Chapter 9

2192 Words
Kane’s POV I got up from the dining table and stormed after Hailee. I haven’t talked to her since we found my brother and learned that it was her sister that did it to him. I just couldn’t be sure that she wasn’t in on it. She may not have been there, but she could have helped or she could have known and not told me. I wasn’t ready for this fight with her, but I guess she was. I walked through the house and didn’t find her, so I went outside and saw her sitting under a tree. The sun was setting but I could still see her and her whole body was shaking from crying so hard. “Go to mate. Hear her out.” Mangus linked me. He was missing her. I slowly made my way over to her. Either she didn’t hear me approach or she didn’t care at the moment. I just stood there for a moment waiting for her to say something, but she didn’t. So I did. “Hailee, what are you doing here?” “I miss you and I don’t understand why you won’t talk to me. All I got was that you were staying here to help your brother, and I understood that, but you won’t even call me now,” she sobbed. “Hailee, where you involved with your sister and what she did at all?” “What no. Is that what you think?” “I don’t know what to think. Your sister set up her mate and tried to kill him and my mom. It wouldn’t be a far cry for her to enlist your help.” “Kane, I love you. I would never do anything that would hurt you or your family. Please believe me.” “Hailee, I would have never thought anyone would do this to their mate, and so I am having a hard time with it.” “What about me? Your brother killed my sister and you don’t see me blaming them. In fact, I want to go apologize to him for what she did. I don’t blame him. No one does.” “Then go. I want to see this.” She got up and looked at me as the tears continued down her face and I did feel bad for what I put her though but I had to know that she wasn’t a part of it and I don’t know how she is going to prove that but an apology is a start. She finally walked past me and headed back to the house. “Stop being a jerk,” Magnus linked me. You know she didn’t have anything to do with it. “No, I don’t and I won’t set myself up for what the same thing that happened with Alex to me and I won’t have my mom hurt.” He put up a block and stopped talking to me just as we made it into the house. All eyes were on us. Hailee still had tears streaming down her face as she looked at everyone. “Alex, I am so sorry about what happened. I swear I didn’t know anything about it. I would have stopped her if I did.” “Hailee, I know that, and I don’t blame you. You are a part of this family. Sit, have some dinner.” “Sophia, I am also sorry about everything. I didn’t talk with Tinlee much and I swear if I would have known, she was going to try to kill you.” “Hailee, there is no need to apologize. We know this. Please sit down and eat.” My mom told her, but Hailee turned and looked at me and then walked off the back porch back into the house and everyone turned to look at me. “What was that about?” Alex asked me. “She is trying to prove she is innocent in the whole thing, but I still don’t know if I believe her.” I told him sitting back down. Alex got up from the table and stormed out while my sister and her mate just looked uncomfortable and my mom gave me a disappointing look. She finally got up from the table and my sister and her mate did as well. Both of my dads sat back in their chair and stared at me. “What?” I finally asked them. “Mind telling us why you think she had any part of this?” “Because it was her sister. I would help Alex with anything no questions asked. She would have done the same for Tinlee.” “You wouldn’t help him do something like that. Not torture and try to kill someone that was innocent. You're being an ass to your mate.” My dad, Kane, said. “Let me tell you, I screwed up so many times when your mother came here and I almost lost her. Learn from my mistakes and don’t do this. That girl is telling the truth and you are hurting her. Stop it before it’s too late,” Xander said, and then they both left me alone sitting at the table. I sat there for a long time by myself when my mom finally came back out. “Kane, you need to put your s**t to the side because something is wrong with Hailee.” I was instantly on my feet. “What do you mean?” “She is upstairs in your old bathroom vomiting and has been for a while. She won’t open the door.” I didn’t say anything else to my mom and ran up the stairs and opened my bedroom door and saw the bathroom door shut. I went to it and could hear her. I tried to open the door, but it was locked. I reached up and grabbed the key that we kept there to unlock it. As soon as I unlocked it I found her laying on the floor by the toilet. She looked bad. She was very white looking and her face was red and swollen from crying. “Hailee, baby, what’s wrong?” I asked her as I walked over to her. “Go away Kane. You have made it very obvious you don’t trust me anymore.” She said as she started crying again. “Look what you have done jerk," Magnus linked me and then put the block back up. I got down on the floor with Hailee and pulled her into my lap, but she pushed off me and hung her head over the toilet again and started to dry heave into it. I got on my knees and rubbed her back until she stopped and sat back down. “Hailee, what is going on?” “Don’t worry, it will pass in about twenty more minutes. Please, just go away.” “No, I am not going away. Tell me what is going on.” “You knocked me up. I’m pregnant. What the hell do you think it is? Please, just go. I can’t be around you right now. It hurts too much and puking sucks. I know that I’ve lost you and I just can’t look at you right now. GO AWAY!” she yelled at the end of her rant. I got up on my feet and walked out of the bathroom, but left the door open and sat on the bed. I think I was a little shocked by what she said. Not the part of where she thought she had lost me because of the way I have been treating her, but the fact that she was pregnant. I know she was on birth control. We didn’t want one for a few more years, but I was excited. Now I had to overcome my thoughts of not trusting her. I heard her start to dry heave again, and I ran back into the bathroom and rubbed her back again. When she was done, I picked her up and pulled her into my lap. “Sugar, I am sorry. I know that whatever Alex asked me to help him with, I would with no questions asked and I just thought you would be the same way and you were lying to me. I was wrong. I was so wrong and I promise I am not going anywhere. I love you so much.” I told her as she cried into my chest. I was an ass who did this to their mate, and I had a lot of groveling to do and I would do it. She crawled off my lap and dug through my bathroom drawers. “What are you looking for?” “A toothbrush.” “Let me go get you one.” I kissed her head and walked out of the bathroom and my bedroom and down to the living room where everyone but Alex was sitting. “Is she OK?” my mom asked. “Yes, but do you have a toothbrush?” “Yes, our bathroom under the sink. Go get one.” I got back into my room and found that she had crawled into my bed and was snoring softly. I picked her up and pulled the blankets back and placed her down again. I pulled her socks and shoes off and then her pants and pulled the blankets back over her. Giving her another kiss, I walked out of the room and closed the door as softly as I could. I walked back to the living room where everyone was. “Where did Alex go?” I asked, looking around. “For a run.” My dad answered. We all sat around visiting with everyone until Lucy went to bed and my mom and Xander went to help them make sure they had everything. My dad could tell I wanted to talk, so he hung back. “What is going on?” He finally asked me. “I screwed up.” “I know, but how bad?” “She thought I was going to leave her. I’m not. I need to apologize in a big way.” “Do you have any thoughts on what you're going to do?” “I have an idea, but can you keep a secret?” “Yes.” “Even from mom and dad.” “Well, that depends.” I took a deep breath and then said, “Hailee is pregnant.” He just stared at me for a few minutes before his face broke out in a huge smile. “I’m going to be a grandpa?” He asked. “I guess so.” “Well, in that case, you have to do something big.” “I know, and I think I know what to do, but I need your help.” “What do you have in mind?” “Remember our old rocking horses that we had as toddlers?” “I want to fix it up and give it to her. I have told her how Alex and I used to play on those things and she always said she can’t wait to have our own pup play on it as well.” “Perfect. I know where they are. Let’s go.” He took me down in the basement and sure enough there it sat, it a back corner. Both of them, but we just needed mine. I went and grabbed it and we took it to the garage. We spent the better part of the night working on it. It wasn’t perfect or done, but for right now, it would work and I could finish it once we got home. I found a bow in the Christmas stuff and took it up to my room. I placed it in the corner of the room and stripped down and crawled into bed with her. She instantly rolled over to me and snuggled up to me. I woke up a few hours later to see her coming out of the bathroom. She had showered and looked better than last night. “I’m sorry.” She said. “No sugar. I am sorry. You don’t have a reason to be sorry. It was me being stupid and I promise you I am not going anywhere but home with you.” “I didn’t mean to get pregnant.” “I never thought you did. It may be a surprise, but I am so excited to be a dad.” “I was so afraid that you would be mad about that as well.” “No, come here,” I told her as I got out of bed. I took her to the corner of the room and she found the rocking horse. “Is that?” “Yes, sugar, that is my rocking horse, and my dad and I worked most of the night on it. I still have some stuff to do with it.” “It’s perfect.” She said and kissed my cheek.
