TessAlmost six months earlier… August 27, 2017
It was our typical Sunday mid-morning ritual, my girls and I met up at the Bagel Bandit, drinking mimosas and stuffing our faces full of carbs.
“So Lindi, how was your date last night?”
“Ugh, I’m ready to throw in the towel. Dating sucks!”
“I second that,” Kallie agreed.
“I blame Fawne for setting me up.”
“He wasn’t that bad, Lind. Besides, you can’t blame me, he’s a friend of Johnathon’s,” Fawne laughed.
“Not that bad? He got drunk and called his mom in the middle of the date to tell her that he’d found the one!”
“Well, you are quite the catch, Lind,” I laughed.
“Shut up! Then to top it off, after he hung up with his mother, he called ‘the one,’ and begged her to let him come over.”
“Oh, s**t girl, sorry,” Fawne covered her mouth to hide her laughter.
“Damn girl that sucks! You had a worse date than I did,” Kallie laughed. “My date had already ‘accidentally eaten’ dinner already so then he sat there and watched me eating wings and when I went to wipe my fingers off on my napkin he told me, ‘just lick them, please’. It was the weirdest thing.”
“Good lord, you heffas make me so happy to be married. Tess aren’t you glad you don’t have to deal with this anymore?” Fawne asked.
“I don’t know.”
“What don’t you know?” Lindi frowned at me.
“You are engaged to the Grier Gregory,” Kallie chimed in.
“You make it sound like he’s Michael Ealy or something.”
“Girl please, Michael ain’t got nothin’ on Grier,” Kallie swooned. She had always crushed on him.
“Ha, ha. Whatever.”
“I agree, we all know Grier is fine, but…,” Fawne said.
“Speaking of fine, have you seen the guy in the trucker hat?” Lindi interrupted. She was always cutting people off. It wasn’t intentional, she just always had something to say.
“Where?” Fawne asked.
“Um, aren’t you and Johnathon all happily ever after.”
“Just because I’m married doesn’t mean I’m dead. And I second that damn, Lind.”
“Who in the world, are you guys talking about?” I turned in my seat. “Wait, that guy in the jeans and cowboy boots waiting to get a table? Oh please.”
“We can’t all have Grier Gregory’s, you know. Some of us have to lower our standards,” Kallie said.
“If that’s lowering standards count me in. I don’t usually do vanilla, but damn gimme some of that,” Lindi danced in her seat.
All I could do was shake my head and laugh.
“Well on that note ladies, I have to run. Johnathon and I have a movie date. Love you girls!” she got up to give us all hugs.
“Love you too,” I hugged her.
“Have fun,” Kallie said as she hugged her.
“Tell Johnathon ‘hello’ from us,” Lindi said as she hugged her. “Be safe.”
“Will do, bye girls”
“Bye,” we all said in unison.
Fawne waved and headed toward the door.
“Don’t get caught doing anything raunchy,” Lindi yelled after her.
The entire restaurant looked in our direction and started laughing. I looked up and just happened to lock eyes with Mr. Cowboy, he smiled and nodded.
Lindi, Kallie and I were finishing our brunch when the server came over and asked if we wanted anything else.
“No, I’m stuffed,” Kallie said.
“Me too,” Lindi seconded.
“I think we’ll just take the check. Thank you!”
“You’re welcome, I’ll be right back,” our server said, clearing the table.
A few minutes later she returned with the check.
“Hope you ladies enjoyed your brunch. Your bill has been all taken care of.”
“What do you mean?” I asked.
She tipped her head in the direction of Mr. Cowboy boots and handed me the bill that said paid, with a note attached.
Pardon me-
Sorry to disturb you darlin’ but you are absolutely gorgeous, and I just had to tell you so or I would have kicked myself later. I’m new in town and would love to grab a cup of coffee sometime. 502-555-2310 Have a good day.

“Well, damn. He’s fine and he can pick up a tab,” Lindi smiled. “Did he say which one us of the note was for?”
“Yes, ma’am. He said the pretty young lady in the yellow top.”
“Dammit Tess! Just our luck you got, Michael Ealy and Ashton Kutcher chasing your ass, can you save some for the rest of us?”
“Ha, be quiet Lind. Can you tell him we appreciate it, but it’s not necessary? We can take care of it ourselves.”
“Speak for yourself, tell him we send a very gracious ‘thank you’!” Kallie said.
“And if you aren’t going to use his number, I damn sure will.”
“What?”
“What am I saying is that I know you aren’t going to use his number, so just slide it over to me, my sista,” Lindi laughed.
“Girl, here!” I slid the note to her. “Are you really that hard up for a man.”
“Yep!” she snatched the note up off the table.
“Yea, you have fun with that.”
