Monday was gone before Davina was ready. She had been mentally preparing herself for how she was going to approach Harald without everyone knowing about it at the same time. It was already Tuesday morning and Davina’s door was slammed open by Richard, as usual, and she jolted awake startled and confused. She sat straight up, wide eyed and sweating from the adrenaline. She had just been having a nightmare about the Gully Drake.
It‘s forked snake like tongue flicked about as it searched for her while she desperately tried to hide from it. She saw the abomination that was it’s second tongue and how the tongue could change shape into a kitten, or anything it desired, so that it could lure in some poor unsuspecting prey. Barely awake and wet from sweating, the cold room made Davina shiver. Still shaking, she changed out of her wet, sweat ridden pajamas and into a dry pair of clothes for school. By the time she got to school, the nightmare had finally worn off. She was thankful that her wolf had the ability to recognize strange creatures like that. Even it’s scent was capable of luring prey, although it wasn’t a very strong scent. It was only enough scent to peak someone’s curiosity a little, but a little was all that thing needed to score it’s next meal.
Davina saw Lena walking across the parking lot and hurried to catch up to her. “Hey Lena! Wait up!” said Davina. Lena spun around and Davina almost collided into her. Lena laughed and said, “There you are! I was just looking for you. I heard that we might get to see some action this evening during training. They’re talking about teaching us hand to hand combat! This should be interesting!” Davina laughed and nodded in agreement, “Hey, I really need to talk to you about something if you’ve got a minute.. But you’ve got to promise me you will keep it secret.” said Davina. Lena looked at Davina curiously and said, “I’m the best at keeping secrets..” Lena winked. “No I’m serious, this is really a secret..” said Davina. “Ok ok, let’s walk to the library before class. We can have some privacy and quiet there.” Lena joked.
When they got to the library they sat at a table in the far corner and pretended to look at books as they talked quietly. Lena looked at Davina with anticipation and said, “Well, spill the tea! What’s up?” Davina looked around nervously before saying, “Lena, I found my mate..” Lena’s jaw hit the floor and her eyes grew wide.
“Oh. My. Gosh.. You HAVE to tell me everything!!!” said Lena. “Shhhh!” Davina said in a hushed tone. Davina continued hesitantly, “Well there’s a problem.. He.. he’s one of the new instructors from Green River. We can’t say anything. I’m afraid if we do, then he could lose his position as an instructor because I’m a trainee. If they replace him then how will I be able to see him? You know Richard won’t let me go anywhere hardly as it is. He definitely won’t let me see Harold even if Harold is my mate. You know how Richard is..” said Davina.
Lena replied, “Hmm.. I see the dilemma, but wow! Davina you have a mate?! This is so cool! You are so lucky!!! I have waited my entire life to find a mate! I have wanted that for as long as I can remember. I kind of wished that we would have found our mates at the same time, but I know how unlikely that is too. This is so exciting! Does he know?”
Davina frowned slightly and said, “Well, I’m not sure. I think he does, but I have no idea if he feels the same way about me.. I have to make a move on him soon but I don’t even know how to. I’m so awkward and not the flirty type at all..” Lena folded her arms across her chest and said, “Oh I’ve got this!! Let me handle this.”
Davina swallowed hard and said, “Oh no, what are you gonna do? What are you planning?” Lena grinned devilishly and replied, “You’ll see! Have a little faith in your bestie would ya?” Now Davina couldn’t be more nervous. She felt like a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. She silently prayed that Lena knew what she was doing. “You want to ride with me again to training this evening?” said Lena. “Sure, sounds like fun.” said Davina.
While the girls were talking, Tim was standing behind the bookshelf and could hear every word they were saying. “So, Davina found a mate?” he thought to himself grinning. He liked Davina ever since she had taken up for him in class when Wilson was being a jerk. His older sister Diana used to do the same thing before she died in the car crash with his parents. He missed his sister terribly. “Davina is bold and fierce just like my big sister used to be.” he thought to himself looking back and recalling the time that his sister rejected Wilson’s advances and embarrassed him. Wilson picked on him heavily after that, and it only got worse after his family died.
His sister was one of the prettiest girls in the school, but she did not like guys like Wilson thankfully. Him and his sister were very close, despite being different socially. Tim was shy and reserved and Diana was a social butterfly whom everyone adored. She was a beautiful spirit and was kind to everyone. Tim had never felt more alone than the day that he got the news that his parents and sibling were gone forever.
Luckily he had an uncle who was willing to take him in and raise him, even if his uncle was very busy most of the time. His uncle was an Alpha and had a lot of matters to attend to, but he was grateful that he had his uncle. Most of the time he hung out with his uncle’s Beta and helped with minor things around the pack house. Most people had homes of their own of course, but it was necessary to have a pack house for extra housing in the case of an emergency and also for when banquets and balls were held. It was a stunning pack house with white marble flooring in the ballroom and a massive chandelier that could light the entire room alone.
His uncle was very intelligent and handled his finances well. He wasn’t a short tempered brute like most alphas seemed to be. Instead, his power lay in his ability to outsmart any potential enemies. He had allies in all the right places. No one dared go against his uncle. Tim had his own room next to his uncle’s Beta and lived a fairly comfortable life, although he would forever miss the company of his parents and his sister. Tim waited until the girls left and then emerged from behind the bookshelf. He liked to hang out in the library in the mornings as that was one of the places Wilson never went.
