Chapter 26
Summer's POV
When I received the call from my son that Rice's mother had passed away, I immediately took a jet to reach his pack. Eric picked me up from the airport, and then my son shared everything that had been happening. Though it is acceptable to prioritize business and family at times because family is family, speaking ill of one's mate and belittling her as nothing but a breeder compelled me to intervene. I was aware that Rice's mother was Creek's true mate, but we were already in a relationship and had agreed to reject each other's true mates. We were deeply in love, and I was already pregnant. Not wanting to cause any trouble, I chose not to inform him about my pregnancy. However, once she discovered the truth, she felt compelled to do the right thing. Consequently, she had him reject her. Even though he was reluctant, upon learning that I was carrying his child, he knew he had to do what was right. She stayed in the pack for a while until she found another chance at happiness. Despite my reservations about him, she chose him and they had a beautiful daughter. I didn't oppose it when my son laid her to rest beside his father; it was the right thing to do. Now, I need to set my son straight. After comforting the girl and telling her to rest, I needed to confront my son alone.
"What the hell were you thinking, telling your mate she's merely a breeder and that she'll always come last? What's wrong with you, son? Your father didn't raise you to treat her like that."
"Mom, wait. You know family extends to other packs too—I visit them to ensure they're alright. Dad always said family comes first, everything else comes last." I was furious with this boy. Family includes his mate; she is now family, she is my daughter now. I must put him in his place before he strays down the wrong path—it's not acceptable at all.
"Let me tell you something, boy, you're acting like a fool. Your father meant everyone, including your mate. Once you've marked and mated her, she becomes family. After the ceremony, she's family. By putting her last, you're making yourself weak. You're behaving like a jerk, just like your mate's abusive mother's mate. He talked down to her, abused her, and I knew all about it because she confided in me. You're headed down the same path. Do you think she'll tolerate it? I doubt it. You have a lot to work on, young man, and you need to start now. Get your butt into that house and beg for her forgiveness."
"But mama, I already have. I asked her for ten days to court her, to demonstrate how much I love her. She said she'd think about it." I couldn't believe this man—old enough to know better, yet behaving like a three-year-old.
"Don’t mama me. Didn't I tell you to get your ass in that pack house and go talk to her? You better hope she gives you another chance." He nodded at me, finally realizing I was right. He ran straight to the pack house, hoping she would forgive him. He better do right by her, or I’ll kick his ass.
“Did you talk with your son about how he treats women?”
“Yes, dear, I did. He's heading there now to chat with her. If he doesn't do right by her, I'm going to kick his ass." My mate laughed as he held me in his arms.
“I hope you don't mind, but I want to stay for just a couple of days just to make sure she is okay.”
“Of course it's okay, she's family. We can stay as long as you want, but we have to go back so we can check up on the pack.”
“Of course, I just want to stay for a few days, that's all.”
Creek's POV:
I always knew my mother was a wild cat, but damn, when she wanted someone to do something, she made it happen. I ran to the pack house hoping she hadn't moved out of the room yet, but once I got in there, she was already gone. I started looking around; she left some of her things here. She didn’t take much at all, but she was still gone. I sat on the bed with my head in my hands, sighing. I wasn’t sure which room she was in, but as I got up, I started towards the door. That's when I saw a letter on the dresser. I lifted it up and started reading.
"I’m in the room across from yours. I have thought about what you asked of me. I have decided to give you ten days. I need to know if I made the right decision. I love you, Creek, but that doesn't give you the right to treat me the way you've been treating me.
With love, Rice."
I held the letter in my hand and kept looking at it. She was right. I had treated her poorly. Tomorrow, I'll start my ten-day courting. I just hope it works because I don't want to lose my mate.
