Alex’s POV
It had been a week since I came home and I had spent the majority of that time in the new room I took over. I was healed and feeling better and ready to get back to work. I showered and got ready for the day, and headed to my office. When I walked in, Kane was sitting at my desk doing some work on the computer.
“Why are you still here?” I asked him.
“Because right now I don’t know if I can trust my mate or her parents.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Their daughter kidnapped you and tried to kill you and almost succeeded. How do we know that they weren’t part of it?”
“Seriously Kane. They are good people, and they raised a good daughter but her biological mother turned her. She brainwashed her. It isn’t their fault. Go home and talk to them.”
“I’m not ready yet, OK?”
“Suit yourself, but you need to get out of my desk.”
“Hold on, I am finishing up some paperwork. I may not be at my pack, but I still have s**t I have to do.”
“I know me too.”
“Dad took care of your stuff.”
I walked over to the window and looked out at the training field and saw Zane teaching an elite warrior class. I watched them for a few minutes and decided I would go see how Karly was settling in and talk to her about going to get her mother. I headed to the door when Kane stopped me.
“Where are you going? I will be done soon.”
“I’m going to talk with Karly.”
I opened the door and walked out. I went down to the main floor and down the hall to her room and knocked. I could hear her in there.
She opened the door and greeted me, “Hello Alpha.”
“Hi Carly, can I come in and we talk?”
“Of course,” she said as she opened the door. She already looked better. Her bruises were gone, and she was clean and had clothes that weren’t rags.
“I want to talk to you about finding your mother.”
“That won’t be necessary, sir.”
“Why not?” I asked her, confused.
“I felt our bond break the other night. She is dead.”
“I am so sorry. What can I do for you?”
“Nothing, sir.”
“I would like to offer you a place in our pack, or I can help you get back to your old pack.”
“I would like to stay here. There is nothing for me in my old pack.”
“Very well. What did you do in your last pack?”
“I was an omega, but I would like to learn how to fight. I want to train. I don’t need to be a warrior, but I want to be able to protect myself.”
“Everyone here has that option. I could work with you if you want.”
“Thank you.”
“OK, well, let’s give your body another week or so, and then we will start training. I know you said you were an omega but is there something you would particularly like to do?”
“I would love to work at the hospital. I always wanted to train to be a nurse.”
“Thats fantastic. We could always use more people in there. As long as you can pass the necessary tests and trainings you can be that.”
She got a giant smile on her face when I told her this. Everyone in my pack was treated fairly and given the opportunity to do what they want. We do have omegas, but they chose to do those jobs and are paid fairly. I know some packs still don’t believe in that, but it is something that we have done for a long time.
“I will let you be Karly and I will talk with the head nurse at the hospital, and we will be in touch about getting you started.”
“Thank you, sir.”
I got up and walked out of her room, and headed back to my office. When I walked back in, Kane was still there, but this time he was looking out the window. I ignored him and went to my desk and sat down. I opened my email and had a pile of them to get through. I started going through them and deleting the junk ones, and once those were gone; I started to sift through the important ones.
“I don’t know what to do?” Kane finally said, still staring out the window.
“What do you mean?”
“I want to go home to my mate, but her family did this to you. I can’t just go back there and not have you hate me.”
“Kane, I would not hate you ever. You are my brother and you came to my rescue and I will forever be in your debt for that, but please, your family did not do this. Tinlee did this and you need to go be with Hailee. Please go home to her.”
“I just need a little more time and I will.” He said as he turned to me.
“You know you can stay here as long as you need.”
“You know I would do it again and I would reject my mate for you if she had anything to do with this.”
“I would never ask that of you.”
“You would never have to ask me to. I can’t image what you and your wolf are going through after Tinlee.”
“Just stop. This is enough of the heavy for the day. At least go call your mate.”
He just nodded his head and walked out of my office, and I was able to get back to my emails. I had an email from the Alpha of the Grey Moon pack. Alpha John. We were supposed to meet and then everything went to s**t. I opened his email, and it was what I expected. He heard what happened and he would wait for when I was ready to meet again. I still wasn’t a fan of the guy, but I would hear him out. I sent him an email back saying I was ready whenever he had free time, but he would be coming to me this time. Just after I hit send, someone started knocking on my door.
“Come in,” I hollered out and my door opened and my dad, Xander walked in.
“Hello Son, I am glad to see you back at work. Do you have a minute to talk to me?”
“What’s up, dad?” I asked him as he came and sat down in front of me.
“Well, I wanted to check on you and see how you were holding up?”
“I am fine.”
“I hardly believe that. What you went through is unimaginable. It would be ok if you weren’t ok. I would like for you to see a counselor.”
“Not needed, but thanks. I am healed up and I am fine.”
“You know my first mate rejected me after she used me and that was not easy.”
“Dad, I know all of this. You guys were very open about what happened. I am fine.”
“What happens if you find a second chance, mate?” He finally asked me.
“Thats not a concern of mine right now. If it happens, then I will approach that if it happens.”
“OK, at least come have dinner with us tonight. Your mother is worried about you and wants to see you, but doesn’t want to bug you.”
“I will be there.”
I turned back to my laptop, and he just sat there for a few minutes before he finally got up and left the office. As soon as I was done with the emails, I headed to the pack hospital and sent the head nurse Jenny a mind link and she said she could meet me.
I knocked on her door and went in. She was just a few years older than me and was a friend.
“Hello Alpha, how are you doing?”
“I am good Jenny. How are you?”
“I am good as well. What can I do for you?”
“We rescued a she-wolf when I was taken and I offered her a place in the pack and she would like to try her hand at being a nurse. I told her that everyone here had the option of doing what they wanted as long as they were qualified. Can you please take her under your wing and see if she is someone who can handle it?”
“That would be great. We can always use more help around here. When can I meet her?”
“I can bring her by tomorrow.”
“Perfect. I look forward to it.”
I got up to leave and thanked her again, but I knew she would do it. That was part of being a head nurse. I took the long route to my parents’ house and walked through the pack lands. This was something that I never did, but I took note of some things that could use a little TLC on the outside and made my way through the garden. It was always beautiful, but my mom took care of it. That was something she loved. I finally made my way to my parents’ house, and I found my mom sitting on the porch swing waiting for me. As soon as she saw me, she ran and threw her arms around me.
“Alexander, I am so glad that you came tonight. I have been so worried about you.”
“Mom, I am fine. I promise.”
“Please, just don’t lose yourself in this. If you need help, please tell me that you will get it.”
“I will, mom.”
“OK, good. Now go inside and get your brother to go home to his mate because if she calls me crying one more time, I will drag him back there by his ear.”
I walked inside and found my brother sitting at the kitchen island drinking a glass of scotch. It was his favorite. I personally found the stuff disgusting, preferring whiskey.
“Seriously, I thought you were going home today.”
“Shut it. I will don’t worry.”
“Did you at least call her?”
“Not yet.”
“Well, I can tell you if you don’t, mom is ready to drag you by the ear back home. Hailee keeps calling her crying.”
“I know I have multiple voicemails from her.”
“I promise you that I don’t blame them and you shouldn’t either. I can go with you if you like.”
“No, I will go home tomorrow.”
“OK, good. Let’s go eat.”
We walked to the back porch and sat down at the table that my mom had set and our dads brought over the steak they had been grilling. We were fixing our plates when the back door opened and my sister walked in. I hadn’t seen her in a while. She moved from our pack to her mates when they found each other.
“Alex, I am so glad to see you're OK,” she said as she came over and wrapped me in a hug. Her mate stood behind her.
“Princess, I didn’t know you were going to be here,” Xander said, hugging her next.
“I know. Mom and I planned it. We can’t stay long, but wanted to come.”
“It’s good to see you, sis,” Kane said, hugging her next.
Her mate was an Alpha at a back in Wyoming and so we didn’t get to see her that often anymore, but she loved it there.
We all sat down and ate dinner together when our back door was thrown open again and there stood a red faced Hailee. You could see that she had been crying for a while.
“Hailee, why are you here?”
“Because you won’t talk to me. I need to talk to Kane. Please.” She begged him.
“I am having dinner with my family. I will talk to you later.” He said, dismissing her.
“Kane Andrew, do not ever talk to your mate like. Go talk to her right now,” my mom yelled at him.
“Fine,” he said and got up from the table.
