756 Words
I always knew she hated me. Old Johnson was always full of herself. Her rules were to be followed strictly unfortunately I'm not the obedient type. " First you killed my husband and now my son! What more do you want from me!" She yelled at me. I was thankful her outburst was after the ceremony and it was only family members present. " Do you think this is the time to voice out your anger and hatred. I am equally pained by this unfortunate event." I uttered tring hard to keep my cool. " My only child died because you are jinxed. Ha! That was why, I was against your marriage in the first place. You are a filthy witch!" " We all here knew you wanted James to marry someone of your choice and when he still insisted on marrying me, you have bluntly shown your displeasure towards me." " I will never forgive you for what you did to my husband!" " He died of a heart attack, have you forgotten." I rebutted. " A heart attack you caused!" She shot back. " I never murdered him!" I snapped. " And who believes you here." I scanned around as everyone withdrew. " I'm not scared of you Old Johnson. See you when the 'will' is read. Liah dear lets leave from here." It wasn't new to me, after all she had always been a two faced being. She had a different attitude towards James, and me? You wouldn't want to know. Sometimes it did hurt though I had heard lots of stories of mothers-in-law acting rugue to their daughters-in-law. Well after his death I'm only going to do my best to protect my daughter. she was the only reason I had to live. Molly drove us back home. " Mom why was grandma speaking to you In that manner?" she asked. I crouched to her height. " Never mind dear sometimes some situations call for different reactions." " Okay mom but I wasn't happy with how she spoke to you I won't let her do that...." I chuckled at her reaction. " I know you are tired go take your bath and rest." " I will prepare a bathe for her right away." Molly offered and I nodded as I retired to my room. It was filled so many memories of him. His laughter, his jokes, presence, his sorrowful moments. I picked up our wedding picture which was on the bed stand. My fingers traced his face. A tear dropped on the glass frame then I realise I was crying. " I love you James. This heart will forever be yours. Never will I even dream of falling in love again." I shook my head violently hoping he would just appeared out of nowhere cuddle me in his arms again and tell me all was a nightmare. ************ The day set for the reading of the will. I sat stiffly in the family house. Old Johnson also took her seat at the far corner of the hall with the rest of the family members. It was dead silent as Barrister Zack entered. I entwined my hands with my daughter. Old Johnson glanced at me trying to intimidate me but I refused to be! Barrister Zack cleared his throat then proceeded with a joke which washed off the tensed atmosphere. " I'm sure you are all aware why we are here today. As the executor of James Johnson who is also my blossom friend it is of great pain I, read his last will." I swallowed a huge lump in my throat dreading this, for days unsure of what secret James's will might reveal. He opened a set of documents. " It is quite unpropitious James passed away suddenly, leaving behind complex web of business interests and assets namely; cars, mansions, estates, private islands, hotels and JJ.TECH." " I James Johnson of sound mind and heart leave all the businesses to my wife lora and the assets to my daughter Liah on the condition that they will protect it and take full responsibility." I was flabbergasted. James left me with the company? But why? I glanced at Old Johnson with a knowing smile which fuelled her anger. When Barrister Zack finished the hall was dead silent, there I knew my life would never be the same. " Do you think you can possess what is mine for long." Old Johnson did not mince her words. " Lets wait and watch." I exited with Liah.
