That night when Jolene arrived back home, Davina was tucked under her quilts. Not long after, Davina could hear bits and pieces of an argument between Jolene and Richard. Jolene said, “You can’t do that!” to which Richard replied “But that little bit**…”. Davina heard it, furthermore proving what she had known all along anyways. Richard hated her, and the feelings were definitely mutual. If she never had to see him again it would be too soon. She didn’t know a lot about love, but from her books and stories she loved to read, she could assume that being called such names was not love at all. She heard footsteps approaching her room and she pulled the blankets up to her neck and turned over, her back facing the door. She tried her best to look like she was already sleeping. The door opened, then closed quietly again. She drifted off to sleep.
When she woke up it was Saturday morning. No one woke her up this morning and she was grateful for the extra sleep. She eased out of bed and creeped out of her room not knowing what to expect. Jolene was in the kitchen making tea and Emma and Anna were looking bored watching television. Richard was preparing to leave for a hunting trip with his buddies who seemed equally as de-evolved as him. “I’m going to go put on my new bikini and go outside and tan!” said Anna. “I’ll join you.” replied Emma. Richard said, “You already look like a little Mexican girl”. Anna glared at him. Then Richard said, “You always tan the prettiest!” And made a quick glance in Davina’s direction. Davina avoided his expectant glance and silently rolled her eyes. She was always made fun of by them for being super pale. Richard was no stranger to sneaky cheap shots when he saw an opportunity. Davina couldn’t say anything though or he’d turn the situation around on her like he always does to make her look like the bad person. “It’s so hot outside, let’s bring some iced tea.” Emma said. They strutted off towards the kitchen for tea.
Richard looked around to make sure no one was listening and then spoke without looking at her, “Oh and by the way, Devina, you need to keep that vent open in your room at night. It might cause the air conditioning unit to freeze up if you keep it closed..” He paused what he was doing to look at her, smirking. Then he walked off. “Oh great,” she thought, “now he’s going to freeze me to death.” He kept the thermostat as low as it could go at all times. It was always freezing cold in there, not unlike his heart. She walked in the opposite direction towards the kitchen to fetch some tea for herself as well.
She stood quietly at the counter sipping her warm tea and thinking about that voice she heard the night before when Emma was crying. Could it be my wolf? Is my wolf finally here? Everyone received their wolf between the ages of sixteen and eighteen. Davina was nearly eighteen now, and a late bloomer. Emma and Anna were still too young for their wolves, as they were only 14. She was looking forward to meeting her wolf and the freedom and strength that having a wolf brought. Going for runs through the woods would definitely be more fun with her wolf! She silently smiled to herself. Just then there was a knock at the door. She sat her tea down and walked to the door and opened it. Her heart felt even warmer than the tea when she saw the unexpected visitor.
Earlier that morning, a kind older lady sat alone at her dining room table thinking of the one she had loved for so many years. “Oh how I miss you.” she thought. “If only you could see our sweet young Davina and the wonderful young woman she has become! You always loved children and you would have just loved her! She was such a beautiful healthy baby! I wish with all of my heart that I had been able to give you children.. Davina is so much like me she could be my own daughter!” Just then her thoughts were interrupted by the phone ringing.
“Hello?” she answered. “Jolene!? How have you been? How’s my Davina doing?” she asked. “Hmm..” she said while listening to the woman on the phone. “Ok I will be right over! Give me 10 minutes!” The kind lonely lady smiled and placed the phone down. “It looks like I will be having some company!” She said to herself cheerfully. She gathered her purse and keys and headed to her faithful old green truck that her husband had left behind. She loved driving in his truck and could swear she even still smelled his scent in the truck from time to time.
Meanwhile, Jolene snuck back inside after her private phone call. She decided to make some tea to pass the time. She really did not want to speak to Richard so she kept her hands busy. She didn’t care that he was leaving and wished he’d leave even sooner! Richard mentioned earlier that morning that he would be going on a hunting trip. “Well good riddance!” she thought. She disliked how Richard treated Davina and hated the fact that she had to tolerate him for the sole purpose of being able to afford the home that they lived in. She did not make enough money to handle everything on her own, unfortunately. However, she wanted her kids to be able to have a nice roof over their heads. Her girls were all that kept her from leaving. If it was just her, she would not have tolerated Richard for one more moment.
