Davina and Lena walked over to the group of girls to see what all the fuss was about. “Curiosity killed the cat!” said her wolf Lexy who was scoffing at her. In the bushes there was what looked like a fluffy little kitten. “Well, looks like it is a cat!” said Davina mockingly to her wolf. Lexy responded, “THAT is NO cat!!!” The girl closest to the kitten was saying “Here kitty kitty..” Davina couldn’t understand her wolf’s reasoning, that is, until something massive lunged from the bushes knocking the girl backwards several feet!
The group of girls screamed in terror and scattered. Lena’s eyes grew as wide as saucers. “What.. the hell is that!??” said Lena. Davina got a good look at the creature as the other girls ran for their lives. When her mind figured out what she was looking at she was mortified. It had a wide fat head with big yellow eyes and yellow frills on its neck. The face resembled a catfish without the whiskers. It’s mouth was enormous and filled with teeth similar to a shark’s teeth. It was dark green and black in color and scaly like an alligator and easily weighed as much as a cow. It flicked its long forked tongue like a snake. From the depths of its belly it let out a loud rumbling growl.
It spotted the girl that it knocked backwards moments before and moved in her direction. Davina knew she had to distract it or else the girl was going to be it’s dinner for sure. She looked around her for a weapon of some sort. All she could spot was a baseball sized rock lying on the ground. She slowly bent down and grabbed the rock. She gathered her courage and ran for it! She ran in front of the girl lying on the ground just in time for the beast to notice her and stop.
The girl behind her shook her head dizzily and then screamed when she realized what was standing on the other side of Davina. The beast opened its mouth wide and roared. Davina took the opportunity and hurled the rock into its mouth as hard as she could. Bullseye. It landed right smack in the back of its throat. The beast sputtered and choked and shook its massive head as Davina helped the petrified girl to her feet. Lexy chimed in, “You’re going to have to get behind it somehow. There’s a soft spot on the back of its neck. You need to sever its spine! Don’t let it scratch you, the claws are venomous!”
On the other end of the field Harold was watching his mate from afar. He saw the group of girls stop to look at something in the bushes. “What are they doing?” said Harold. Paul and the Black Creek Instructor also turned their attention to the scene. Just then a massive creature barreled out of the bushes. “Gully Drake!!!” shouted the instructor. Before anyone could make a move Harold tore off down the field, shredding his clothes as he transformed into a white wolf with brown undertones.
Davina watched in horror as the beast turned its attention back to her, now angry. It looked like it was getting ready to pounce on her while she frantically tried to decide how to get around it. Just as it leapt at her, Davina dove out of the way. All of a sudden she heard the beast make a shrill shrieking noise. A huge white wolf with brown undertones was latched onto the back of the beast’s neck snarling. Then there was a sickening crunch and a loud thud. The beast was dead.
The huge wolf walked over to her and sniffed her, it’s blue eyes peering at her. She recognized the wolf to be her mate. She smiled and ran her fingers through his fur. Paul and the Black Creek Instructor caught up to them in a hurry. Paul turned to the instructor and said, “Well I think I better take Harald home now. I think that’s enough practice for one day.” The pale looking instructor nodded in agreement and said, “Agreed. I’ll gather the trainees and dismiss immediately.”
Paul interjected, “I know a guy that’s an exterminator and can get rid of those things. I’ll get you his card.” The instructor looked at him, “Thank you so much for coming! We really appreciate the extra help around here. I can assure you this never happens.. I don’t know why that thing would come onto school grounds. Gully Drakes usually won’t go that far away from the water.”
Harald whined as Paul ushered him towards the truck. He glanced one more time at his mate who was helping the girl in shock. There was so much more he wanted to know about her. As Paul was walking away with Harald he said to the instructor, “Make sure they know not to go around petting lost kittens anymore..” The instructor smiled nervously, “Um, yes, I will address that immediately..”
As soon as all the chaos was over, the trainees were called in for dismissal. The instructor was very quick to dismiss and ordered everyone to leave immediately. On the ride home Lena had forgotten all about Davina’s odd reaction during the assessment and instead was still freaked out by the Gully Drake. “You scared me to death, Davina! I thought you were a goner for sure!!! I’m so sorry I didn’t do more I just.. I just froze! I mean the size of its mouth! And those creepy yellow eyes.. I’m never going into the water ever again.” said Lena.
Davina laughed. “The instructor said that they live in the Gullys. They only come out to feed when it floods. It has to be a heavy rain to reach those old gullys out in those woods, they won’t come out if it’s just a light rain. So as long as it’s not flooding we should be safe.” replied Davina. “I think I’ll steer clear just to be safe..” said Lena. The rest of the ride home was quiet as the girls were pretty tired from the eventful day. There were creatures out in those woods that neither of them even knew existed, some of which no one knew still existed.
