CHAPTER-ONE
“I HATE LOUIS!” I yelled into my pillowcase beside Kate, my roommate, and best friend.
“This will be the third time you’re saying that this week, and honestly, I'm tired of hearing that” Kate replied.
And ouch, that hurts. Louis has been my boyfriend for the past 3 years, and ever since this year began, it’s like he’s been doing everything within his power to upset me. He flirts in front of me, holds other ladies by their waists, forgets our dates, and today was the worst! I caught him and a hot cheerleader in his bedroom, stark naked.
All I want to do is scream into my pillow, but I’m too exhausted to do anything other than coil up and listen to Kate’s breathing beside me. Even the tears refused to fall.
“Alright Alex, come here”. Kate says and spreads her arms wider as I snuggle into a cozy embrace. “What did he do this time? Forgot a date? Kissed a girl?”
“Kate, he cheated''. I hear her gasp, and now she wants to begin a series of questions, but I'm in no mood to speak, and I'm glad she senses it as she just holds me tighter against her chest.
Time seems slower with a broken heart, and right before I can drown myself in sleep, I hear a horn blast. We both do. Kate stands, but she does it gently, considering I'm still wrapped around her.
“We have to go, '' she says brightly.
I don’t argue, as we quickly change from our jeans and top to a free bra top, and shorts. This is one of my favorite things to do. Shifting into a werewolf has a way of liberating me from the burdens of a normal life.
Kate and I walked behind the apartment we stayed in and walked further down into the woods facing the apartment. We specifically chose this place for moments like this. Living as a shape-shifting werewolf in a human world doesn’t feel so hard when you’ve got a friend like Kate, and can suppress your strength.
Kate moves faster than me, and I match her pace eagerly till we get to a lifeless tree in the middle of tall green ones, and unleash ourselves. Bright lights appear on our chest, as our bones make cracking sounds, and surplus hair appears throughout our skin.
Shape-shifting doesn’t hurt as badly as people think, and in a breath, our wolves are out. I’ve always admired Kate’s wolf. She looks healthy, with a bold poker face, and when she bares her teeth, even a Luna might get intimidated. Most of all, she’s a Silver-back. All her furs are silver, except for an attractive black patch on her chest that makes her stand out from every other female wolf in the pack.
My wolf, on the other hand, is the complete opposite of Kate’s. I’m a brown wolf, with no exceptional patches on my chest, or uncommon color, but my eyes are unique. Surprisingly, one of my eyes is silver, and the other is a deep, intense black. Kate always teases me about having the mark of the goddess, but I think I got it from my parents.
Our sprint through the forest is swift. The trees get denser, the path gets harder, and everything looks inhuman. Skulls are scattered everywhere to scare humans away, and the atmosphere reeks of a blood stench that even an average human cannot ignore.
We continue this path for some moments when we hear others behind us, but since the scent is familiar, we know they’re from our pack. After we pass the dead man's lands, we descend a slope and reach one of the widest arenas in the city. Home to the Azul Pack.
Kate holds her head up high as she struts through the crowd, comfortable with the admiration she’s getting from males, females, and children alike.
I, on the other hand, put on a straight, lazy look and walked beside her, my full focus on the arena. In the corner of my eye I catch a big black wolf hidden in the woods, and I halt abruptly.
He’s not from our pack, he doesn’t smell like us, but he’s an Alpha. That spells trouble for everyone. I let out a low growl as a warning sign to him, and I saw him take a step out of the shadows into the light. He’s trespassing on our grounds, and my growl becomes deeper, more menacing.
Kate hears me, and stands beside me, in the mood for a good fight, even though this Alpha could rip ten of us in half without looking back. She lets out a warning howl to the surrounding wolves, and some women and the children run into the woods to find safety, the men gather beside us to stand our ground, and others run to call the elders in the pack before a bloodbath happens. We would be in casualties.
The big bad wolf walks up arrogantly to us, and each step he takes feels like a nerve-wracking pound on my chest. We surround him and place him in our middle. Even if he could kill all of us, he would sustain some injuries in the process.
He locks his eyes on mine, and somewhere in my chest, I flutter. For a second, he looks vulnerable, and I don't want to hurt him. This thought quickly changes when, with the speed of light, he launches himself at me, and the whole pack pauses in a frozen state.
Our eyes locked on each other, his teeth bared, his eyes menacing and my legs frozen. I knew he was aiming straight for my throat and this might be my end when a shadow moved above my head. I almost pass out from shock, but Kate uses her weight to support mine, as I watch the sight before my eyes.
The shadow that flew over my head. I've never seen him before. I’m not sure anyone has. But he smells like us, and he’s as big as the Alpha that almost killed me. He’s a silver wolf, like Kate.
The two Alphas gauge each other for a while. The clouds gather, and every wolf knows there’s a battle looming, not just between the Alphas this time. Kate howls loudly beside me, and all our ears perk up, as our eyes are diverted back to the woods. The Black Alpha did not come alone. A bloody war is about to begin.
