Battle Buddy

Davina was standing at attention fighting every instinct she had telling her to look as that smell got closer and closer to her. She could hear the instructors approach someone and suddenly she smelled fear. She heard someone begging to stay.. “Carter?” she thought. She was bewildered that he would beg like that. When she heard what it was about she felt sorry for him, even if he was one of Wilson’s goons. He clearly did not want to be separated from Wilson. Davina had no clue he was an only child. She could smell the tears and distress coming from Carter. Her wolf whined in her head a little, also feeling sorry for Carter. Then the instructors approached her and her heart nearly leapt out of her chest. Her eyes were met with a pair of blue eyes and she stared blankly into them. They were bluer than the ocean, like two bright sapphires. She compared them to stone washed denim. She wasn’t sure if her jaw dropped open or if it was all in her mind. Her wolf leapt under her skin excitedly. “What is going on right now Lexy?” she spoke to her wolf silently with her thoughts. Lexy replied, “We found him, we found him!” “Who?” said Davina. Lexy responded, “Our mate! He’s the one! He’s our mate! I can sense his wolf!” Finally it clicked with Davina why she was feeling so strange all of a sudden. She had always loved the smell of fresh cut grass and it would only make sense that her mate would smell of Vetiver now. “Well he’s definitely older than us considering he’s an instructor.” thought Davina. Then he looked at her charts and spoke, “Looks like everything checks out here, just be sure to up your protein and iron intake and drink plenty of water. Short intensive exercises combined with endurance training will be suitable for you.” His voice was like a deep humming music to her ears. She could feel his deep voice reverberate inside her chest. The new sensations were strange to Davina, but somehow all she wanted was to be close to him. Then just as soon as the blue eyes met hers, they were gone. He had moved on to the next person. “What if he can’t sense us?” she thought to her wolf. “Sure he can, why wouldn’t he?” Lexy said. Soon enough all of the assessments were done and Harald, Paul, and the Black Creek instructors all stood together in front of the remaining trainees. “To end our first training session we are going to run a few laps around the field. You will be assigned a “battle buddy” at this time.” Said Paul. Davina silently smiled because nine times out of ten, her and Lena always ended up together. It was specifically because most of the time seating charts and other activities were done in alphabetical order of the last names. Since Davina and Lena’s last names were Harper and Frederickson, they usually had a good chance of ending up together much to their relief. As they announced the names of the people who would be paired up as battle buddies, Davina and Lena’s names were called together once again. All of the already paired battle buddies exited the line and stood off to the left of the instructors waiting for further instructions. As Davina jogged to catch up to Lena, she could have sworn she caught a glimpse of the blue eyed man looking at her. As she stood beside Lena they exchanged excited expressions, happy that they were paired together once again. While they waited patiently, Davina was able to get a better look at “Mr. Blue Eyes”, or at least his side profile anyway. He was very tall with broad shoulders and a stern look. He had blonde hair that was cut into a militaristic style. Lena nudged her with her elbow, “What in the world are you staring at?” whispered Lena. “I’ll tell you later..” Davina whispered back. Lena shrugged and watched to see who Wilson would be paired with next. Much to their amusement, he was paired with red haired girl. He sulked as he walked over to join the rest of the trainees with his new battle buddy. Lena whispered to Davina, “I can’t wait to see how that goes.” Davina giggled and said, “Shhhhh you’ll get us in trouble!” After everyone was finally paired with their battle buddies, Paul cleared his throat and spoke in a loud clear voice, “Some of you have been paired with the opposite gender. The reason for this is because on the battle field, not all of your fellow warriors will be the same gender, so you’re going to have to overcome the fact that you have different body parts and learn to be more mature about things as minor and petty as that. One of the best warriors I’ve ever known was a female. Many men were lucky to have served along side of her. I don’t care what you do in your free time, but in the field you will restrain from any s****l misconduct. If you find that you cannot control your body parts, then it is better to cut them off rather than cost the lives of your fellow warriors due to negligence of your mission. If you’re too busy trying to fornicate with someone of the opposite gender, then you’ll be too busy to notice the enemy sneak up behind you and end your life as well as others whom you’ve ultimately failed. Have I made myself clear?” “Yes sir!” all the trainees responded in unison. The Black Creek instructor nodded in agreement and said, “Now that you all understand, let’s get ready for our first of many routine runs. Each meeting we will run a little farther than the last time.” A few quiet groans could be heard among the crowd, but they didn’t dare object openly. Davina wasn’t a huge fan of running long distances, but it would be a lot more tolerable with her best friend Lena by her side. They ran until their legs burned and their lungs felt raw. Three quarters of the way through the run, Lena stopped and stepped off to the side. “Lena?” questioned Davina. Lena was puking on the side. “Uh oh I’m coming, hold on!” Davina rushed over to her side. Davina pulled Lena’s long blonde hair back so she wouldn’t get vomit in her hair. “Dang chili fries I had for lunch..” said Lena while wiping her mouth. Davina gagged and suppressed the urge to vomit at the sight and smell of Lena’s vomit. She was thankful that she had a light lunch that day and took a mental note to continue to have light lunches on training days. Just then, there was a group of girls that had also stopped not far from them to look at something in the bushes. Davina sniffed the air. “It smells.. cute.” she said aloud. Lexy chimed in and said, “Don’t you go over there! Don’t you do it! Stay focused. Davina! Davina?..” At that moment Lena also stood upright and sniffed the air.
