Aunt Carly

1142 Words
The door swung open and Richard said "Wake up." in a bitter tone. It startled Davina and she jolted awake. "Oh yay, another day." She thought to herself. The morning light assaulted her eyes. "Oh, you could ruin a wet dream in a swimming pool." She thought. She was having the most amazing dream. She dreamt she was gazing out through the window at the stars, as she sometimes did at night, hoping a flying mystical figure would come and take her to a place far away. Only this time, in her dream, a figure really did appear! The dark mysterious shadow held out his hand to her and said, "Come, it is time." There was an eerie yet calming red glow behind him and she had almost touched the hand when she was jolted awake. Her first waking thoughts after her heart stopped racing were filled with curiosity and wonder. "Who was the alluring figure? Why couldn't I see his face? What would have happened if I touched his hand?" She pulled on some jeans, a loose tee, and her favorite sneakers and tried to adjust her wild morning hair. Davina had long, naturally curly hair that seemed to contain every color in the sunlight, but it primarily looked light brown with a ton of blonde natural highlights. When she studied her own hair in the sunlight she could see red, black, blonde, and brown. At first glance you could say she resembled the classic "Goldilocks" with long blonde curly hair. She hated that reference though, she was no porridge thief! Also goldilocks was always depicted with blue eyes, and she had deep brown eyes with tiny, barely noticeable, green rings. The green rings were sort of like the rings you would see on a tree stump. Her complexion though, didn't quite match her eyes. She was very fair complected with subtle golden yellow undertones. She would tan nicely, with a pretty golden tan, but it seemed her tan never lasted for long unfortunately. She proceeded with the rest of her day and had just finished her homework that evening, when suddenly a fight broke out between Richard and Jolene. She loved Jolene but could not understand why Jolene tolerated Richard. She wasn't sure what the fight was about, but she could see Jolene storming towards the front door. Richard said, "Where are you going now!?" And Jolene screamed, "TO MY MAMA!!!" And slammed the door behind her. Davina understood that this was a good enough reason to silently walk to her room as quietly as possible, as if she had never been there in the first place. If she could just teleport, she would. She quietly closed the door to her bedroom and decided to read a book to try and escape it all. After a while, she creeped out to grab a glass of water, remembering that she had forgotten to refill her water bottle that she kept in her room. That's when she heard muffled cries... "Emma?" She thought. When she reached the kitchen, she saw Richard and her younger sister Emma sitting at the table in the adjacent dining room. She didn't dare pry, but then Richard screamed at Emma, "Just admit it! You did it!!!". And Emma sobbed uncontrollably, saying, "I didn't do it I promise..". She had never seen Richard make Emma cry like that. Suddenly she felt something snap. A voice came through bold and clear in her mind, "Defend her! He will attack you regardless! We can withstand this, but you can spare her this torment!" And she subconsciously agreed and before she knew what she was saying, she blurted out, "Leave her alone! She said she didn't do it!" Richard snapped his head in her direction and grinned a devilish grin. "Oh, so you want some too? Emma, go to your room now. Davina, come here.." Emma walked away slowly looking as pale as a ghost. Davina bravely walked up to this twisted, evil man and calmly sat down at the table and looked straight into his cold, sickening sea foam green eyes. Malice, pure malice, was what his eyes shone. She was sure her own eyes must have emanated the hatred she felt for him in return, like a raging fire burning from within. He screamed at her, for how long she wasn't sure, because she could barely make out what he was saying. The reason for that was because, to her surprise, her ears started ringing loudly the moment he spoke. Then Richard grasp her throat and slammed her against the wall. The chair she was sitting in chipped away at the dry wall. Suddenly she was aware of the hands on her throat. She looked into the eyes of her enemy and he suddenly released her. "Now go to your room before I change my mind!" He screamed. She stood up and walked, zoned out as if she were a zombie from the movies. On her way to her room she could have sworn she saw Emma peeking around the corner. When she rounded the corner she came face to face with Emma, her face still red and puffy from crying. She whispered, "I'm telling mama about this!" And Davina looked at her blankly as she slid quietly into her room. Davina followed suit, closing the door to her own room. But she knew it was no use, Jolene would not make Richard leave. Jolene couldn't afford to pay the mortgage without Richard. Sure, Jolene's sister (her aunt) would help. And she knew that her aunt had already helped them pay many bills judging by the things Jolene would say when Richard wasn't around. She knew Jolene wouldn't want to put that burden on her sister. She felt sorry for Jolene. She wished she could save her mother, but it was not possible at that time. There were also many times her mother didn't stand up for her. Regardless, she still loved her mother and wished that Jolene could one day find peace. As for herself, it was too little too late. She was nearly eighteen and her childhood was already consumed with miserable memories. She had very few pleasant memories. Most of her good memories were with her aunt. Aunt Carlene was Jolene's sister. Aunt Carly was a fire cracker sort of woman! She was not afraid of anything or anyone! She was petite and short, but brave! She had blue eyes and short, strawberry blonde hair, whereas her mother had beautiful dark onyx waves and brown eyes that resembled Devina's. Carlene was a strong woman who loved gardening. She had a real green thumb. Davina loved the smell of the roses she would grow and the peppermint that grew by her stone doorstep. Davina had never been anyone's favorite, but she knew that aunt Carly favored her.
