack’s food for free and not delivering any value - she sneered, grabbing me by the hair and pulling my head up to face her. I winced in pain, tears streaming down my face uncontrollably, as I tried to avoid looking into her cold, heartless eyes - that’s what you dream about, is it not? You think you can just come in here and try to find a mate? No one wants you. Do you understand me? No one! - she screamed and slapped me twice so forcefully that I could not hold back and gasped in pain. This seemed to give her satisfaction and motivation to kick me more, as she and her friends carried on beating me until they got tired for the second time.
I dared not defy them, not out of fear, but because I knew too well, that resistance would be futile. A few years back when the a***e had just started, I mustered the courage to stand my ground, and got beaten up so badly that I could not leave my bed for several days. I was no match for the 4 young she-wolves, as they possessed unmatched speed and strength, far beyond what any human could ever wield. Regrettably, that's all I was—an average useless human girl, who would never have a wolf and was a weakness to the pack.
On the other hand, Hailey was the only spoiled daughter of Beta James and his mate, who happened to be one of the strongest female warriors in the pack. With two powerful parents, Hailey had exceptional genes, and her wolf had awakened at a young age - a rare sign of talent. The moon goddess had gifted her with a beautiful gray wolf, similar to her father's, but unfortunately, her wolf was as spoiled and prone to bullying as Hailey herself. Despite being two years older than me, I was the constant target of her bullying, so I had to be careful around her to avoid making things worse.
I hated Hailey and her wolf, but even more than that, I despised myself because I was nothing, nobody, an unwanted human brought into the packhouse by Beta’s pity. He found me while patrolling the grounds, taking pity on a tiny human girl crying alone in the woods or maybe just thinking it was bad luck for the pack if a child died on its land. For whatever the reason, he took me to the packhouse where I stayed for as long as I could remember.
I was nothing more than an insignificant addition to the pack. I often helped with chores and in return I ate, slept and went to school like every wolf did. But the fact that I didn't have a wolf marked me as an outsider, a true sign of my insignificance in the pack.
At that moment, Hailey's words echoed in my mind, and I realized that she was right, I had no future here. Who would want me? I was destined to a life of misery and solitude, always on the fringes of the pack. My heart ached with the weight of my loneliness and despair, and that very moment, as I lay there all b****y and beaten, I knew that I had to change my fate, I had to leave the pack.
As if hearing my thoughts, Hailey suddenly released my hair and stepped back briskly, a wicked grin spreading across her face.
- Actually, maybe there is someone who wants you - she said, her voice dripping with malice - I hear there's a human backpacker passing through the woods 200 miles south from here, and he's just your type. A real loser, just like you. Maybe you two can leave the town and make beautiful trash babies together. Her friends erupted in laughter, and I felt a wave of despair wash over me. They would never let me go, never give me a moment's peace unless I leave.
With a final sneer, Hailey and her group of nasty, spoiled brats turned and left the room, leaving me alone and broken on the floor. I knew that I should get up, try to pull myself together and carry on. But I stayed on the floor, too hurt to move. It was not the kicks that hurt me, but the truth. Because deep down, I knew that Hailey's taunts were true. No one wanted me, not here or anywhere else.
